I'm on a tight budget so I can only pick one of these for a new PC.

>a 60hz monitor and a SSD

or

>a 120hz monitor and a HDD 7200RPM

Which is better overall?
>>
According to msdn, you can make a "Portable Class library" that targets the ".NET Standard 2.0" and use "Xamarin" to build applications for both android and windows 8.1, with a single codebase.

I already know C# and Java, but the single codebase looks like a good solution for lazy fucks like me.

Should i bother or will i regret it?

Anyone here doing multiplatform C# development?

Post build so we can optimize it for lower price.
>>

is a SSD really a better upgrade over a 120hz screen?
>>
>>62458984
i have a 144hz monitor and an SSD
the monitor is only eye candy,
you'll appreciate the SSD more, since the benefits of the increased speed are undeniable when it comes to loading (or even compiling) programs
>>
>>62458984
It's a thing of preference to a degree.
The monitor will make moving windows around smoother, and make games smoother IF you can run them at 120+hz. How much depends on your eyes, I can't really see the smoothness. A lot of people even think 30fps (consoles) is buttery smooth.

The SSD will make everything faster, including loading games. A very noticeable difference.

This website, sankakucomplex, their navigation bar or however it's called at the bottom has a "last" or "first" button about 3 or 4 times as big as the only "next page" button it offers, but no explicit "next page" button just as big. Literally is this justifiable from a design standpoint in any way? There are 1740 pages total.
>>
>>62458690
You could also partition it and manually move the files over. Not sure if you need special cloning software, which is geared towards OS migration where you'd want literally everything copied.
>>62459369
Delta encoding is a way of storing or transmitting data in the form of differences (deltas) between sequential data rather than complete files; more generally this is known as data differencing. Delta encoding is sometimes called delta compression, particularly where archival histories of changes are required (e.g., in revision control software).

The differences are recorded in discrete files called "deltas" or "diffs". In situations where differences are small – for example, the change of a few words in a large document or the change of a few records in a large table – delta encoding greatly reduces data redundancy. Collections of unique deltas are substantially more space-efficient than their non-encoded equivalents.

From a logical point of view the difference between two data values is the information required to obtain one value from the other – see relative entropy. The difference between identical values (under some equivalence) is often called 0 or the neutral element.

Anyone able to offer some really quick help with Python? Please

Add something random for "rest" argument, which shouldn't be used for login anyway. For me, I used "python ufcdl.py login" and it didn't complain about not having a second argument, but then I don't have the requests library so it stopped there.

I'm wondering what OS and filesystem, raid, parity etc I should set up on this thing? I can buy a new drive or two in a few weeks if needed.

I wanna use it to store most of my movies, games and stuff to be accessed from my main PC and also from one other PC on the network (what's the best way to do this, ftp?). Also gonna run deluge, emby and similar. Since drives aren't the same size, don't think I can use raid?

Dear /sqt.

Is there something better than Wordpress to easily setup private site? I mean, I was running one using Wordpress on free server and while it didnt require much knowledge and it was easy in use, I was wondering if there are better tools, since I will kinda have to move away from free hosting and into paid one soon. Yeah. check out >>>/g/pcbg/ for more.

i3s are barely better than pentiums but cost 2-3 as much.

i5 are weak except for 7600k, which is overpriced especially when factoring in mobo and CPU cooler. It's a little better than the ryzens for gaming, but more stuttery and much worse for non-gaming.

i7 7700k is the high framerate niche gaming CPU.

I'm planning on building a PC with a micro ATX case, Zalman T3 to be exact. It has 1 standard rear fan, and space for 3 optional side and front fans (and I want to install all 3); now afaik my Gigabyte motherboard has pins for only 2 fans, so I guess I'll have to get a molex- 2x3pin splitter for the other 2 fans I wanna install, but if I connect these 2 fans to theh PSU through a molex head and not to the mobo, then there's no way the system could control their rpm and they'll just go on full rpm all the time, right? Unless I bought fans with temp sensors and control, I guess. Are those any good? Cheers

I installed esr alongside vanilla. I'm assuming you can run them all that way. Although I didn't really pay attention to whether they shared addons/profiles, and that's probably the big thing you have to look out for. Even portable installs tend to have that problem.

Not all, once I tried running Nightly and vanilla/beta (don't remember) at the same time and it wouldn't let me open one without closing the other.
>>
>>62463511
Well, you could always sandbox one of them. Although I really wouldn't bother with two versions. As far as old addon support, it's not looking good for any of them. ESR is solid till july, but it seems to break netflix and will probably only get worse. Nightly has an option for legacy, but mozilla said they could start breaking that at any time. Waterfox has made a big deal about legacy, but that's pretty much just one dude, which is not how you want your browser handled, and the project is going to be pretty much fucked when ff main hard forks into the new engine.

