if you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>VEGA
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor
>>
Anyone used the Seasonic Focus PSU?
>>
>>62415240
It's a recently released line so doubtful, but Seasonic is KNOWN for fantastic PSU's
>>
>>62415240
Their new line, meant to replace the G/S12G.
It's gotten good reviews.
>>
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
Threadly reminder that you can just buy a used Dell Optiplex 7010 with an i5 3570 for literally the same price as a G4560 and still get better performance in video games when you add a GPU.
>>
Can anyone help me with a build? I am looking for a ryzen build, budget of about $1000
>>
>>62415352
but then you have to factor in the costs of a new PSU and graphics card
>>
>>62415378
Which you don't have to do if you're building a new system with a G4560? Someone who's actually on a poverty tier budget doesn't spend $80-100 on just a CPU
>>
>>62415352
Used
30-day warranty
Old platform
Thanks for posting. Again.
>>
>>62415012
How fucked am I.
My case wont close with my cooler. I bought a hyper cooler evo for a fractal design mid tower. But the copper ends wont let the case close.
Should I do something desperate like drill holes in the case for the copper tips to go through, or cut the copper tips off.
>>
>>62415426
I would grind down the copper bits. Probably not a big deal if it it's not too much.
Pretty surprised a popular cooler can't fit in a mainstream, common case like that.
>>
>>62415356
R5 1600 - $200
b350 mobo - $75-100 (these and psus commonly have rebates, shop around and maybe wait if no deal is currently going on)
250GB m.2 SSD - $100
Case -$50-100
PSU - $75 (550-750W, again due to constant recurring rebate deals, you can often get nice big PSUs for the same price as their smaller iterations, shop around or wait for deals)
3200mHz RAM - $150 (pick the one you like, just ask here first before you order)
$150 - GTX1050 ti

Now the rest you can spend or save as you please
>>
>>62415240

got one for my new build, 650W

seems good, what else can i really say its been a week

the box is really nice and it has nice bags for the cords
>>
HI GUYS

IS 8700k GOING TO BE GOOD BASED ON LEAKS?
>>
>>62415506
It will probably be something like a 7700K with two more cores, more or less.
Good will depend on price.
>>
>>62415506
NO
>>
>>62415422
They're refurbished enterprise machines you idiot, I still haven't seen a single argument for why buying used is supposed to be problem when you spend a lot less money to get better performance. It being an old platform is also irrelevant since the upgrade path for buying the G4560 is shit and will also be an old platform as soon as Coffee Lake is released. The only argument for buying the G4560 is the iGPU, if you're going to add a GPU then you get the 1200.

The only valid argument is the 30 day warranty but even if it fails you're only out $100 bucks. And again, there's no logical reason for why the hardware would randomly fail at any higher rate than buying new components unless you're buying used mining equipment or something, hardware lasts a really long time if you don't treat it like a retard.
>>
>>62415506
Not unless they keep the price the same, but the current rumor is that they jacked it up to a ridiculous level.
>>
>>62415471
Wouldn't the R5 1400 / GTX1060 3GB be a better deal?

>>62415458
Id apparently have to completely cut them off.
The case can only use coolers of 148mm, the evo is 149mm without the copper tips, 158mm with.
I got the evo for $18 and I have the stock cooler, so Im not completely against experimenting.
I just have the side panel laying against the case right now.
>>
>>62415668
Maybe you can return the cooler?
>>

>>62415581

>>
>>62415579
>They're refurbished enterprise machines you idiot
Do you know what "refurbished" means? Used.
>you spend a lot less money to get better performance
The Ivy Bridge i5 has better performance than a G4560, but not by that much. Akin to buying an R3 1200.
>It being an old platform is also irrelevant
I'd rather have the option for a 7700 over a 3770.
>The only argument for buying the G4560 is the iGPU
Pretty sure the refurbished Dell should have an IGP as well.
>but even if it fails you're only out $100 bucks
And the hassle of getting yet another one, transferring data (unless it was lost entirely), etc. Not everyone has the time and patience to tinker.

