To run the script, simply need to run

If your HTML bookmarks were generated by Firefox, then it should work. It doesn't require that Firefox be currently on your computer.

Should I go with Debian or Arch if I want to learn more about technology while also having a """secure""" system? I'm tired of my ISP logging everything I do and every page I look at. I feel like Arch will force me to learn more things than Debian would in that regard. I want to evolve beyond being a brainlet.
>>
>>62395951
The basic Arch installation isn't security-oriented. To the degree that it is, it's only about firewalls, encryption, and some other things, all of which are optional as hell. I doubt Debian is much different in that regard.

It's always good to learn more about how Linux, the shell, and filesystems work, but you're not going to get out-of-the-box security from many distros except those fully focused on those issues.

>Linux user for the first time
>Arch Linux
>Oh.. wow, I actually gotta install everything from the beginning of partitions, to packages, networks, etc;
Well, this was certainly a very welcoming and different first experience. I'm sure many would've recommended to go with a "more friendly" distribution but I guess I gotta learn one way or another, anyway.
At this point I managed to install everything from drivers, set up wifi, organizing folders, installing appropriate packages.. your basic daily needs that it actually feels very nice to use.

I do admit, every LITTLE problem that I came across made me open 3 more tabs on my browser just to research spending hours and find an answer to realize I needed /something else/ as well. Don't even get me started on learning to use these new applications I'm unfamiliar with. Everything is so by-the-keyboard unlike Windows. But, somehow I pulled through.

Now I realize a lot of apps I took for granted I had to actually find new ones with the proper settings I wanted. The wiki is an endless fountain of knowledge and very helpful to me.

I'm sure there's a lot more to know.

Oh, so you don't need to backup everytime?

I'm guessing if I select the same option from the installer, it won't touch the /home directory/partition.

But what if I run out of space? Just expand or something?

>can have up2date packages on other distros
Other distros like Ubuntu tend to have very old, out of date packages in the repositories. While you technically can install newer packages, it requires you to go searching online for random PPAs, and then the system ends up being buggy and unstable because you have newer software with older dependencies. This is just a breeze on Arch.

>can build packages on other distros
Sure, but it's faster and easier on Arch.

>can read the arch wiki while using other distros
Sure, but the Arch wiki is most relevant to Arch. Other distros can do things differently and the Arch wiki won't always apply exactly.

The wiki usually expressly states so, and you can see where those differences exist (i.e. configs). If you're following the arch wiki step-by-step, you're doing it wrong.

Why doesn't linux gracefully handle changing the username or localhost name?

I can't just simply change them, I have to change a bunch of files they get referenced in. This strikes me as incredibly bizarre and unintuitive.

It should be painless to change your localhost and username without ripping the entrails out of your installation.

Mint is the memest meme distro ever.
People install it because its #1 distro on distrowatch, without knowing that Mint gained that popularity by actually getting cracked by some script kids (search the web for " backdoored linux mint isos" ).

"linux blogs" fall for it and repost how cool it is, but the only cool thing, newfriends may enjoy, is cinnamon, which is a DE, which works on any distro.

Assuming you're not joking and mean something like zeroing out the data then the best way to do it is the simplest.
There is literally an "attribute" you can set on files in some filesystems which will make it so any time that file gets deleted by any means it will automatically be zeroed out on the disk.

Unfortunately ext4 doesn't have it (although there is a patch). I'm under the impression it's _supposed to be_ implemented in all filesystems but some just don't.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I mean, agree with Bryan's sentiment almost wholeheartedly on this one, which is really seldom for me, nowadays, but he definitely needs more structure in this one. But I'm glad that he was so harsh towards these people, while still maintaining an astonishing amount of professionalism. In a way, I think his restrained-ness really accentuates how pervasively fucked up and hypocritical so many public figures in the free software world are. It's a really fucked up situation, and Lunduke otherwise handled it well. To bad he's too fucking lazy to write an outline before make his stupid thinkpieces.

So in Windows-land there's a useful piece of searching software called Everything. Its a simple GUI application that maintains an index of directories you specify and lets you type in a box and immediately get a list of search results displayed. It doesn't bother searching file contents, or on anything but the filename.

I remember hearing that there was a very similar application for unix-like systems, but I have no idea what it was called, does someone know what I'm talking about? None of the things in the Arch wiki's list of file-finders seem to be what I'm thinking of.

i was told basically that the infrastructure consists of an OS and a server, and was given linux and apache as an open source example. are there any other examples of those or are they the only ones?

Seems like openSUSE has Nvidia drivers now? Should I switch all my machines from Fedora 26 to Tumbleweed?

Reading on X11, jesus, there are so many treasures hidden!
>x[tab][tab] gives a nice preview of installed X programs
Hacking on X is pretty easy too, removing window decorations, setting transparency, etc.
Why didn't anyone tell me how cool X actually is.

as someone who is new to linux, i see alot of people recommending Void. What sets it apart from linux mint and arch? what are its pro's and con's
>>
>>62406392
No systemd, pretty nice installer, just werks
However, it lacks packages and many packages are outdated
Void is great if you don't mind compiling many programs yourself

Im running a budget build for a Gaming/Linux machine, and i was wondering if i can expect WINE to be resource intensive. most serious thing i plan to run on it would be Star Citizen
>>
>>62406457
Just dual boot or use a VM with GPU passthrough
WINE doesn't work that well for modern, demanding games
>>
>>62406548
For the GPU passthrough would i need a spare SSD or could i use the one im booting my system off of
>>
ok guys, gotta myself a t440p using manjaro for a while and thinking about going to antegeros...
I don't use PURE arch because i am to retarded to install it (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
question is: what is the best way to backup all my software and settings? Like is there any way to create a script so that if i am on antegeros, i just start it and all my beloved apps are back and i only need to copy my backupsettings back?
>>
>>62406610
Why would you need it?
>>
>>62406677
I assumed to boot up windows through it, a guide i looked at recommended it, im brand new to linux, and have 0 idea what im doing. but with each passing moment my seething rage against the botnet grows, and i also dont want to give Microsoft my shekels.
>>
>>62406610
Nope, why would you need it?
But you need a 2nd GPU
And you should use an AMD card for GPU passthrough as nvidia has blocked it on their consumer cards
You can get nvidia cards to work, but its a hassle
>>
>>62399039
Only if you can also use Libreboot.
