I do this art style (layered shadows) ALL DAY at my work, it's the brand style, and I can tell you without a reference it's borderline impossible, certainly not a case of the right shapes first time.

Needed women striking different poses in different outfits so I just grabbed one of my ex's fashion magazines and it worked.