But you're ultimately making an unnecessarily bad argument. There are plenty of prebuilt machines that are new that can be found at great prices, with warranties, new platforms, everything. People don't like them here, I've discovered. The simple reason being: people want to put it together themselves.
>>
>>62415725
It's impossible to say, since we don't know the performance.
>>
>>62415754
you are retarded and dont cut off the copper tips.
If you side panel doesnt close, just leave the side panel slightly on. Airflow is notthat important as long as you have intake and exhaust fans around your cpu cooler.

but you wont listen to me because you have literal autism
>>
>>62415426
>http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2226658/cut-hyper-212-evo-work.html
Cant cut the copper tips. So now Im debating if I should drill into the case, or switch back to stock. Buy a new cooler or buy a new case.
>>
>>62415852
why would you even buy a g4560 for more than $70? I can buy a 1200 for $99 and spend the same amount of money that you would on a b350 is you bought a b250 for intel
>>
>>62415979

What do you think
>>
1070 Ti was "rumored" to be released. Will the 1060 have its turn?
>>
>>62416003
Taking into account price inflation, you'd be looking at a G4600, at least in the US.
Price difference between that and an R3 1200 is $20 (85-105)
Is it worth it? You aren't doing workstation tasks on an R3, and general usage is a wash. For gaming, the difference isn't that big. It's a call the buyer needs to make.
>>
>>62416158
for gaming, I saw benchmarks that show same avg fps but 1200 has much better minimums fps.
>>
>>62416158
I bought a r5 1400 for $130 so I dont care, im just curious as to the point of an expensive pentium.
I remember g4560 selling for under $60 3 months ago. that seemed like a good deal for a 3.6 ghz cpu+mobo combo under $100
>>
>>62416226
Yes, as the price has climbed the G4560 is increasingly a bad deal. You'd be looking at a G4600.
The problem is that it starts jumping too close to the R3 to have a well defined place. But if you don't have it, the cheapest CPU you end up recommending is $100, which is unacceptable for many people. When your budget is so small, even meager increases in price can be a problem.
You could recommend Bristol Ridge, and for basic tasks it's okay. But their iGPU is still not that great, and pairing them with a dGPU has pretty bad results, and on this board most people want to game, even on a budget.
>>
>>62415983
So if I skip the top and bottom guides near the screws, I might be able to get it to snap on the front of the case and screw on to the back of the case for it to """close"""
Will this damage the heat pipes being under this kind of pressure.
>>
>>62416226
I think the G4560 was a fluke honestly. I've seen Celerons sell for the same price.
>>
>>62416342
or the mobo under it as well is a concern
>>
>>62416355
what do you mean? I think it was an excellent cpu for that microcenter combo for $100
>>
>>62416369
you are retarded fuck off
>>
>>62416355
The G4560 was intended to prevent cheap Excavator CPUs and APUs from gaining marketshare. Intel didn't mind cannibalizing their own i3 line if it meant shutting AMD out of the market.
>>
>>62416435
well looks like intel has fucked them selves then if they cost $80 now

Is there a guide to dismantle a computer?
I bought a custom PC from a friend and he built it for me, but I'd like to learn how to dismantle it for maintenance and replacement of parts.
>>
How can I tell if a tower has a internal DVD drive slot on PCPartPicker?

Will the 1060 6GB go down in price anytime soon? It's nearly $150 more than the 1050 TI.
>>
>>62416457
The prices rise due to demand. Because people are willing to pay the price.
It's not entirely analogous, and AMD isn't entirely happy with this state of affairs, but running out of GPUs due to the mining craze isn't entirely against AMD's interest. After all, they're selling cards.

Just grab a screwdriver (a phillips head, preferably with a magnetic head), follow the basic rules of working on a rig, use some common sense and don't be a brainlet.
Here are the simple rules:
1) Always release the static from your body before touching anything sensitive. Just touch anything made of metal, even your case, and don't work on a carpet.
2) If it won't go in or won't come out, don't force it, you're probably doing something wrong.
3) Cable management is important, Don't let your cables get in the way of your fans.
4) When bolting something on that uses multiple screws, either start with the center screw (if there is one) or just start at whichever screw and then do the one at the exact opposite end. Always work diagonally, in other words.

Everything else is fairly simple. All the cables only go into one their proper socket easily and they only go in one way. The different screws might confuse you, just memorize where they all go.
Don't be afraid, opening your case is as simple as taking out the screws on the back of the side panel. You can clean it with a paintbrush, a bike pump or compressed air. Taking out the graphics cards is as simple as taking out the screw and PCI-E cables and pulling it out.

