'morning anons.
What hardware / chassis would g recommend for building a domestic firewall?
It needs to be silent or very close to it and be able to take two PCI NIC's (GB ethernet card and a wireless card) or Three NICS if no onboard LAN.
I did this before with a refurbed desktop core 2 duo off ebay but my house got power surge / nuked a few weeks ago. Core 2 Duo was perfect - you couldnt hear the fan and it never got above 15pc CPU running IPTables, Snort IDS, Airodump-ng.
I have been looking at ebay for another refurbed desktop but they seem thin on the ground now. I also looked at the wikipedia entry for form factors and there were approx a gorillion of the fuckers.
Can install Gentoo if necessary. (No I'm serious, I might give that a go with this box)
that was a bit convoluted heres the TLDR:
>onboard GB ethernet
> space for 2 PCI cards
> Fanless
> smallish form factor (SFF or lower)
Thanks anons.
bumping for interest.
Sounds like you're looking for a Proliant microserver (Gen 8)
2 GB ethernet ports out of the box, a PCI slot, pretty small, only about $200
It's not fanless, but not loud enough that you'd really notice.
Honestly just get another shitbox if you're not too worried about power
> cheap
> enough CPU grunt
> pci(-e) slots

thnx anon, they look excellent. Though I'm a bit nervous about embedded system. I'll be running node.js on it as well. I think I want something x86/x64. Will an embedded chip limit the code that I can run on it? I'm guessing yes?
Very very nice choice though, and on eBay for fifty quid.

thanks anon, looks a bit overkill though and more than I want to spend.
Also it will be about five yards away from my couch - needs to be quiet and a bit smaller.
Thanks for the tip tho - nice system, good management tools especially.

yeah, its weird though - absolutely nothing on ebay right now in the UK from what I can see. I think if I wait a week or two a reseller should probably dump some old office stock.
The last one I got was about £70 and it came with a WIndows 7 Pro licence. That's the sweet spot. I already have the PCI GB ethernet and Wireless cards to swap in so if I see something like thats probs what I'll go for again.
Core 2 Duo machines are fucking excellent lightweight servers - quiet as mice and solid as rocks.
