How did you add that grungy effect?

It's a combination of two effects. I downloaded a black and white grunge texture and ramped up the contrast until it was just those black flecks. Then, using a luma matte, I set it so it only appeared on the white portions of the image. For the red section I did the same thing except inverted the color, so the flecks are white.

The second effect was just downloading a grunge paper texture, making it the top layer, and setting it to multiply, then lowering the opacity and saturation until it was more subtle.

Looks a little cluttered with the chamber and the safety on the top, and I don't think the mortarboard needs to be on the T. Other than that the only other things I would change are minor adjustment to the placement of things like keeping the ampersand separate from the C.

I do like the idea of the trigger in the C.

Good concept though the colours on the bottom should be more consistent. I don't think the type should be one to a colour because reserv-oir reads weird, It makes me think mr. pink and white are less important cus the have less letters, and I start to read down the colour like RO D, EI O, SR G.

Ha, I can see that. The idea with the bottom colors is who killed who, and in order, but I can see that it reads a little funky. I agree with the way the letters reads, but that might be a limitation of the design, as spreading letters across the colors might make them difficult to make out. Definitely a good point though.

Yeah, I totally rushed it in order to get it done in 15 mins. I duplicated the pattern and put no effort into the colour choices. Given more time, I'd probably create a psychedelic pattern from scratch and not just use warp filters.

rate how bad I am, first year student who's shit with fonts, background photo is taken by me a couple days ago on a camping trip. I felt the image of a hand shoveling and raising a fire fitted the theme of the book.

Well, first of all, how come it's in landscape when it's a book.

Second, it looks kinda like it's an ad from the '70s. Poor exposure and focus, too dark.

Third, the title. It's in the corner, which again makes it look like an ad. And the font doesn't really associate with totalitarian regimes.

Because in the book those who don't follow the regime are left to a life of living near train rails and travel the land. One of the scenes that I remember most vividly is the main character's internal dialogue when watching a fire and seeing someone poke it. I figured it might be good for that.

Secondly, you're right, it shouldn't be in landscape, I was being sloppy. Opened the photo, placed the text, saved it and uploaded it here. Should've taken the whole 15 minutes.

Third, you're right as well. Any fonts you could advise?

If you hadn't said it was for Pacific Rim I wouldn't have seen what was going on in that picture. I get that you were going for that simplistic look but you went a little too far, do what you did with the Jagers hand to the rest of the Jager. and add more detail to the Kaiju. Next, why is everything in the top half of the image? What's going on in the bottom half? Why is the Jager just cut off? Why is that tin white line around the bottom and left side of the Jager? It looks like you stopped 1/3rd of the way through making it and just stopped.