If you feel like you need any more help, just look at one of the THOUSANDS of build guides on youtube.
>>
>>62416804
Depends on what you want to do.
>>
>>62416720
>>62416758
would it maybe help turning the cooler around so the little "AMD" flap on the side of the cooler is facing the other way?

i hope it fits
>>
>>62416850
Put the RAM in first and try it out that way and flip it if that gets in the way
I am sure it will work either way no matter what

>>62416700
They aren't getting BTFO though. They just need to redo their pricing with the new Coffee Lake. Intel is still a perfectly valid choice even now. AMD just finally manage to catch up (somewhat) in terms of performance and STILL has to rely on things like aggrssive pricings, "muh cores", offering unlocked CPUs and hinting at better upgradability.

Get thin pieces of wood, paint them black, and then screw or glue them to the metal rim of the case. Then lightly glue the metal side on using a weak glue; like hot glue.

3GB isn't future proof sure, but it should do fine on most games at 1080p and below resolutions, and right now is not the time to buy a "future proof" card, what with graphics card prices being where they are, with Volta right around the corner (and the slim possibility that the mythical primitive shader drivers the AMD unpaid shills keep talking about somehow make Vega git gud).
Facy is the 6GB is not good value at all above 300$ and the 1050ti is 30% more expensive than the 1050 with barely a 15% performance difference. And of course AMD cards are shit out of wack right now. A Zotac 1060 3GB for 200 is exactly what the doctor ordered for the average poorfag right now.

I was reading this post when I thought forcing the case closed, since the fractal 1000 and 1100 (one I have) are virtually the same. But when I started pressing it closed it bows a lot more than in their pictures. Which is really weird because the width is the same and so is the cooler clearance.

Hey can someone give me some tips on something I’m buying for my first computer (like if there is a cheaper processor that will do Essentially the same thing as a more expensive one) I’ve done my research and this is my current build

Case:nzxt s340 elite
PSU: evga 500w bronze
RAM: 8g of ddr4(2sticks)
GPU: 1080ti (not sure if I should get a blower style or not)
CPU: Intel 7700k
MOBO: Asia dog Maximus 9

All I want to be able to do is hangout in a discord with some friends and play some games on it, I might do some light video and sound editing and I want to know if I went overkill with it
>>
>>62417504
Sell it and get a 1080 or 1080ti.
Vega 56 is stupidly overpriced.
>>
>>62417534

>>
>>62417556
No need for the 1080ti the 7700k has powerful integrated graphics.
>>
>>62417556
Fuck's sake with that sort of build you might as well get a better PSU than a 500w bronze piece of crap. Don't expect to get any sort of good overclocking from that thing (and overclocking is the whole point of the K series). 80+ Bronze means it will only actually output 425 at peak load, so with that 1080ti and 7700k you're right on the edge, which isn't recommended. And have you even picked a CPU heatshink? The K doesn't come with any.

And if all you're doing is "discord and some games and video editing" and you don't even have a 144hz monitor, yes it's MASSIVE overkill and should be replaced with a 1070 and a Ryzen 5. Oh and definitely throw in 16GB of memory instead.
Have you considered storage?
Also use PC Part Picker.

>>
>>62417556
What games? For a 1080ti you better be doing 1440p@144hz monitor or 2160p@60hz.
If you have 1080p@144hz or 1440p@60hz get a 1070.
Also get a more powerful PSU and 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM
>>

Would also be out of place in my 2 year old entry grade pc, but the only thing that I feel that my system lacks is graphical power.

Night and day.
It was storage, not processing power, that has held back user experience. You could build a computer with a Celeron and SSD today and it would "feel" faster than an i7 with a HDD.

is there anything more infuriating than when a family member has a fucking prebuilt pc with those annoying 5in bays that ratch up out of the way and a fucking HDD mount that requires you to unscrew 4 other things to gain access too and a fucking old ass BIOS that doesnt natively just boot from USB for installing windows 10

i literally just went to pcpartpicker and spent $100 to get them a real PC and will give them my G4600 that i just swapped out for my 7700T

Like the other guy, it really was night and day for me as well. I went from some seagate HDD (I think) to a cheap Sandisk 120GB Plus SSD and was absolutely blown away by how fast games like CK2 loaded. It died on me like 5 or 6 months after buying it though, so deffo try to go for a Samsung or Kingston SSD.
>>
>>62418703

with that being said, Windows 10 improves HDD performance exponentially over every major linux version, i know this from experience

I used to think my HDD was dying or something, especially when downloading heavily, everything would chug

I eventually switched to SSD tho and just got a 1TB for my games

>>62418681

don't get the 3GB version, just in GTA5 alone which is now about to be 3 years old on PC (but really a 2013 game) needs more than 3 for stuff that matters at 1080p
>>
>>62418763
VRAM doesn't matter as long as you have backup RAM to support it. I've 2GB of VRAM and whenever I run out my PC automatically uses my 32GB of regular RAM.
>>

>>62418719

>>
>>62418797
VRAM matters for stuff like texture. Unless you think offloading textures to RAM is a good idea, then simply gets used to popins and stuff looking untextured for 1-2 seconds whenever you look at them.

