make shit up, or get a graphic design internship. If you're young you should using school to build your portfolio.

Do you build a real website or just a mockup?
How many pieces or work are enough for a portfolio to be taken seriously?

Mockups. Just a few good pieces is enough, don't make 500 mediocre pieces. Also don't just make sites, a diverse portfolio is important too.

This or go to sites like freelancer/99designs and find some interesting briefs. Don't actually submit anything you make because that would make you a cuck, but it's a good way to get project ideas.
I'm doing a lot of pro-bono work for non profits at the moment. I've spent the last 10 years as CD for a company ... Ramping up my freelance side again ... Feeling like things are getting stale at work these days.

I wanted to do this as well. Is there some kind of job board where NGOs advertise their requests or did you contact them in person?
