----
Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Quiet thread, that's for sure.

Anyway, anyone have a T500? I'm thinking about putting windows 7 on it if I did get a thinkpad (discounted windows activation keys for college, seriously $10), but I'm wondering how does the t500 fair?

My ultraportable 65W ac adapter for my x200 is making a fizzing sound. Search results tell me, this is bad and its gonna die soon.
Can I just use an ordinary 65W ac adapter? Any concerns about buying an offbrand one from the chinks?
The laptop was just 90 $ so I dont really wanna throw 30$ on a lenovo ac adapter.

What would be the best business laptop to use if I want to use it docked as a desktop replacement?
I'm gonna be moving around alot for the next 5-6 years and would like to just buy a cheap monitor and ditch it when I leave; taking the laptop and M&K with me, rather than lug around a desktop.
The only requirements are a good cpu, dedicated GPU for emulating and 2007 era games, the ability to have over 3 drives and preferable at least 1 msata/m.slot and linux support.
Is there a thinkpad that fits this for around 500 americlaps? I've been doing some research and it looks like the elitebook 8770w is a pretty good machine, expensive on ebay though.

fedora is great. Don't forget to use rpm fusion for fonts/codecs and copr for shit you would want to find in the AUR.

I'll take a better pic when I have better lighting, but my W500 is complete!

- Core2 Duo T9600 Processor
- 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD Ultrabay Caddy
- Japanese Keyboard (A new one, too!)
- Librebooted

Honestly I expected to make a bigger list of modifications, but I didn't really need to do a whole lot to this thing to make it comfy. Awesome device, would recommend!

Yeah you just have an old battery. According to lenovo's website your full charge should be at around 60 watt hours. You're at half that, which explains why you have half the normal battery life.
I think there are ways to replace the cells if you're into that sort of thing but just buy a new one if you don't know how to solder

Hey guys, I've recently been gifted a T30 with 256 MB of ram (up to 1 Gb at best) and 20 Gb of hard drive. I was considering just leaving it there but I thought I might give it a shot.

What do you guys use your ancient thinkpads for? Could I technically install an ultra-light distro and use it as a seedbox? It's a shame to see such a fine antique just gathering dust.

While this may not seem like an issue at first it gets really annoying when you're trying to hit the middle button and rest your finger on the right button and it clicks both
It gets in the way a lot

You can fix it which is what I'd recommend for a T440p or whatever but for the X240? I'd just recommend not buying it in the first place

Gonna go ahead and ask for a recommendation, since you guys have completely sold me (this design is fucking beautiful).

I've got about £400 to spend (though I could push to more if it's really worth it). I'm more than willing to take a HDD over an SSD to maximise memory value (longer boot/loading doesn't bother me really), infact i'd prefer it.

I'm doing CompSci at Uni (work is the main reason i'm getting it), and I will want to play at least some kind of vidya on it (though i'm not expecting to be able to play anything recent and demanding, obviously).

T440p with a GT730m, if you get lucky on ebay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T440p-8-GB-256-SSD-Windows-10-NVIDIA-GT730-Graphic-Card-/172864184434?hash=item283f822072:g:63gAAOSwaeRZK-6q

Example. I'll find the writeup I did for the T440p and dump that.
>>
>>62448939
>>62448911

Completely Official /tpg/ T440p buyer's guide

CPU - i3 dual, i5 dual, i7 dual, i7 quad. Middle is pointless, latter is marked with MQ. I've never seen an i3. Easy to swap. Most commmon ones - i5 4200m, i5 4300m, i7 4700mq. Best upgrade is either a 4712mq for equivalent wattage to the dual cores or 4710/4810/4910 for higher clocks, depending on which one you can find for cheap. Only big difference between those is clocks, 4700/4800/4900 work fine as well. 8xx/9xx have 1.3ghz iGPU vs 1.15. Note - haven't actually seen proof of a 4712 working, it's not on the official compatibility list but it should work.

RAM - PC3-12800 1600MHZ DDR3L 1.35v standard, up to 2133mhz aftermarket. Two slots, both swappable. 16GB max, pretty sure that's a Haswell limit.

Storage - one internal SATA 2.5 bay, one internal M.2 2242 SSD slot, optional one 2.5 drive in the DVD """"UltraBay"""" drive bay. It might not be clear where the drives in the one you're buying are, ask if you want to know. MSATA drives can be used if you cut the adaptor in half, apparently.

Screen - 766p/900p TN, 1080p IPS. 1080 swap is cheap, not a big deal. B140HAN01.1, .2 or .3 are recommended. IIRC it's matte/glossy/semi-matte in that order.

Battery - 6cell or 9cell, latter has a rear bulge. Worth it.

Trackpad - if you want the classic style, swap it for the T450 one. Just remove the backplate, the palmrest, the keyboard and replace the touchpad which is a component of the palmrest. Reassemble and done.