>>
>>62418797

even with everything turned off or to as low as possible in GTA5 its still almost 2GB of ram

bottom line the 1060 6GB is noticably cheaper than the 2-3 cards faster than it, its a literal 2x price jump to the 1070

if I had gone with the 1050ti or 1060 3GB because of everyone spouting the 1080 only needs 2GB meme would have been massively upset

I'm chopping up an ATX power supply to connect it to a 3D printer, and I figured you guys would be the ones to ask about this.

>>
>>62419405
Not much benefits. I usually hear that storing games on SSD is better

Really depends. For games that frequently load huge files (Fallout 4 most notably) you will see dramatic improvement. For open-world games with no loading zones etc you will only get startup time improvement.
>>
>>62419248
I'd say go down to the 1600 and if you're worried about overheating you can also just go for a cryorig or noctua as they are both very good cpu coolers. As for gpu get one with two or three fans to avoid heat issues.
>>
>>62419272
If you're doing 1080p gaming get a 480/580 with a cheap freesync monitor.
>>
>>62419405
no. If your games are on your HDD, you won't see any improvements. However, if you play a bunch of AAA games, an SSD won't cut it unless you micromanage your installations. The best thing you can do price/performance-wise is get a 250gb SSD and an HDD and store loose (pirated, GOG, etc.) games (installers or isos and shit) on the HDD, then when you want to play them, install them on the SSD, and once you finish, back up the saves and uninstall them to clear space for other games. As for steam games, just install and uninstall as you please and let Steam's save backup shit take care of it.
>>

Gaming, although I bought a PS4 to minimize usage of Windows. There's some games I either can't or I' unwilling to play on consoles. Other than that I shitpost, watch cute girl cartoons and write My Diary Desu. If it weren't for not wanting to let go of PC gaming entirely, I would be spending much less a new computer or just continuing to use my old one.
The most demanding things it's going to do is Doom 2016, Minecraft with crazy mods and Dwarf Fortress. other than that my computing needs are pretty minimal.

>>62419465

I do. I'm in no rush to upgrade to 4K. Especially the case since I have two monitors it would bother me if one was higher-res than the other.it wouldn't be so bad since I'm an I3 user butit would bother me all the same. This is from someone who's slightly annoyed that both his monitors are different models.

Definitely not going for anything more expensive than a 1060. The GPU is definitely the shortest-lived component in a gaming PC. With the crypto mining craze I was almost prepared to settle for a 1050 ti. GPU prices look acceptable now. I just hope it keeps up through the holiday season.

Speccy done. the GPU is temp once again til the gpu shitstorm blows over.

Having an issue though. I went away from the comp for 2 hours to take care of some farm chores and came back to the comp turned off. When trying to turn on, the comp seemed turned on but nothing on the monitor. Switching motherboard and gpu connections did nothing.

So I forced a shut down (5 second push dealio), tried to turn back on and same thing happened with nothing on monitor. Noticed when forced shutdown or turned on, power light on case was blinking.

Looked up something on net, decided to unplug, wait awhile, plug back in, and it turned on normally, somewhat. From a cold boot the comp seems to post, restart after a few seconds, post, then gets to the asrock's bios/etc. options screen (F2, f11, etc. options) then starts normally.

As of this posting for past hour, comp hasn't turned off or anything, and disabled sleep if that might'ave effected anything.

How efficient are power supplies under very low load? High usage stuff like gaming is probably only 1/4 of what I use my computer for. I'm seriously considering buying an 80 Plus Titanium PSU because it requires 90% efficiency at 10% usage, whereas none of the other rating have any requirements for 10% usage. Are they normally pretty good, or would it be worth springing for it?

Also, Ryzen stock coolers are pretty good. you can get to a 3.5 clock on a stock cooler, and that's conservative. If your not overclocking, then the stock one is fine. If your doing some heavy overclocking, like 4.0, pick up a Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4.

You're fine with that case honestly. With the way the case industry is, you either go cheap (<$100) or super premium (>$200) with nothing really in between. The Evolv ATX looks good for ATX. For a practical portable build though, you're going to have to rethink your whole build.

