How does one change the skin color of a 2D character? I've tried using the Select By Color tool, after which I've used paintbrush to paint a skin color. The end result hasn't been as good as I hoped, which led me into thinking that there's a better way of doing this.
Pic related is not made by me, but works as an example of what I'm trying to accomplish.
Here's the original
Oh, I forgot to mention that I'm using GIMP.

Say that to my face fucker not online and see what happens

Looks like making a perfect selection and then using color changing tools to make the skin darker. I doubt there was any actual 'painting' of color involved.

I think he meant he made selections and used the selection boundaries as coloring-book lines for spamming the paintbrush (which is inefficient, OP, see below).
>>281041
just make a path > path to selection then go colors > colorize. Paths can use splines, if you didn't know, just click and drag the mouse to create curves. It'll put a point down wherever the "click" was and the "drag" adds the path lines. Also IIRC colorize doesn't completely wreck pure whites and stuff, so you should just be able to turn value down and be good. Once I get on my PC and ensure nobody's around (I have a little dignity) I could probably help out. Don't have anything important to do anyways

You seem upset bruh
>Install Photoshop
>Try again
It's not that we don't want to help, but we are totally not gonna translate our methods to your Gimp lingo.
Try getting a copy of photoshop. You will be happier and more satified with your results.

here's an example. the recolored version is a little messy around the eyes because i had accidentally removed the path before making the selection and had to redo it. it's a bit of a pain to do so i just rushed it and used the lasso to finish off the selection. also, colorize does recolor pure white areas so youll have to make extra paths inside of it for stuff like the shiny areas on the OP picture, teeth, and eyes. but pure black areas are all game for messy path points. inb4 shitty blue background

>Gimp, Inkskape, and Blender are free alternatives and have the same function as the paid programs but the paid programs tend to be used more in a professional enviroment.

photoshop is without a doubt better in terms of results and ease of use

>Black with tanlines
Is that possible?
Not to mention that's not even a normal shade of black.
Shit looks like a dark elf.

You do realize most blacks in America are actually some part white, right?
Look up "Negrito" on Wikipedia.

shut the fuck up
give'r some fatass nigga lips, hoop earrings, and nappy weave--becomes legit.
>>281137
Yeahhh, I'm gonna call bullshit on that one, hombre.
What I mean by shade of black, is there's more fucking blue in that shade than red.
Black people don't look like they were covered in motor oil. Well sometimes they do, but most of the time they're more on the brown side than whatever the fuck the OP is.
>You do realize most blacks in America are actually some part white, right?
I don't know what the fuck that has to do with why the hell she looks like a dark elf but ok. I too live in America, in the fucking South no less. I'm well aware of how black people look.

Results are up to the designer. If the designer does a shitty job, then yes, you're going to get worse results. The software is only doing what it's told to do, and if you tell it to do the wrong thing then that's your own fault.
Ease of use doesn't apply because giving a beginner Photoshop and giving another beginner GIMP is going to show the same problem: both have a steep learning curve. People complain GIMP has a bad interface only because they can't handle changes to what they're used to. Like replacing a gaming mouse and having the buttons to do the same things in different places.

Why do I even bother coming to this shitty website?
>>281104
It is. Black people tan the same way white people do: they get darker.
Granted, I don't think that tanning is as emphasized and popular among black people as it is whites (someone correct me if I'm wrong, here), but even the darkest person from the Congo can get darker if they sit out in the sun.

My attempt. Don't really know what I'm doing though. Using gimp
