Because someone has to maintain the huge and constantly changing lists of people that are hosting every file, instead of just pointing directly to the host.
It violates privacy because now everyone knows what files you've viewed.
It causes legal complications because now you are potentially hosting and/or linking to illegal content.
Content can never be updated.