A VM is the right way to "ease in", but it's like getting into a cold pool. You'll get some pains as the water level passes your balls. You'll either click away from the VM to use your windows software until you forget why you wanted to try Linux, or you'll get hooked on a Linux program which outclasses it's counterpart by miles, and you'll be unhappy whenever you are in Windows. A VM succeeds in giving you half of both, but you only ever get the worst of both worlds. You may use a VM, but to me, that misses the point.

Since when 1866 SO-DIMM sticks exist?
>>
>>62463777
Well, if you can't find some external reader that will hook you up, it's either roll with ESR or Waterfox. If you can't stand using them as your main driver, do the sandbox thing. Hopefully the author will eventually figure out how to port it.

I mean I can understand why. It's not just fixing a couple of tweaks. In many cases it's a complete rewrite, and they have to figure out entirely new ways of doing even the most basic tasks, with loads of stuff not being possible at all. Plus a lot of these addons were pet projects that really weren't earning any money for their developers. Mozilla's put everyone in a pretty rough spot. Four people sharing. My thoughts are that the second option is worth it over the first due to the doubled upstream, but the 200-300 options wouldn't really be worth it over the first two since 76 is enough for multiple 4K streams. Is there some software I could try using to get access to the drive, or is it completely dead?

You're going to want to invest in the following:
Code Complete, 2nd Edition
Design Patterns by Gang of Four (yes, you can actually search for Gang of Four)
A true textbook about your language of choice and its features. For me, it's C# .NET so I can choose C# In Depth by Skeet and C# 6.0 and the .NET 4.6 Framework by Troelsen and Japiske
A Pluralsight subscription

For you, it sounds like you're in the self-taught position of "i understand the basic language constructs and can do textbook questions that just function from the command line" and you want to move on to doing larger things. You probably don't need Design Patterns yet, so you can just get it and push it to the back of your mind until you need it, but Code Complete is more relevant to where you are now. What my buddy told me is that you don't have to treat Code Complete like a textbook you should read from front to back, although there's no harm in doing so. It's best to treat it like a reference manual, so say you run into an issue about how to design some part of your program: you look up something close to what you're trying to implement and read the chapter on that subject.

Unless you're doing things that are performant (i.e., your program must be able to perform a lot very, VERY quickly and use as few resources as possible while doing so), I won't tell you to pick up an algorithms book. You can get a cursory introduction to Data Structures and Algorithms from a course on Pluralsight that's not some random pajeet telling you to do the needful.

read books in your preferred language orientated for beginners, some languages will have better intros than others i.e., industry leading languages will be better than niche languages and normie languages will assume far too little from you and might be a detriment, do the programming exercises in each book without copy/pasting, read more books on the language, do more exercises from the books and start on your own even if it means rewriting what somebody else has wrote before on github, start reading more books on the theory side of things like the sicp, read more advanced books on your language if you feel it's necessary, start reading more advanced comp sci/theory books not necessarily related to your language, etc, etc

pic related is one for c++ and I can't say how good it is but it has been posted about and the scip is generally well regarded, what books you read depend largely on your language, how far you want to study, what you're studying for, etc, which nobody but you can really decide on so the best advice would be to just start reading and doing, when you learn more you'll be able to search for better ideas to fill your knowledge gaps

at the end of the day you only need to know a *tiny* little bit about the fundamentals before you're able to start dissecting small projects on github which can be some great experience if not some awful education, if you just want to be able to copy/paste shit from stackoverflow or elsewhere to get shit working you won't have to spend very much time on it at all, but if you want to start doing large complicated projects you'll need a serious amount of study and constant progression and improvement else you'll end up in the trap of thinking you know everything and the quality of your work will suffer greatly for it

Have a job where you can muck around with small things during work hours is the dream scenario for learning. If you're a student or unemployed (aka not someone who calls themselves a NEET), the best thing you can do is... just do it. It sounds incredibly obvious and stupid, but it's one of those things where you hear it and go, "oh, well that's obvious, what kind of advice is that?" Your problem isn't related to any one language, language paradigm, book, or website, contrary to what retards on here peddle, it's just the way you approach studying.

I'm pretty sure you have a book or a collection of books, based on the way you've phrased your question. Just set aside a short time block that you will do nothing but review or exercises. Not a long block, maybe 20-40 minutes depending on how you feel, but 30 minutes seems to be a sweet spot for most. The worst thing you can do is beat yourself up over missing out on review/coding exercises because that just makes you say to yourself, "I'll just do it for LONGER, TOMORROW" and you put yourself in a negative reinforcement cycle.

The act of review/exercise shouldn't FEEL like a chore. Just do one thing. If you read, don't do it in front of a computer. Have a book version of a textbook. That's why I like books: they get you away from the computer, you can write in them, put post-it notes in them, etc. Exercises are great because you can say "oh i'll only spend 20 minutes on this one question and call it" and next thing you know you're perusing stackoverflow trying to find pointers for the second or third exercise.

