If you are serious about editing, learn Premiere or Final Cut. The workflow is pretty much the same as in iMovie, there are tons of plug-ins and resources and is something you can actually put in a resume.
Learning AfterEffects for the titles and everything that's not strictly linear video editing won't hurt either.

Don't use several different fonts
Don't use that many text transitions, most of them look cheap and from a sweet16 video, regular dissolves will get the job done in a classy way.

I don't really want to suds rube to Adobe, and I can't just straight up buy the siftware anymore. I do have after effects cs6 though, so I'll google tutorials on that. Thank you!!!

Thank you kindly! Oh, and are there any after effects wizards? I watched a tutorial on how to change the frame rate of a imported file. I was trying to give a clip a more cinematic look and adjusted it to 29.98, but now when I RAM preview, the video runs slow and the audio runs ahead of it. So vid footage lags while audio is fine. I rendered it,thinking it might just be in after effects that it's doing that, and same thing happened happened to the final product saved to the desktop. How does one fix that?

Changing the frame rate like that will only deteriorate video quality.
I think what you want to do is to interpolate your footage to 60fps.
You will need Twixtor or other plug-in to do it semi-properlly.
Don't do it though. It will look bad and cheap.

If you don't actually transcode the video and just change the composition's fps, the video playback will change but the audio will stay the same.
Don't do unecesary convertions, it will just decrease video quality.

this "cinematic look" with 24fps (NOT 23.98) is just bullcrap. If you want a cinematic look then shoot the film with old school "cinematic" cameras. End of story.
