Microsoft recently gave a big 'donation' to Canonical in an effort to help them out of their increasing financial trouble.
>>
>>62461106
Microsoft gives donations to a lot of free software projects. It just means that their priorities overlap with that of their sponsors, not that their sponsors necessarily sway the direction of Canonical. As for openSuse, well, that's a different story.
>>
>>62461197
I'm well aware, Microsoft is one of the biggest contributors to the Linux kernel, and OpenSUSE has continued to be a profitable company since the 90's, but Canonical hasn't made a penny since it started over a decade ago.

Yeah, mplayer is good and still maintained

mplayer2 was a vile fork made under really bad conditions. And it was shit. They spread fud against mplayer. But the based mplayer dev kicked their butts by superior programming and now vile mplayer2 is no more and the distros that fell for the mplayer2 meme are back to based mplayer.

mplayer2 is the neovim of media players. A vile fork made and supported by fud against the original based hard working developer. Fuck mplayer2 and neovim.

>>
>>62467543
>I genuinely don't know why people care this much, considering that things rarely get enforced.
Yeah, an obvious example of that would be the KISS/MPlayer dispute, in which KISS blatantly stole MPlayer technology and then nothing came out of it. I disagree with your defeatist at the prospect--there's more to the GPL than just the enforcement of it against people who transgress it--but we do live in a depressing time.
>>
>>62467594
Isn't neovim doing actually different things like moving the fuck away from vimscript and making it embeddable?

well im using i3, and got no other wm, only a lock manager or whatever it's called. How can i swithc from i3 to i3-gaps?
>>
>>62467744
Bullshit. Neovim is using buzz words, like "community", "democracy", the evil bdfl" but the truth is the declined neovim patches weren't good to begin with, Bram was very polite and logical in declining said patches (despite the fud neovim shills spread) and now Vim is more feature full, with better features. As for the "embeddable" it's a big meme. Vim is a simple text editor, making it embeddable is all a scam to stop putting features in Vim and instead adding features in whatever the fuck neovim was going to be embedding in. Thankfully based Bram thanks to superior programming btfo their plans and neovim is being contained in an annoying circlejerk of broken promises and cries for donations to hire full-time-devs (which didn't happen).
>>
>>62467815
They are conflicting because they provide teh same thing, one with patches(gaps)

It would be absurd to use Kali as a desktop, because Kali doesn't provide anything that regular Debian doesn't provide, but it does have its disadvantages as a desktop.

Look at this shit. This is how terminal text rendering should be done. If your fallbacks are too big or characters overlap, just fucking let them overlap instead of adding huge line spacing and missing glyph boxes like in urxvt

It's a different font. Terminus doesn't have Japanese characters, so it falls back to another font which does. You could try to set one with embedded bitamps for Japanese but at 8pt font size they're going to be unreadable so it's kind of necessary like this.
But that's beside the point anyway. The point is this terminal lets glyphs overlap rather than fucking up the whole font rendering to "fix" it just because it's possible in some rare cases that a couple glyphs might overlap
>>

That's what you'd think. But as a new linux user, becoming familiar with all these settings, commands, errors and solutions was something entirely different for me.

The research that comes involved with it. Finding out what you actually want and how to set it up the way you want while also having to look up any errors that one might come across. Not so familiar with git either, and figuring out if I really need the programs they advise or if I can use another version of my own. Then how to set up those programs to perform the same thing the guy is doing, but mine.

You see how it all accumulates?
... Well needless to say you're wrong. But perhaps you just misunderstood my level of familiarity on Linux. Maybe if I knew better I could've done it much faster, right.

Well, part of the reason people switch to Debian testing/unstable is because 1. a rolling release model, 2. the testing packages are significantly more recent than that of stable. So, yes, superficially ~amd64 is similar to Debian testing, but you achieve none of the benefits. In fact, if you consider how the Gentoo dev team is towards new releases, there is very little distinction between ~amd64 and amd64, relative to Debian, and a lot of detriment to using unstable packages.

To add to my point, there's not a lot of software that you *pay attention to* in Gentoo, but there are still a lot of packages that are going to be affected when switching to unstable that you not only don't pay attention to, but seriously don't want to pay attention to, because dealing with them means you're in some serious shit. This is why Arch is a shitty distribution. Because most sane people use devs use stable, and then clone the packages they *do* want to be bleeding edge from Github. You're definitely better off with the latter, except with the unstable repos rather than Github. There are no practical benefits to using bleeding edge in most respects, but there are a lot of issues that come with that decision.

I don't blame you though. I have lots of free time, unfortunately. That's not a good thing.