Keyboard - modern Lenovo chiclet, can't be swapped unlike xx30 series. By chiclet standards it's pretty damn good though.

GPU - GT730M. For productivity, pretty much pointless, I'd avoid it. For gayman, about 2x as powerful as the iGPU. Good luck finding one though, they're rare. Can't be swapped without swapping the motherboard. Disabled to save power when not in use through Optimus, not a big deal.
>>
>>62448911
you must be a huge ignoramus to prefer an HDD over an SSD, especially in a laptop

>>
>>62448939

>>62448966

>>
>>62448573
I wonder if this would have better GPU performance than Ubuntu on my x220 tablet
>>
>>62449046
It's not just loading times lad, every single thing you do on the computer is faster. It's a bigger difference than upgrading to a five year newer computer, IMO.
>>
>>62449046
if you don't care about load times (which you will start caring about once you use an SSD and notice how bad the loading times are), then maybe power consumption, or the noise, or vibrations, or reliability, could possibly be appealing to you

I bought a refurbished X230 a while back and I want to sell it now, I've upgraded from 4 to 8GB RAM and put a 500GB SSD in it. I want to keep the SSD so I can reuse it but should I sell it with 4 or 8GB RAM?

I don't really care about getting the most amount of value out of it as long as I get like $100-150 out of it but I assume that I'll have an easier time selling it if I sell it with 8GB RAM instead of 4?

Or should I just sell it like it came? I don't really have any use for laptop RAM since I'm going to replace it with a desktop.

Got my T420 yesterday, great little machine. Surprisingly good condition, the 900p screen looks like butt though but beggars can't be choosers considering I got it for a fairly low price and the battery held a 4 hour charge last night which seems pretty good for a used battery. I stuck an SSD in it but it had a HDD but my optical adapter is still in shipping limbo.

This is my first Thinkpad so using the trackpoint is extremely awkward for me, it doesn't feel precise at all. Any tips on making it a little easier?

Also I'm using Windows at the moment since it came with a free Pro key but what's a good distro for a beginner to learn Linux?
>>
>>62450204
Try lowering the sensitivity of the trackpoint and disabling the trackpad. It'll force you to use the trackpoint and you'll get used to it eventually.

Took me a couple weeks before the trackpoint clicked with me tbqh. It's kind of unnatural to use at first.

Noticed a bit of wobble on the battery of my L460 today and found this. Genuinely surprised me considering how careful i am with my laptop. Gonna try some superglue and pray that it sticks.

Actually, I'm uncertain. I'll ask around because if so I'd be interested in buying one.

Trackpoint is superior, plus I use the keyboard for a lot of my navigation anyways so anytime I do need to use the cursor the trackpoint is a god send because it allows me to keep my hands on the keyboard at all times.

What phones do you use? What would be the thinkpad equivalent?

My dad was a janitor at an office building and they decided to mass upgrade all their laptops. They were just outright throwing away dozens and dozens of Thinkpads.

My dad thought it was a waste and he brought with him like, 30 of them. No joke.

Eventually sold them all on Ebay but he gave me a couple to tinker with. They were mostly like T400's.

This happened to me. I only had super glue so I made do. I squished it in so it was fully saturated between the join points. I also made sure there was enough glue around the outside that it would form a solid shell after it took forever to harden. It's been fine so far, this was over 6 months ago. Kinda forgot about it.

Soapy water.
Iso propyl alcohol diluted and a soft cloth
A baby wipe
All purpose cleaner

I've used all of those before at some point to varying success depending on what I had available.

Alcohol is probably best for sticker shit tho.

Macbook pro retina 2015 (and 256 SSD) for $400

Can I find better with thinkpads? Considering the most basic X230 is at $220 (without ssd) where I live. And the integrated graphic is worse (I just want to play cs:go, and HD4000/4400 is borderline) They also have way worse screen (768) and a processor a bit older

T440p are at $320 without SSD, same inconvenience than the X230.
On top of that the battery life really won't be the same.

I love my X200 (screen broke that's why I'm looking for something new) so I'd like another thinkpad but this offer might be really good.

Guys, my T420 "squeaks" when doing stuff like changing focus from window to window, typing the first letter in a text box of a messaging app or when scrolling a website using the arrow keys.

It's not coming from the speakers and sounds like squeaky static. It's more noticeable when on battery power. Should I be worried?

Debian 9, with Xfce. It's gotten even weirder, since the "squeak during focus switch" seems to happen with windows belonging to certain programs (happens with Telegram appimage, doesn't happen with Thunar).

I've known about them for years. My first ThinkPad (and actually, my first laptop) was a 600E back in 2005. I got a T23 a couple years later. I sold both of them and got a 16-inch "multimedia" Asus laptop.

Then four years ago I decided to sell it and get an X200t, and I haven't looked back. Thanks to /g/ I've also added a T430 to my collection and bought a T420 and Dell D620 for my parents.