Just don't beat yourself up over missing a day or for only spending 20-30 minutes. Feeling guilty about forgetting to study is actually harmful towards studying for retention. Another awful thing you can do is consider following a grinding regiment where you plan out an entire superchain of books, it's just as bad as grinding leetcode/CTCI questions and thinking it'll make you a better programmer.

in general content carriers are not legally responsible for illegal content generated by their users, so long as they comply with law enforcement in certain defined ways

this is the roughly the same reason that moot2 isn't on the hook when someone posts illegal content on 4chan

CP isn't stored on Tor routers in any reifiable form. it's trafficked by the Tor protocol, in a manner that's almost directly analogous to your ISP routing HTTPS traffic. your ISP can't inspect and filter encrypted traffic, and similarly Tor routers can't inspect and filter Tor traffic

it's hard to imagine a legal argument against Tor routers or the Tor protocol that wouldn't apply equally well to your ISP or HTTPS, in which case all e-commerce is illegal and the global economy is impossibly fucked

Tor, and your ISP, do not have to filter encrypted illegal traffic because it's an unreasonable burden. there are obvious legal uses of Tor (journalism), just as there are obvious legal uses of HTTPS (commerce), and of 4chan (shitposting). these services are not liable for illegal users so long as they comply with reasonable requirements defined by law. the liability rests with the actual perpetrator, not the technology they used to commit the crime

I'm using Nicotine+ on my Raspberry Pi that runs 24/7. I have a problem where if I download or someone downloads from me after the program has been running for a few hours, the download/upload stalls with a "waiting for peer to connect" message. Restarting the program fixes it, but I want to avoid this. Any solutions? Or should I be using some other client? I'm new to this Soulseek stuff.

How can i subscribe to all shared caldav calendars using thunderbird/lightning at once?
Even simple android apps automatically sync all calendars that are shared for the user to see. Lightning doesn't.
The alternative is to subscribe to each, one by one. But knowing my client's dysfunctional, women-only environment, such an operation will be necessary every other week.

I've got a buzzing noise emanating from the front-bottom of my PC. It could be the front fan, but it started when I installed my new 2TB HDD like a year ago. I ran a test using HDTune on the HDD and it came up with zero bad sectors or errors. Normally I give my case a kick whenever the buzzing gets too loud/obnoxious, and it usually dies down (although sometimes it takes a couple of tries to find the sweet spot/angle for the kick).

Lately the buzzing has been more sporadic; what really made me worried is that today, it was really loud, and when I gave a kick windows instantly BSOD, citing a paging error.

Right now it's manageable, although interestingly enough earlier it started being really loud again - and became completely silent as soon as I tilted my PC a bit. I ended up putting a thick book (like 1cm) under one corner to shut it up. After a while (a couple of hours) it started up again, and lo and behold, tilting it back silenced it again - so I removed the book.#

I'm running an HD Tune scan on it again, but being 2TB it will take a good 20 minutes to complete. So far everything is green though. But then again, could something be mechanically wrong with the drive without affecting its data integrity?

Tl;dr: are HDDs known to buzz while otherwise functioning perfectly with absolutely no other issues, should I be worried, or should I even replace the drive?

Well, that's why most people would think google's terrible. Terrible as a company. But they also bubble you by tailoring search results to you so you "better" find shit. I really don't like this, and in my experience this sometimes gets worse results across different people, most notable when I'm comparing reverse image searches for doujinshi and shit.
But again, it's mostly just people not liking the company, not their products.

I'm actually in a C++ course and desu I am floundering and just barely getting my assignments done but that's because my study habits are poor and I get so demotivated when I start working and then dont have any clue what to do and the textbook we were provided is absolutely atrocious and the exercises are random and there is no coherent lesson plan or structure to how we are being "taught." I know that complaining doesn't help so I am motivated to study on my own but I feel like I am drowning. Should I do other examples from other books which relate to the topics which my class exercises are on?

Are there any good "tutorial" style C++ courses online that anyone could link to me? I did all the exercises in codeacademy but I didnt like it very much and felt like it didnt teach me anything except what loops and functions were. Is a physical book better? Not saying that that's the issue here, but HDDs are fragile things. Consider that a platter is like 10-15 centimeter, and your magnetic needle needs to be precise enough to get terabytes of data on there. A millimeter would be enough to fuck that up.

This is the last 12 days on reddit and only posts which are full paragraphs. Should I just give up on programming and be a writefag? I was thinking though of writing novels which are kind of interactive and have artwork and implementing is as a website with the aesthetics and feel of the ruby tutorial:

But yeah I am joking about giving up on programming because I think writefags have a hard time making dosh without other skills but I wonder if there are any other ways I could apply my writing autism with computer programming? I guess i could make a programming book for kids like the ruby guy did.

