What I wish more than anything is for programming to come as freely as writing does and for it to be my autistic habit instead. Do seasoned programs ever feel like their "output" comes freely, and is it an autistic, therapeutic obsession for them?

I always feel like in c++ there has to be so much extra code besides the actual instructions of what the program does, which is the part I like. Such as, set and get methods! They annoy me, and is that just how the computer stores things in memory? Do other programming languages have them or only java and c++?

Also, is it ok to just passively read about programming sometimes? Or is the only meaningful way to spend time actively solving problems and working examples?
>>
im trying to buy a flip phone off offer up, and most flip phones are carrier locked aka carrier os. How do i remove the carrier os is there any software
>>
>>62468529
>Do seasoned programs ever feel like their "output" comes freely,
Yeah but more often than not you are going to be working with something you haven't before, a new library or api, and that is always going to slow you down.
>>
Do Windows users at CS/SE-related jobs face prejudice? In your experience. Just curious.
>>
>>62468531
Carrier locked ≠ carrier OS

You want an unlocked phone, compatible with the carrier you're going to use. GSM phones are generally pretty cross-compatible, although a lot of CDMA phones only work for one network. Phones will generally work on MVNOs that use the same towers without being unlocked.

Encrypting USBs for cold storage wallets to store my ALTCOINS like ARK, BAT and NAV.
If I do this correctly essentially key loggers and RATs won't be able to cause trouble for my funds or hack into any of my wallets because the encryption would block the keylogger from getting my correct phrases and a RAT wouldn't be able to touch any funds once the USB is removed anyways as long as my USB the badguys have no access to funds because installed and I made sure only the USB has the wallets? I think sha-1 is a hash you check alongside the "untouched" Windows 7 ISO. If they match, it's genuinely an untouched W7 ISO. If it's different, it may or may not be a virus, but it's not the bare naked iso is what that means.

basically if the "sha-1" matches the confirmed original you're comparing to then it's a 1:1 copy of what M$ released, so you'll have no worries.

I lost nothing compared to some but it was all I had and I worked for it. I bought a new version of windows10 but what anti virus setup should I use with my win10 computer? You can check the test results to see how the different AVs do. It varies over time. I haven't used AVG in like 10 years, but I hear it's pretty behind. Bitdefender has had really good scores the last few years, no ads, and it's light as hell, but the free version doesn't give you a lot of options. It pairs well with malwarebytes.

if I've upgraded from legit 7 to 10 via the free upgrade, and then change the hard drive for another and install the same version of windows via iso/usb onto that drive, will windows detect that I (essentially) have the same computer using their fancy digital license system, and confirm my copy as legit?
>>
>>62470471
>https://www.polyphasicsociety.com/polyphasic-sleep/overviews/everyman/
That looks cool. I have a problem where i always get tired in the afternoon then wake up around 8pm. Ive slept through my classes twice now, and we are only allowed to miss two days, so it sucks because now I am stressed it will happen again.

So yeah. It sucks because as soon as the morning light hits my eyes I feel deathly groggy but cant fall asleep till around noon at the earliest, so I have a block of time where I am useless and groggy. Ideally I would sleep twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon but I cant seem to fall asleep in the mornings when I want to.
>>
>>62470545
It will register the same signature, yes. Switching out a drive does not impact your license.

Yeah, instead of fighting it, listen to your body and work around it. I have a similar problem too so going to try out polyphasic sleep. My only hurdle will be vastly reducing my core from the typical 9hrs to 3.5hrs so should be fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVJE3mUV-wQ
>>
>>62470620
Shouldn't matter. It's just based on the hardware, yeah.
>>

It's completely unnecessary for just switching out a drive. The mobo is where you would run into problems.

Yeah, that works most of the time. But he was just asking about switching out drives, and for that there's no need to even think about the phone system.

So I think my motherboard is dieing. I thought it was the GPU but it's having problems with the replacement with no signal output. About 1 and half years ago I bought a high quality Chinese engineered PCI to PCI-E bridge that overloaded and fried the PCI-E slots on the board. One survived which was the one with the GPU but it appears to finally have reached its demise.

I used a RAID 1 with this board which contains files I need. Everything critical is backed up but I'd like to get some of the this stuff if I can. Can drives that have been in a RAID 1 on one RAID controller (Intel in this case) be read by another or rather can one single drive be read like a normal single drive? So if I take one of these drives, stick it into another machine will it be able to read it or not like any other standalone drive?

Some of the concepts will transfer, like basic control flow and logic, since javascript's syntax is largely based on C.

If you've never used a compiled language before, you'll have to learn a lot regarding types, compiling, memory management, etc.

I have had this 2TB internal Seagate HDD for ~5 years. It's for storage only, the OS is on another drive. Last night while qbittorent was writing something on it, the HDD started to make a repetitive, jarring sound. I was on my headphones so the sound could've been going on for a few minutes already.

Soon after when trying to access files on the drive, programs started lagging unable to read it. Qbittorrent also gave an error message. Then W10 froze completely and I had to do a hard reset.

