Discord is bad because it's centralized and it has no encryption support. check out Matrix.

What about Riot? It's like Discord, but it's very decentralized in comparison and has end-to-end encryption, as well as mobile apps.

https://riot.im/
>>
>>62469892
Why is it popular when it's a shit?
>>
>>62470002
is there any evidence that it tracks computer and internet activity outside of the discord app in any way?
>>
>>62470160
No, but as long as it's proprietary you have no proof that it doesn't.

It fucking works. It has enough features to work well. It's lightweight. It's not run by a single person, anyone can host an IRC server. No, a real physical server, not the Discord misnomer that's akin to making a new channel. Which is just confusing noobs on what a real server is. You can make scripts in your client to become efficient. I can leave important tidbits to people via memoserv. IRC is trustworthy, written by people who wrote programs for good reasons with good methods. It was written before anti-privacy and globalism infected software. The list goes on and on.

IRC is old, but to the shame of current climate of software development, is not obsolete.

Automatic gain control, basically shit tier mics (so most people), it will pick up everything bit of noise or buzzing and transmit it as most fags don't use push to talk.

It's basically just a matrix client for normies, which is a good thing because it means I can get my friends to use matrix while I can still use my pro hacker inefficient TUI clients.
Also Matrix is great. Basically the logical upgrade from IRC.

>the dont let me have full control over my fucking server

mumble is the only worthwhile voip program that I know of right now. Teamspeak is close but iirc they have limitations on what you can do without a license.
>>
Our company is moving from Hipchat to Slack and one of the first integrations is setting up the IRC gateway.

Can't wait.

Personally only use Discord for text chat, use Mumble for voice.

Tox is shilled by Lainshitters, which tells you its garbage right away (Lainshitters also love Discord and CIAfox). Also the fact that there is ALWAYS drama associated with Tor should be a red flag. Basically there was a lot of baby rage about SJW infiltration into the cryptography used, while others thought it was a mistake to use weaker cryptography just to avoid a potentially compromised better one. Apparently all the good devs left too. So you have to ask yourself, do I trust a piece of software when the people who made it don't even trust it?
>>
>>62475273
The weechat matrix plugin is pretty good. Plus it's open source unlike Discord so you can make your own if you are so inclined.
>>
Lots of Riot users here, good to see some lads are starting to hop over.

Check out Banter City, it's a /g/-run server that should be right up your alley.

Our general discussion room is available at:

If you're using a client, be sure to set your home server URL to https://banter.city after ticking "Custom Server URL" on the registration/login page.

is Riot.im fully finished or does it still need some polish? Its not made in electron, right?
>>
>>62478504
>Plus it's open source unlike Discord so you can make your own if you are so inclined.
But there are no good clients yet. The one best suited to my preferences is Quaternion, but it's not fully featured, doesn't support uploading images yet for example. IRCv3 seems interesting though, since it's based on good old IRC. http://ircv3.net/
>>62478713
>Its not made in electron, right?
The desktop version likely uses something like that since it's primarily a freaking web client.

Riot is only the user-facing part though. Any client that understands the Matrix protocol can be used. I'm a fan of the WeeChat plug-in. I wish Discord had a competent 3rd party client that isn't ass, but until that happens a bridge to matrix is pretty OK.

We're all well-fucking-aware that it's only a protocol, but the problem here is that there aren't any good fully-featured clients for it.
