I'm still sticking with W7, so I use Ultimate 64-bit. I recently made a fresh install of W7, and currently, I'm moving some worthwhile files from the old HD of mine to the other new HD I'm currently using. I also plan to customize my desktop, but I don't know how it should look like.

I just downgraded yesterday, actually. Battlefield 1 runs like dogshit with the Creator's Update. (https://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-admits-to-gaming-performance-issues-in-windows-10-creators-update)

So I downgraded because I needed to reinstall either way and Battlefield 1 runs perfectly. I'm sticking with Windows 7 for the foreseeable future. Plus there are a ton of great themes that were made for it over the years, 10 has some but I love aero. I know I can use aeroglass but development is very slow and it's been very buggy for me.

Using W7 on both my main PC and laptop.
Laptop was a bit tricky as it came with W10 already, so finding drivers (particularly WiFi) was a pain.

There are legit sellers on Reddit with Pro keys for $45 that will activate in your microsoft account, and you can download 10 via the media creation tool so you know the iso isn't modified, there is a small chance that maybe 6 months later if you reinstall the key will have been revoked, but it's not likely.

You need to patch W7 first, that allows you to install themes beside the propetary Windows theme that comes with the OS, then Download the .rar file, then extract it on C:\Windows\Resources\Themes.

Pic related you'll have to do it for the major folders (music, pictures, documents). And then depending on program you'll also have to direct that to the HDD (for example if he installs games during installation process he'll have to choose the HDD).

Probably a way to "automate" the process but haven't looked into it.

I've been on the same install of Vista for 8 years and not being particularily tidy with it. Still serves me well.

Meanwhile my new win10 system just inexplicably started to cause context menus to crash entire explorer.exe while trying to play movies. It was sure as fuck nothing I did, because I made no software/system changes in the meantime. In task manager I noticed some suspicious process taking up half the processor. Googled it, it's a hidden "update" crap. Trying to google solutions for context menu problems is impossible, because they give hundreds of different issues.

That's what I'm doing on W7 now but it takes forever to boot and the system feels sluggish overall after Veracrypt's full drive encryption, this is on a quad core haswell i7 and SSD.

It's not an issue with native bitlocker, sadly the W7 version of bitlocker doesn't let you use a password like VeraCrypt unless you have a TPM module.

Try this: hit the Start button or tap the Windows key on your keyboard and type dev (just those three letters) and wait, if you don't see Device Manager appear in about 1 second or less then there's your evidence they're not the same OSes and it's a lot more than just a different GUI.