Now after rebooting Windows' File Explorer can't see the drive. There's no letter assigned to it. Device Manager, Disk Management and Speccy see the hardware but the capacity is wrong. Speccy for example lists the size as 127GB (pic related).. this seems weird?

There's some stuff on the HDD I'd love to recover so I unplugged and set it aside for now.

What should be my next step?

Well, it depends how it's implemented, but it makes quiet shit louder and loud shit quieter so it's an even experience. It can be useful if you're watching a movie with way too loud explosions and quiet voices for example, but realize that you'd be changing what the movie is and that somebody thought those loud explosions were a good idea.
I generally keep it off unless I don't care about what I'm watching.

>>
>>62475231
I think CPU first, and yeah you'd need a new mobo with that, and probably new RAM because DDR4. Personally I'd probably choose AMD's Ryzen at this point over Intel.
Though the GPU is probably a bit old as well, so to match the new CPU you'd be better of upgrading that as well. So basically a completely new PC aside from the case, hard drives, and PSU.

Ofc I reviewed the source code and all connections are closed once the queries are made.
Problem is that I can't access it via the phpmyadmin interface neither so can't see what are those active connexions.

It's a small website for an association so there isn't much traffic (~80 per day) and active connections are supposed to be closed after a few minutes of inactivity anyway (or maybe ovh default config are retarded?). It's been a day like this and it's a little bit annoying

[blog]Well, the reason I'm asking is because I think I'm having issues with my first PC build. I installed all the parts properly (CPU, RAM, GPU), and ensured that each part that needed to be connected to the PSU was connected(power sw, reset sw, etc). Yet, whenever I power the PC on, nothing displays.

I've tried connecting to the TV by HDMI and VGA cabling, but I still don't get a display. I've also noticed that the PC doesn't power off unless I turn off the power supply directly, no matter how long I hold the case's power button this still occurs.

I've also noticed that the PC appears to shut of, if only for an instant, then appears to constantly turn on/turn off. I don't know if this is because I used the stock heat sink that came with my CPU, which I did not apply thermal paste to since it claimed it was already applied.

I'll just redo everything and see how it goes.[/blog]

Bear with me on this... I'm just wondering if there's any Linux equivalent to Comodo Firewall, as in an application for GNU/Linux systems that provides popup menus for network AND filesystem activity.

For example, with Comodo, if an application tries to modify the registry, you can block that, and most will still run properly. Same with blocking applications that request internet connections but most likely don't need them.

Well aware of iptables but looking for something that provides prompts, thanks.

>Also, is it ok to just passively read about programming sometimes? Or is the only meaningful way to spend time actively solving problems and working examples?

CS grad here, gonna answer some question even though you've long since left the thread.
>programming to come as freely as writing?
yes, but it's different. programming involves not only typing, but also reading, and very often taking out a notebook and scribbling down notes and doing calculus/algebra or whatever.

When you're writing code without having looked something up in the last 5 minutes, you're doing it wrong. because 99% of the time, as a novice programmer, you'll be trying to reinvent every possible wheel. don't do that.
>I always feel like in c++ there has to be so much extra code besides the actual instructions
don't use c++, except maybe to learn how memory and pointers work (although it's mostly irrelevant nowadays besides knowing the difference between a value and a reference)

I personally suggest javascript. you can do all the basic shit, on top of having a lot of easy functional functionality. plus, you don't even need to install a compiler!

try to program completely without loops, and you'll write significantly more readable and compact code.

>Also, is it ok to just passively read about programming sometimes?
sure, but I don't do it often without context.

I need to write a JS function that pulls data from an existing API (typical http GET call). The API returns the data in JSON format. I am using getJSON followed by JSON.stringify to set a global variable (which I know I probably shouldn't do). My issue is that because getJSON is async. the global variable isn't getting set.

pic related, jsonstr is my global variable, it is still empty after the function call. I have confirmed that the data is being retrieved correctly.

Try returning the value, then outside the function assign the value to the variable.
Something like this
 function getJSONStr(URL){
return $.get......................
}
var jsonstr = getJSONStr("google")

This way you make sure jsonstr gets a value

ffmpeg -i INPUT.mkv -vcodec libvpx -b:v BITRATE -ss STARTTIME -to ENDTIME OUTPUT.webm

Add -an if you want to upload to remove sound to upload to 4chan. Shit with capital letters should be changed. You can also add a shitload of other options.

Sounds like it works without drivers, so don't install drivers?

you don't really need antivirus these days
just use a good adblocker and you should be fine

uh when I do this the sound works but the video turns into a black screen. do you have to have the startime/endtime?

yeah, but it only gives video, and wont run games
>>
>>62481394
nope, that doesn't work either
also when I try to upload the one with the broken video I get this:
"Error: Bad audio stream. Only Vorbis is supported."
>>
>>62472920
It depends on the GPU (does it have 4K hardware decoding or not), the codec used (does your GPU has hardware decoding for that particular codec) and software support in your player/OS.
>>
>>62481468
Well I don't know how to fix the video then, maybe try adding
-quality best -qmin 0
, but that shouldn't fix it I think.

