You are trying to do illustration without illustration skills

If you can't draw you need to learn to do so, even for simple sketching before using any software. Graphic designers typically mix these skills and transport drawing techniques to vector illustrations for example. You just can't get to that level without spending hours sketching.

I think these work.

It's all very minimalist but these don't have the amateur feel of the other few.

Overall I say good work, keep at it.
