If you have a home edition of a desktop operating system why can't you spare 5-10 minutes restarting your computer every couple of weeks? If your uptime is that critical you should really be running a server operating system, or at least an enterprise edition.

And it would never force me to update. I could keep hitting delay 4 hours forever if I wanted to. Meanwhile windows 10 will restart regardless of what you're doing and won't let you delay forever.

Even then if I delay 4 hours right before I go to bed the computer will go off in my sleep. Unlike windows 10 which needs special fancy hours to do this for some fucking reason

Windows 7 and 8 never had this problem. I've never seen more b itching about restarting for updates ever than from windows 10

>Windows 7 and 8 never had this problem
You can keep telling yourself this, but nagging updates was a staple in Windows 7. Sorry you're too young to remember.
And the active hours is so that it can update & restart without interrupting you, ie in your sleep, so you can get back to using it.
Then you can set a special restart time too, and disable notifications for updates.

tl;dr, there's more options now to actually have your system constantly updated without even knowing it's updating, but SOMEHOW y'all niggers still find a way to fuck that up

This is dogshit I've never had to do this much trouble shooting for something so simple it should have been there in the first place

Calling these monotonous edits and changes far beyond normal function is anything but. It's afunctionality.

Your entire hatred stems from an irrational fear of restarting your computer, is your uptime number that important to you? Having to change the registry is such a stupid jury rigged work around that trying to substitute that for the simplicity of hitting one button on windows 10 are not comparable on anyway

Windows' primary audience is normalfags, and normalfags need updates to be forced on them or you get a repeat of time when it was daily news for some new worm using an exploit that was fixed in an update several months ago to tear through millions of computers. If you're not a braindead normalfag, it is very easy for you to configure the update system, the options are simply hidden just deep enough for normalfags to be scared off and decide it's "too much effort". Case in point, the retarded OP.

>>62412058

There's a reason Windows gained a reputation for being insecure, and it's because retards never installed updates and then laid the blame with MS when they got raped by some ancient exploit that was patched before the malware was even created.

Two of the most famous worms from the 2000s, sasser/blaster, exploited vulnerabilities that had already been patched by time they were released into the wild. More recently you have things like Wanacry which, again, utilised exploits that anyone running up to date versions of Windows would not have been affected by.

You're either very young or just ignorant.
>>
>>62411327
I've had next to 0 disk space for a while now and every time Windows tries to update it opens a box like that which is completely unclickoffable unless you hit more info, which brings up a new window for the updates page, which you then have to close.

It does this twice a day, and almost always when I'm in the middle of something. Recently all my icons went to the default blank white page icon, I'm almost certain it's to get me to free up space and download their botnet.

An OS should manage and govern access to the hardware.
It should have a user which is in charge of selecting which applications to run and that user should also be the one to stop those applications.
An OS should never stop a running application unless some error occurs.
The acceptable way to do updates would to give the user instructions to shut down the computer and then just assume it would get done at some point.
If it is really important they do so, disable the option to sleep the system, then offer a way to restart the computer similar to what KDE does so you restart the applications when you bring the computer back on.

When I was running windows I disabled updates entirely because of the nagging.

Now I run linux. It doesn't nag me. I update when I feel like it, and I get to selectively choose what updates I want. The updates are even given priority levels so I know what's been tested thoroughly and what hasn't. When I do update, it takes about 30 seconds and doesn't require restarting anything or interrupting what I'm doing.

Linux is, in every single way, better than microsoft when it comes to updates and I fully encourage anyone annoyed by Windows behaviour to give linux a try - download rufus, download a live-usb linux .iso, plug in a usb, mount the .iso onto your usb and then reboot, go into your bios to change boot priority to usb, and boot from your usb instead of your hard drive.

It is very easy, and very safe. You boot and run off the usb.

If you saw a machine that hadn't been rebooted in 1.5 years you should be afraid, because the longer it stays up the longer the chance of it not coming back if it does indeed need a reboot.

Hell, once a year my datacenter has a defined outage where we reboot our core switches and all other networking and server equipment that normally doesn't.

you're the one who always has unspecified video issues with tearing too aren't you? the one who never replies when people try to help?
>>
>>62417894
You aren't impressing anyone. Those embedded devices are the exact ones that makes stuff like regin so easy.

Not even to mention there is a reason you build primary and secondary systems, for the exact reason of taking one down at a time.

Stay in school.
>>
>>62418162
>embedded
That's a pretty broad generalization. Embedded means you're too much of a brainlet to undertstand in this case.

You're just some server-racker with a fancy job description, probably you call yourself an engineer but you didn't even pass a PE exam of any kind.

Apprentice in the phone company and learn what uptime is and how to operate a service.

Ok, shill. Microsoft even had to do some massive backpedaling when their grand scheme backfired.

Sorry, punching down cables is help desk tier work.

Stay in school. It's funny how you went straight to specialized devices which can be hacked in seconds and aren't patched because no one will touch them anymore for fear of fucking it up.

Considering phone companies are constantly expanding software defined networking, your movement of the goalposts only goes so far.

never had any issues with video tearing, also since when was making up silly claims about people known as "help"? (pic related)
>>

You need to be an engineer to apprentice with the backbone people brainlet.

We can't have kids like you going near stuff that actual people rely on.
>>
>>62418415
>>what tv card anon? it has them all
>it doesnt
So in other words this is a hypothetical edge-case scenario and you're too lazy to try to find a current list of video cards which are confirmed not to work in Linux.

Why are you shills so lazy? It makes Windows look even worse you know.

Best distro that "just werks"?
>>
>>62418886
Mint

If the arch hipsters convince you otherwise, then go with ubuntu or debian, but mint is about as "it just werks" as you can get with linux.

Once you've got everything riced up you'll wonder why you even put up with windows
>>
Why do you still need to restart for updates in 2017?

Much more accurately, yfw https://youtu.be/hfiewTiKAfU?t=1181
If you code or you want a less botnetty OS, get Linux, but don't expect it to obviate Windows' niche because that's an absolute pipe dream. For stuff that works best with Windows, you'll want to keep a Windows machine or partition around.

>>

I play video games just fine on Linux. If they don't have native Linux support they work through wine like 95% of the time, for me.

Because of so many normalfags falling for the don't update your wondous xd meme and getting ransomwared, ms is just trying to stay safe and force normal cunt homeusers to not make them look bad
You do realize you can easily turn off most of not all of telemtry and forced update bs via gpedit on win10 pro and enterprise, do you even consider yourself a /g/entleman if you havent done that already?

drivers, video editors, games, etc...

Drivers are fine outside of gaming. So I see only video editors need to use windows then? Because most games run fine in wine and so does adobe actually
>>

Wine is far from an easy solution for a lot of things
my laptop touchpad doesn't work, my desktop soundcard doesn't work properly
a lot of the SDL ports of games are low quality too with worse performance compared to the Windows versions(literally can't even alt-tab out of them)

there are too many problems
