Word of mouth, references, existing relationships, and one (thus far, going on a year) strategic partnership with another firm. Other firm is gigantic and has several clients on the Nasdaq, but doesn't do what we do. They wanted to buy us out a couple years back but we fended them off, and now they're a pretty solid source of steady work for us ("us" being my two partners and our three employees).

But yeah, if you want work, partner up and offer more than just design. Find somebody who does video, coding, etc. You're not gonna make it as a specialist freelancer anymore, those days are done.
