----
Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My dad brought home his old work laptop, an HP Elitebook 8460p, and after I inquired what he was planning to do with it, he offered it to me. The only problem it is still configured on his work network. I would like to use this media streaming PC but would need to restore it.

I need some guidance restoring it please.
So he gave me his login credentials, and I can see that "System Restore Settings" are locked to the company IT admin.

What are my options? Is there any way I can restore this using all of the same hardware/software (Windows 7 Pro)?
Or would I need to purchase another hard drive and configure that separately?

Apologies if these are stupid/basic questions, but after doing some research I see that a lot of people are trying to do a "Factory Restore" and end up having to buy new Windows Installation disks.
I would ideally like to not put any money into this machine as I do not need it, but would like to get it working for media streaming etc.
Any help/guidance/resources/guides are greatly appreciated.

No I don't have a copy of W7. I have never had to install an OS before, so I not quite sure where to start.
>download one
>Buy one
>Re-use the same W7 key that is on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop?

So there is no way for me to use the W7 key that came w/ the laptop? If not, then what would you say is the next best way to get a copy of W7 to install on the wiped drive?
>>
>>62454108
Just install the OS you'd like to use. I wouldn't waste time on restoring a cluttered old installation of Windows. It would take more time and probably run slower than a fresh install.
>>
>>62454164
Okay that's good to know.

I would like to install W7, but where should I get a copy of W7 to install?
>>
>>62454163
1. Download ISO from Microsoft
2. Use Rufus to make bootable USB
3. Install Windows
4. Try to use the license key from the sticker
5. If it doesn't work, use Windows Loader by Daz to activate
>>
>>62454163
>So there is no way for me to use the W7 key that came w/ the laptop?
why not? as long as you install the correct version of Windows, be it home/pro, whatever

get iso links from here
https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/

then you need a 4gb flash drive and use "windows usb/dvd download tool to put the iso onto the flash drive, now it's bootable and you can install Windows with it
>>
>>62454181
One more thing: Don't use the USB 3 ports to install. The Windows 7 installer only supports USB 2
>>
>>62454049
you mod the heatsink or nah?
>>
>>62454163
holy shit man get lernt

http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/
Download the one of these you need (probably Win7 Pro X64), then use Rufus (rufus.akeo.ie) to stick the iso on a flash drive, boot the computer with the flash drive, install the OS, and use the key on the bottom of the computer to activate it. It almost does everything for you.
>>
>>62454181
Okay, awesome! Now I can get busy. Thanks for the /g/uidance.

No. If they give away the laptop with the license key they don't own the key anymore. Even if they could see that it's been activated again, they couldn't do anything about it. It's now yours. Assuming that it's a genuine, legal key of course. Companies usually don't pirate stuff.

If the key doesn't initially work and it asks you to call MS' automated system, don't be afraid to do it.
As long as you have a valid license key it will spit back a number string that will let you activate it with the OEM supplied key.
Don't use KMS deactivators unless you have no valid keys.

>>
>>62454234
No problem. Just carefully read the install dialogs, they will explain what is happening (mostly).
The tricky bit might be repartitioning the hard drive, which you should do if it still has the old OS on it. Just select all of the partitions and hit the red X, then, when you only have one entry that says "unallocated space" click on it and then click the new partition button, then click create when it asks you what size to make it. The installer will create all the necessary partitions for you and use the maximum drive space.

help my BIOS is only showing LOGO1.gif

I have "OS Optimized Defaults" Enabled in the BIOS

LOGO2 is 29kb, but in the properties it also says "size on disk: 32kb", is that the problem?

Also, Windows 10 on an X230 and the "OS Optimized Defaults" mentions Windows 8 specifically, so that might be the problem as well.

$50 is cutting it hard. Either luck or more shit to deal with.

Pretty nice reviews on Amazon

All it means is that they got a laptop, tested/added the hard drive, keyboard, ports and checked if there were dead pixels on the screen.
Literally no different than a used laptop.
They might add new thermal paste, but it is highly unlikely if they are dealing with Amazon fees.

