Discord is the closest extant software that approximates the feature set of halcyon era WLM desu. I made a fuckload of emoticons for MSN back in the 2003 days for mess.be. If you used it, you likely used my emoticons at some point.

One thing I loved doing was using Messenger Discovery to mimic people (virtually clones every facet about a user)
Doing that in multi-user conversations was fucking hilarious. The amount of arguments that could cause with one tactical shitpost mid-conversation.
Also combining that with Messenger Plus to make chat bots and pseudo-games.

Also, another one I forgot to mention was Advanced Display Picture.
Because MSN was a piece of shit, it never actually checked the dimensions of the image data it received from users display pictures, it only applied a max resolution as it was set in the display picture settings.
So you get a program between MSN and the network, you can send images of ANY resolution (as long as it is under the filesize)
Same with emoticons.
ADP also had one feature where people could send messages to your display picture.
I had a chat system I created. I ended up having 2 people cybering through it. Both of said guys still don't know 14 years later. Every time I remember, it makes me laugh.

No IM system comes close to the fun I had on MSN.
Not IRC, not Skype, not Mumble, nothing. All fucking shit-tier in comparison.
I'd give anything for a good, extendable chat system.
Matrix looks interesting, but it is also done by high-tier autists of the Bad Kind, not the useful kind, so RIP for that.

I resonate with this post so much. At one stage I had customised every single letter as an emoticon but there was a limit to how many you could use in one sentence, so all my messages were split up into several line breaks.

There was also a screen share feature in MSN which I used to fuck around with a lot.

With mumble you can host your own servers.
Its voip and has a text chat.
In my experience though, it can be real finicky, you have to manually adjust the mic volume otherwise its horrible, and mobile users HAVE to have a headset to prevent endless feedback loop. Theres even a broken picture support in the chat!

They fucked over my survival. I spent months leveling a hill/mountain/forest biom to be flat ocean front property. I had a shit ton of every resource categorized away. I logged off one night and get on the next to to have an update. after the update I can load the map but when I travel more than 200 blocks away from where I spawn the game crashes. Its been several updates and I still cant load my map.
Ive tried going away form spawn in every direction. In single player and multiplayer with someone else. Ive copied my map to creative and tried to fly away, only 1 time was I able to loop around to where I was doing work and see it but then the game crashed and i was never able to get back to that part of the map. Most of the time I cant even fly away from where I spawn before It crashes out.
I have other friends that their save fucks up, gets corrupted, and one that their save wont actually save. the can boot up, make changes, but when they save and reload its like the changes never happened.

I spent 12 hours a day every day for months on that map only to have it all erased. Thats why i dont play games anymore. I waste all that time of my life and I have literally nothing to show for it.
This shit happens every time I try to play a game anymore.

MSN as a technology wasn't really the beauty of it. What really made software like that worked was the fact that when someone was online on MSN, you just knew that they were at home by their computer and had time to talk if you wanted to. You could easily have long conversations because your could both type on keyboards fairly quickly and so on.

Thanks to smartphones, you're technically speaking always online unless your phone is dead so you have no real way of knowing whether or not a person has time to talk with you or not.
