Went with a 90's alt rock feel. Thoughts?

I see many people utterly failing this exercise and postng disgusting covers because they fundamentaly misunderstand what this is about:

The type is not at all what you should worry about. Almost all of the best examples use a simple oldstyle serif or a geometric sans. Using more than one typeface, or applying effects to it, will basically always be a failure.

Composition also doesn't matter. While it can pay off to be original, having the type centered in the middle always look good and requires little effort.

The real problem of this exercise is the iconography. You success in the cover will depend almost entirely on the image you choose and how you crop it. This is not about what is depicted (though it often help set a mood), but about the visual composition.


Compare two examples:

uses an image of a building exploding, which sounds cool in theory, but the composition is terrible and the type is thrown awkwardly in it.


The random album cover exercise is deceptively simple, because it totally relies on the visual composition of pictures, but the pictures given to you are not numerous and most of them suck.
It;'s really not at all about learning how to create "cool type" (the error made by many people), but about developing an eye for visual composition, to find the diamond in the pile of flickr shit. Of course developing this eye is way harder than slapping a bunch of colored filters on a pictures of a monkey.

good picture, you should try and manipulate it and just play around with it. you can get some cool effects with that reflection. The text is just bland and seems like it's yelling at me. I think it's you try and use two different variables instead of a difference in color, i.e. weight, size, and pay attention to contrast I think you will get better results. I'm not a big fan of the font, but you can make it work using those variables.

color scheme doesn't really go together.
pure black is hard to integrate into a mostly light and colorful piece. The corny graphics don't really work. The drop shadows don't look very pleasing, especially with that purple. I would try and go with a central color scheme. You can find sites online that give you color combinations.