Fair enough, I really just asked for 50 just to see if it was possible and what I could get. I don't really know if I will buy a laptop or not though.

This is pretty much spot on. I work for a shop that refurbs and all we do is put in a used (but tested) hdd, maybe upgrade the ram, and test the display.

If the unit is visibly dirty/grimy inside we will do an internal cleaning and re-apply thermal paste.

Its possible
I got a T61 for $30 shipped
14.1" 4:3, 9/10 minus some odd dent
looked like a spare, no dust.
Needed HDD, battery, AC adapte and OS.

You just gotta wait and bite at the right time.
Its just that $50 is tough because dumb sellers or hard up people would sell something fully working at that price.... or you can get extremly lucky

Best of luck anon.

>>62455628
Same.
Whenever I sell hard drives, I find it funny when people want something tested further than a simple smart test.
Nigga, I'm selling a 500GB drive for $10, 14 day warranty or buy online from someone who charges $30 plus you have to pay for shipping.

We accept returns on my eBay so if it fails, we drop 1/3 of the price and sell it for parts. rarely we get issues for PCs/Laptops.

>mfw someone was mad I swapped an older GPU on a desktop but didn't want to open a return case on eBay.

So, I've just got my first T430.

I've already ordered a caddy to replace the optic drive with a HDD and I'm also thinking about ordering another SSD.

It ran smoothly until now, my main issue would be that I had problems getting the trackpoint to work. Already tried installing and uninstalling the drivers with whatever I could find on synaptic or the lenovo website to no effect.

Any ideas as to how to fix this ?

For the lid I use a microfiber cloth with damp warm water + small amounts of dish soap. I also wipe with with some rubbing alcohol afterwards because I'm a germaphobe.

For the keyboard I use a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. I wipe each key with the q-tip one by one. The touchpad as well but I don't really use it anyway.

For the screen I just use a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water. Don't use any harsh chemicals on the screen.

I do all of these once a month and so far

I had the same problem, I think like only half of music was going throught. It wasn't always, a few restarts and it would work fine.
I tried reinstalling Bluetooth drivers and the problem went away
>>
>>62464822
Fair point. Was just wondering if anyone here has held the thing and used it.
>>
Anyone have a T440p + GT 730M? How well can the thing handle some videogaymin? A thinkpad I could actually play something on sounds interesting, though the whole trackpad relying on virtual buttons thing is certainly a downside.
>>
Got a T430.

BIOS has never been updated.

Should I update it? Or, would it make it harder to do hardware whitelisting later if I want to swap out the wifi card?

Should I apply the Intel ME security vulnerability firmware update? I've disabled Intel AMT in the BIOS.

Hey question about stickers if the sticker guy that sold them is around, i asked a buddy to pay mine since i don't have a PayPal and i have him the money back, i asked if he had a tracking email and he says he never checks emails, when he pulled up his email it was loaded with just spam, and im curious if the hurricane fucked some shipping (also i used the 1$ shipping and couldn't change it by email either rip)

Ok maybe I'm just retarded but I need help with something stupid. I have a ThinkPad R60 from 2006 and it has a T2300 CPU that's 32-bit. That's fine and all but I have a use for this machine which requires a 64-bit CPU. So I had pic related in my desk drawer which the Intel website says is an Intel Pentium B940? That's what I got after Googling SR07S which is stamped onto pic related. If that's correct then it's 64-bit which is just what I need. So can anyone tell me if the R60 is compatible? And even if it isn't supported officially but it fits in the socket, what's the worst that could happen if I were to use it?

I'm a poorfag and I would prefer not to spend $40 on the CPU that's confirmed to work with this if I don't have to.

You should get a Core 2 Duo T7200, best CPU for T/R60s. I put one in my R60, and it's a worthwhile upgrade.

only non-slim T and W series, Xs are soldered.

You can't use the Pentium because it's too new of a CPU, and a different socket.
>>
>>62467364