That's some serious autism desu. But while I can't comment on your writing without having a good sample, I can certainly tell you that typing a lot doesn't make you a good writer. Being able to write a rambling, 2000 word reply during some discussion about some topic doesn't mean that you can create good characters, a good plot, with proper pacing, good worldbuilding, etc. etc. etc.
Technical writing is easier in that regard, but also much less rewarding. Might as well stick to writing code in that case.

That's the fucking point.

I type at like 95 WPM through sheer shitposting, having never taken any sort of typing course, training, or tuition (they didn't even teach that at my school at all). I have been shitposting for years; when I was like 12, I'd spend at least a couple of hours per day on the lego forums, and went from there. These days, I usually spend at least 3 hours per day on 4chan, posting random crap.

If typing a lot made someone a good writer, I'd be, if not a famous novelist, at least a successful published writer. But I am, in fact, a guy who still doesn't know anything about writing. And that completely proves my point.

At least in school when we are asked to write essays I am perfectly comfortable doing it, and those assignments are a breeze to me, and the only challenging part is formatting and citing sources how they want but I agree that it doesn't help me write non fiction, but still I feel comfortable communicating with text and my fingers at least know how to move fast. Not to blow smoke up my own ass or anything, but I have at least received some compliments on my reddit posts about them being well thought out and backed up by sources and reminding people of "the good old days" before shills and shitposters. Anyway I'm not deluded into thinking that it makes me an especially good fiction writer (or even a good non-fiction writer) and I admit that writing a longer, organized, non-fiction dissertation would be much more challenging but something that I could begin challenging myself with. I don't think that I am good by any means just that Im at the point where I can start to git-gud and may even be possibly at the point where I could write some BS political book or ghost write for an E-celeb.

>technical writing is easier in that regard, but also much less rewarding. Might as well stick to writing code in that case.
I understand. And I like solving problems and any skill that can make me more creative is attractive to me, but like I said earlier I am incredibly frustrated right now. Nothing is worse than knowing what you want the program to do but not understanding how the programming language works with regards to syntax and class structure. I still think that object orientated programming in general is confusing, and with regards to c++; I feel you are forced to write commands which seem like they should be unnecessary, such as set and get methods.

?

I have a bad habit, especially in more formal writings, of slipping into purple prose and writing huge sentences. But at least in those cases, the sentence is perfectly well-structured, just hard to read.
(Here's an example of purple prose from Lovecraft, to give you a general idea of what I'm talking about: http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/essays/cd.aspx
And here's an example sentence:
>The dog would appear to me to be the favourite of superficial, sentimental, emotional, and democratic people—people who feel rather than think, who attach importance to mankind and the popular conventional emotions of the simple, and who find their greatest consolation in the fawning and dependent attachments of a gregarious society.)

But your sentence I quoted above is almost a run-on sentence joined together by "and, and but, but and". That's not very good style. Do you write your reddit posts better? Because if not, I would definitely advise spending effort on communicating your ideas more concisely.
The same can be said about your walls of text with no paragraph breaks.

Yeah, that's exactly what I do because when I am typing fast I just type exactly what I am thinking,so I feel like I would have to cut out information to remedy it quickly. Obviously if I type a post that's thousands of words long I will go back and edit it, as I've invested so much time. However forcing myself to type the initial draft more eloquently would be beneficial. Honestly, if you hadn't criticized me I probably would have continued this habit for god knows how much longer.

>The same can be said about your walls of text with no paragraph breaks.
What do you think is the optimal length of a paragraph? I have always thought that it's 4-6 sentences. I know that guys like Chuck Palahniuk write shorter paragraphs but then if I do that here people accuse me of "reddit spacing."

My "wall of text" was 4 sentences, 7 rows, so which one is more important on 4chan and reddit respectively?
>>
>>62468497
4-6 sentences where a sentence is maybe 10-20 words, I'd say. Your sentences were like 100 words or something.

Lines vary wildly - for instance, you say 7 lines, but on my screen your wall was 6 lines - so as a more standardised measured, I'd say 10-15 lines each 80 characters long is a good length for a paragraph. Of course, there's no such thing as an "average" paragraph, as most will be longer or shorter; the important thing to keep in mind is the rule of "one line of thought per paragraph". If you can add a logical break, do.

For instance, in my first paragraph I quickly refuted your point, then wrote a longer paragraph with more details, and here we have another shorter one where I present my example.
>>
>>62468600
I agree with you but wouldn't someone accuse you of "reddit spacing" with regards to your last post.
Is this really how we are supposed to type on 4chan?
>>
>>62468707
You can always use a single line break between paragraphs.
