I'm planning on becoming a graphic/web designer for a living tho i've been told it's more of a side job, is this true?
Bump for interest.
If something can be a side job why couldn't it be a full time job?? Never understood that

not a graphic designer and not trying to be rude, but did you try thinking for more than five seconds or is the concept of a sustainable, reliable income completely foreign to you?
My Dad is a draftsman and I've been able to make a living from drafting (AutoCAD) when the building boom has been happening.
During the non-boom times though, CAD work has been a bit harder to find.
I'd say that graphic design work overall is a struggle because it also follows boom and bust cycles but perhaps to a less obvious extent.
Example: ad work. When business is booming, you'll get smaller companies bidding on ads for smaller businesses.
During shitty times, you'll just have the big boys and the big ads (eg. BMW ads done by a big company in NYC or London).
Sorry if this is rambling, but I'm really drunk right now. That's something you can do if you've already hit the technical drawing jackpot.

Design is a principle, if you can evolve and adapt it's great. I started out as a visualizer. I however studied Visual Communication and got into Advertising (An industry that is dying). Right now I'm an Art Director. Check out Art Director and Creative Director salaries in America, they're fucking high. There is also UX and UI designers which consist of mediocre copy paste talent, starting payscale is 100,000$ a year and involves you drawing boxes.
As for Web Design, services like Wix are trying to kill them off completely. Also Pajeet company Google wants to kill anything and anyone who is creative
Being a freelance Graphic Designer requires you to run your own business. Figure if you can do that.

Can't wait for the bubble to burst. I'm sick of these "experts".

If there is a market for a job then there is a market for a job you retard
Unless you live in a tiny town you should not be limited.
Well, let's put it in this perspective instead..
Are you ready for countless sleepless nights because of deadline issues?
Knowing that there are thousands of Fiverr, freelancer people who would do what you do for 5 bucks?
Consistently having to learn new programs, programming languages and APIs every year until you can retire? (Unless you haven't been fired because a grad-schooler is faster than you now pops).
Get yelled at from either boss or clients on a consistent basis because you either suck at selling your idea or they simply do not understand? Or actively likes to have your designs ripped to pieces.
Ready to work 8 hours consistently a day on design? (Hah, make it like 12–16 hours a day.)
Ready to fight for a job or whore yourself out to clients? Literally, even the shittiest design jobs receives 1000 applications in less than three days.
If you love it, it's worth it. But if you're the type that likes to play around in the programs every now and then; I'm afraid it's a hobby and could be more lucrative as a "side job".

This should be pasted in the sticky. Fuck my life and my bad decisions for taking up this career path.

No, fuck you for not loving what you do.
Faggot.

You've missed the point completely. It's not about loving what you do here. Please pay more attention when reading.