Intel still beats Ryzen, but the gap has been closed so much that they're crapping themselves trying to deal with it without lowering prices. Intel has been better than AMD for so long that they've just been coasting, and now that AMD has caught up, Intel is actually having to try to compete. So, yeah, if price or core count at all factors into your build, AMD. If single-core performance is the only thing you care about, cost be damned, Intel is still king.

PC tends to not start sometimes. Gets to BIOS or not even before that when it hits a black screen and doesn't do anything else.

Fans spinning, lights on, etc.

Tilt it forward a bit and it works. This happens on and off and it's starting to happen again. I always clean it out monthly and keep shit fastened.

I'm using an SSD as a boot drive and that doesn't seem to be the issue. My PSU cables are quite short and I've had to force a few round some corners to make the case sides go back on.

>Do you know what "refurbished" means? Used.
Refurbished means that it's actually been tested and fixed in case something is wrong with it, you're not just buying it off some random idiot off the street. You still haven't presented a single argumeny for why buying used is a problem.
>The Ivy Bridge i5 has better performance than a G4560, but not by that much. Akin to buying an R3 1200.
And how much does it cost to buy a G4560 system? At least 500 bucks, and how much does buying a used enterprice machine cost? $100 bucks for the PC itself, then add a GPU and maybe a PSU. The G4560 literally serves no purpose when you can get a Ryzen 1200 system for the same price.
>I'd rather have the option for a 7700 over a 3770.
Good for you, I'd rather have the option to save my shekels and buy whatever Zen CPU I want up until 2020 since you can just reuse the GPU and PSU you put in the used machine and you're only out $100 to get better performance compared to a G4560 build.
>Pretty sure the refurbished Dell should have an IGP as well.
I'm talking about the G4560 compared to the 1200. The G4560 isn't a "poverty tier" CPU if you're going to add a GPU since you can build a Ryzen 1200 machine for the exact same price and actually have an upgrade path available. You only buy the G4560 if you're not going to use a GPU since Ryzen doesn't have a iGPU.
>Not everyone has the time and patience to tinker.
We're in a thread about building your own PC, that's exactly the kind of time and patience they have.

>There are plenty of prebuilt machines that are new that can be found at great prices
Alright, please show me one of these machines that can be found for $100 bucks, or $300 if you're going to add a 1050 Ti and PSU to it.

Why are you here? Just buy a fucking pre-built if you're going to make retarded arguments
>>
just got myself new ssd and i found nvme drivers for it. do i need to switch to ahci or is that nvme driver enough and i can leave bios alone? my first ssd
>>
How does a phenom II x6 hold up these days? Still decent for games or utter garbage?
>>
Just found out I've been supplying a r9 290 on a molex to 6pin + molex to 6+2pin for years now
They are connect to the same main cable
>>
>>62423605
garbage for modern games. Best bang for the buck right now is an AMD Ryzen 5 1600
>>
>>62423549
Is your SSD an m.2 or a 2.5"?
NVMe is only for m.2
>>
>>62423719
i got samsung 850evo.

i thought i wont need any drivers but windows rates it 5.9 which is exactly the same as my previous 7 years old hdd full of errors so something isnt right
>>
>>62415852
What prebuilt machine can be had for $300 with a 1050Ti in it? Are you retarded? A used Dell Optiplex costs $100, a 1050Ti costs $150-160 and a PSU costs $30-40
>>
Do I buy a GTX 1070 right now?
Using a old GTX 570, can barely play games at very low.
>>
>>62423873

Chances are your ass plays at 1080p, get a 1050ti or a 1060

the 950 evo is available both as an m.2 or a 2.5" form factor. Just telling me it's an 850 evo tells me nothing.
Either way, I'd probably say no. nmve is a standard that has to be built into the SSD and it can only be used by m.2 SSDs.

And so you don't get confused. The top SSD in this picture is a 2.5" SSD which connects to the motherboard via a Sata cable.
The Bottom SSD is an m.2 SSD that plugs directly into the motherboard.

2.5" then

why is my ssd so badly rated by my pc? it makes me thing something horribly wrong and i wasted shitload of money

ignore it. The 850 Evo is a good SSD.
The best SSDs at the moment are the Samsung 850 Evo, Sandisk Ultra II, and the Crucial MX300, so as long as it's one of those and at least 240 GB, you're good.

thanks for the help. i just this very moment updated to sp1 and suddenly its max rating so all is good. no need to tinker with anything. i guess service pack contained some upgrades that include how ssd operates with the system.
