What's the current state of AMD GPU drivers for Linux? Performance? Support of AMD-specific technologies?
>>62422685
What kind of a vague question is this? Current state?
>>62422738
I meant what's the diffrence between open-source and proprietary drivers, how many of diffrent drivers exist for them etc.

>I meant what's the diffrence between open-source and proprietary drivers
Well, the open-source drivers can be studied, modified and redistributed freely whereas the proprietary drivers cannot.
>>62422800
Yeah, sure, but what about performace? Are there any major performance diffrences between those drivers? What do they support or not?
>>62422830
What AMD GPU do you have?
>>62422896
I don't have one, but I think about buying one. That's why I'm asking if it's like with NVIDIA cards, where open-source drivers are slower but support some additions like hardware video decoding, while closed-source are faster but don't support those.
>>62422929
Looks like you've done your research already. We can't tell you which card is best for your use case. Google some more and you can make your own decision. Here are just shills telling your to buy either brand A or B just because of their believes and not because of a pragmatic consideration.

TL;DR: AMDGPU is doing well for everything up to rx580, for Vega AMD tried to push a DAL to which Linux kernel team said no, big rewrite and review in the works now.
>>62422685
AMD is better for linux right now, up to RX580 as >>62423067 mentioned. They recently replaced the shitty old FGLRX driver and with AMDGPU which is open-source. For the most part anyway, there's a version of it called AMDGPU-PRO with proprietary spinoffs of a few components (OpenGL, Vulkan, OpenCL) that in some cases runs faster compared to the fully open driver, in other cases it's slower.

10 bit freesync doesn't work currently (tested on rx 480 recently)
or rather, there are some "discoloration issues" with some applications
other than that it's fine
Free driver is very good and only getting better. NVIDIA is getting more cucked.