Slackware is old school Linux, therefore is used by a loyal base from the early daysm mostly.
If you wan to try something and you have the time, try Source Mage and experiment, here is an installation guide https://pastebin.com/qqaUJMDC
and here some command https://pastebin.com/tA09k8Rq
>>
>>62470220
USE flags are more than just a convenience. I mean, if I knew exactly how I wanted to configure things before compiling than maybe not so much. But a big part of it too is I think they even have some options available that aren't readily configurable, but some package maintainer went out of their way to make it so. I could be wrong about that though, but that's the impression I always got.

But still I don't see much of a difference anyway. Best case scenario my slackware machine would end up about identical to my gentoo one, but more realistically I'd actually probably have more bloat on slackware because I wouldn't take advantage of every possible configuration optimization which is more easily done on gentoo
>>
>>62470329

Testing out fs level encryption on a 4gb usb drive.

Some dude in the last thread said that fsencrypt may not be enabled in the Ubuntu kernel but how would I check if it is?

And has anyone got this working on Ubuntu? Or even a different distro?

Example.
"xdotool click 3"
Mod4 + Alt + i

this binds a mouse right-click to super+alt+i

Anyone using neovim? What plugins do you use if any?
Are all vim plugins compatible?

I just want to have a simple setup with the project tree (I think nerdtree does this?), nice tabbing (maybe just need to learn buffers), some kind of way to debug/lint if relevant to language.

What's a good terminal utility to monitor network stuff? Something like htop would be cool.
Should show something like:
>what applications does which connections

What's /g/'s opinion of Fedora I was thinking about setting up a dual boot of it to see if it would be viable for everyday use for me

I don't use Windows because it's expensive.

Is the following post the only way to programmatically create a session in i3? I took it from a post on an earlier thread

>you want a mini tutorial?

>Launch your programs and put them in position then execute the next command:
i3-save-tree --workspace 1 > ~/.i3/workspace-1.json

edit that json file and replace the class name and/or instance with the program name use xprop if you dont know the names
"swallows": [
{
"class": "^Emacs$",
"instance": "^emacs$"
// "title": "^emacs\\@beemo$",
// "transient_for": "^$"
}

in your i3 config file (put the proper names)
# Load layouts
exec --no-startup-id "i3-msg 'workspace 1; append_layout ~/.config/i3/workspace-1.json'"

then lauch the programs:
exec --no-startup-id "i3-msg 'workspace 1; exec urxvt -name ncmpcpp -e ncmpcpp'"
exec --no-startup-id "i3-msg 'workspace 1; exec urxvt -name vis -e vis'"
exec --no-startup-id "i3-msg 'workspace 1; exec uxterm -name clock -e tty-clock -c -s -C 3'"

programs that arent made by faggots like pottering give you the chance yo rename their name as seen in the example above

For your processes:
watch -tn1 lsof -i

For all processes:
watch -tn1 sudo lsof -i

Dual booting is for pussies.

Debian
>>
>>62473783
Well dual booting is what's happening until I decide if I can use it full time or not. I wanted an opinion on Fedora not on dual booting.

Now that I think of it, only thing annoying me with Xubuntu is the screen tearing. Never got completely rid of it.
I was told this is Xfce's fault, so what should I try instead? Ubuntu with unity? Debian gnome?
>>
>>62473820
the problem with dual boot is that you learn slow since its easy to pussy out and switch back instead of fixing stuff

why not try several distros in a vm first to see if you like it, nobody can tell you the best distro for (you)

fedora is okish as beginner distro, also look into ubuntu or debian
>>
>>62473820
Dual booting leads to not using it full time.

I think I get xdotool to work (note: I want to make a key press alt+shift+r) with
xdotool key "alt+shift+r"

but I'm not sure it does work.

When I add
"xdotool key "alt+shift+r""
q

to my .xbindkeysrc, xbindkeys doesn't seem to save my settings most of the time. Nothing happens when I press "q", but
"xbindkeys_show"
m:0x5 + c:24
Control+Shift + q

seems to work even if I comment it all out. And then, sometimes, it doesn't.

Been using Debian without gui in a virtual machine for awhile now so I could get used to the command line there's just some stuff I need to try outside of the VM to see if I can fully convert to it. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't something about Fedora everyone hated.
>>
>>62473900
Also, your example didn't work for me. When I press super+alt+i, nothing happens, but when I input "xdotool click 3" into the console, a rightclick happens.

You mean like systemd?
>>
>>62473934
"xdotool click 3"
m:0x5 + c:24
Control+Shift + q

seems to work.

Maybe you just can't make xdotool press [Alt] + [Shift] + [r]?

I am setting Mutt mail client and I've tried to autologin by several waysbut passwords have strange characters and are fucking difficult to feed to Mutt. How can I pass the passwords to Mutt? I need to track down how to make imap_pass being shoved the password to ultimately have a way to grab it from another file, but can't do it if the passwords won't be even recognized on the config file itself because of weird characters.

Shouldn't that be like a basic feature of source based distros?
