If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN P, T, X, and W SERIES if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended IBM models:
X60, X61, T60, T61, 860, Transnote, PC110

Recommended old models:
X200, W500

Recommended modern models:
X220 - 12", 768x1366, cheap and light
T420 - normal size, 14", 900x1600
T520 - 15", 1080p, Quadcore-CPUs
W520 - desktop replacement, 15", USB 3.0

Last good models:
X230 - 12", USB 3.0, IPS option avaiable, classic keyboard installable
T440p - 14", last ThinkPad to have replacable CPUs, 1080p IPS displays avaiable
----
Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Repoast

Decided to boot up my win install to rice my BIOS screen. I'm running Win10 LTSB on an X220 here.
I was reading the readme on the BIOS utility and it seems to be for a UEFI BIOS whereas mine is running a legacy BIOS.

Anyone know where/how I can update/acquire the legacy one? I'm still looking around but I haven't found it yet.

If this is the same fix as I'm thinking of, theres a caveat to this. It'll mean that you can't do the usual middle mouse + clit to scroll. Instead, it will toggle that dopey thing that appears when you middle click on a normal mouse. Personally for me, that felt worse than losing the proper middle click so I kept it as is.

You should find out what state your battery is in, because if it has low life because it's actually done then you need to replace it.

Thinking it has to be my battery, I bought this pretty cheap with a 9 cell, but only lasts me a few hours just browsing.
>>
>>62429931
My 9 cell ran for about 30 minutes when I first bought my X220. I just had to replace it when I had the money. It held something like 11Wh when it was rated for 94Wh or whatever.

Run this. Assuming you've calibrated your battery it should tell you how much charge its holding.

sudo tlp stat -b

If you haven't, then run
sudo tlp recalibrate

I think that should do it.

I culd get Thinkpad 320(14 incher) with i5-7200U for 550 or Lenovo Yogas 520 with i3-7100U 600

Really makes me wonder if I value increase in performance over looks, screen, batterylife and portability. Not sure if I really need the extra oomph as a student either.

I guess buying used Thinkpad would give even better specs but models are darn old and battery life is a question. They tend to be bigger/heavier and tend to have worse screen too

hard to say, you can either get it used if possible, off of ebay or iirc there is a big site that has almost every single notebook screen you could own, they sell them for quite a bit more though, for that you are sure to get your screen in a good condition. Hi tpg, today I really felt this ThinkPad autistic for the first time.
In the uni library I spotted the only ThinkPad in the hall. It had a 7 row keyboard and really looked like a tablet with 4:3 Res, not sure tho. As for as the **20 keyboard layout goes, the delete key has to be large. depends what your idle power usage is and what battery is in it, it could be correct, these things are easy to check on Windows and Linux then simply use your own judgement if a new battery would make a difference

fully discharging the battery is bad and so is fully charging it, it depends how much battery you use but ideally you would want the mean somewhere in the middle
personally I do 85-90%

it doesnt do anything well in terms of secondhand

if you want better performance get a x220
if you want libre get a x200
x201 does neither well
