I'm trying to do halftones by changing mode to bitmap and I'm experimenting with it but it keeps turning out looking really ugly with those Xs everywhere

try duplicating the layer and doing halftone on only the top one, then scroll through the different layer screens

i make 2 layers. top is b/w pic. bottom is all white fill. then add a mask to top and fill using a square pattern. black parts become transparent so bottom white layer shows through while white parts show top layer image.