>"Error: Bad audio stream. Only Vorbis is supported."
This can be fixed by encoding the audio to vorbis. Basically the same, just use -acodec and -b:a in addition. Google what you should specifically use for -acodec, I don't know of the top of my head.

I just got my first job as a developer.
For some reason, I am thrown into a project that is way beyond what I have ever done and I am the only one who is going to be working on it.
I am asked to make a detailed plan for the tasks I need to complete in the next year.

Does anyone know good software to do this?
I can make a plan in taiga or something, but I would like something offline (as I am probably the only one who is going to use it)
It would be cool if it can make nice graphs and stuff so I can keep my bosses happy.

Two questions

1) Are the manufacturer's chipset drivers necessary anymore? I have an old Acer computer running a Phenom X4 9550 but there are no drivers available. It seems to work fine, I haven't stress tested it yet but for example wifi worked without installing anything. It also fetched the driver for the GPU too. The windows 10 chipset driver seems to function okay.

2) On my other old computer, running an Asus P5K (LGA775), C2Q 8300 and 8GB RAM there's a problem when transferring files between W10 computers in my home network. If I load the network, the network adapter will crash, troubleshooter says the defualt gateway isn't available. I know it's not caused by my router cause it doesn't happen on my other LGA775-based HP, running a very similar setup. It could be that I don't have proper LAN drivers for the computer, but neither does the HP. I know it's not the network adapter, because I bought a USB Ethernet adapter and the same problem happened with that even with all the drivers installed. If I tried to transfer files wirelessly, using an old 802.11b adapter (USB), it would transfer all files slow, but it would not cut the connection. What gives? I try to google the problem but all I get is the average pajeets with their empty blanket answers.

Could this problem be caused by Windows? Usually I run LTSB but this computer has W10 Professional.

I've seen three different types of answer to this question on the internets:

RAM has two things you care about: Latency(how long it takes for RAM to react when CPU wants something) and bandwidth(how quickly the RAM can move things when it receives the request from CPU). This has small effect on any programs/operations that don't fit entirely in the CPU cache: unless you're running a program that's particularly sensitive to RAM, the difference between good and bad RAM is generally in the 1-5% range*.

Good RAM has as high bandwidth as you can afford(reasonably priced DDR4 tops at around 3200MHz range at the moment) and CAS of about 1/200MHz(this because the latency is actually measured in clock cycles. It works out to about 10ns in real terms since DDR frequency is doubled in marketing speak) and works with your motherboard(this can be an issue especially with Ryzen, since it can be relatively picky about RAM, though BIOS updates keep making it better).

*does not apply with Ryzen or any of the zen-based platforms: because infinity fabric is tied to RAM speed, RAM with higher bandwidth can make a big difference - but that's more about infinity fabric design than RAM itself

EE or CE.
CE is better for games.
EE is better for electronics.

I took CE, we had 2 courses on electronics where you learn about the theory 3 courses on FPGA where you combine electronics and programming and then a couple of courses on embedded programming.
It won't be the same for you, but this is the amount of electronics you get with CE.
If you need more than that, go EE.

Homework question here:

I have to write a python program that given a large 50 MB DNA sequence and a smaller one, of around 15 characters, returns a list of all sequences of 15 characters ordered by how close they are to the one given as well as where they are in the larger one.

My current approach is to first get all the subsequences:
def get_subsequences_of_size(size, data):
sequences = {}
i = 0
while(i+size <= len(data)):
sequence = data[i:i+size]
if sequence not in sequences:
sequences[sequence] = data.count(sequence)
i += 1
return sequences

and then pack them in a list of dictionaries according to what the problem asked (I forgot to get the position):
def find_similar_sequences(seq, data):
similar_sequences = {}
sequences = get_subsequences_of_size(len(seq), data)
for sequence in sequences.keys():
diffs, muts = calculate_similarity(seq,sequence)
if diffs not in similar_sequences:
similar_sequences[diffs] = [{"Sequence": sequence, "Mutations": muts}]
else:
similar_sequences[diffs].append({"Sequence": sequence, "Mutations": muts})
#similar_sequences[sequence] = {"Similarity": (len(sequence)-diffs), "Differences": diffs, "Mutatations": muts}
return similar_sequences

The problem is that this code is VERY SLOW. What kind of approach should I take to speed it up?

I went to turn on my ps4 today and was met with Error Code CE-34335-8, "cannot access system storage". Won't even boot into safe mode or anything. So I open it up to take a look at the hard drive, and the platter is looking pretty scuffed (I assume it's not supposed to look like this) and there's some sort of mark on the inner circle that I've never seen before. The hard drive is a HGST 7K1000 that spins at 7200rpm, faster than the default hard drive's 5400. Does anyone know what could've happened here, and whether it was the fault of the console or the hard drive itself? I don't want to end up buying a new hdd only for this same thing to happen again a few months down the line. The console never got moved around when it was turned on, and the hdd hasn't been touched since I installed it almost a year ago.
