If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN P, T, X, and W SERIES if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended IBM models:
X60, X61, T60, T61, 860, Transnote, PC110

Recommended old models:
X200, W500

Recommended modern models:
X220 - 12", 768x1366, cheap and light
T420 - normal size, 14", 900x1600
T520 - 15", 1080p, Quadcore-CPUs
W520 - desktop replacement, 15", USB 3.0

Last good models:
X230 - 12", USB 3.0, IPS option avaiable, classic keyboard installable
T440p - 14", last ThinkPad to have replacable CPUs, 1080p IPS displays avaiable
----
Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Function first, cute later.

Completely Official /tpg/ T440p buyer's guide

CPU - i3 dual, i5 dual, i7 dual, i7 quad. Middle is pointless, latter is marked with MQ. I've never seen an i3. Easy to swap. Most commmon ones - i5 4200m, i5 4300m, i7 4700mq. Best upgrade is either a 4712mq for equivalent wattage to the dual cores or 4710/4810/4910 for higher clocks, depending on which one you can find for cheap. Only big difference between those is clocks, 4700/4800/4900 work fine as well. Note - haven't actually seen proof of a 4712 working, it's not on the official compatibility list but it should work.

RAM - PC3-12800 1600MHZ DDR3, two slots, both swappable. 16GB max, pretty sure that's a Haswell limit.

Storage - one internal SATA 2.5 bay, one internal M.2 2242 SSD slot, optional one 2.5 drive in the DVD """"UltraBay"""" drive bay. It might not be clear where the drives in the one you're buying are, ask if you want to know.

Screen - 766p/900p TN, 1080p IPS. 1080 swap is cheap, not a big deal. B140HAN01.1, .2 or .3 are recommended. IIRC it's matte/glossy/semi-matte in that order.

Battery - 6cell or 9cell, later has a rear bulge. Worth it.

Trackpad - if you want the classic style, swap it for the T450 one. Just remove the backplate (2 screws), the palmrest (7 or 8 screws) and replace the touchpad (4 screws) which is a component of the palmrest. Reassemble and done.

Keyboard - modern Lenovo chiclet, can't be swapped unlike xx30 series. By chiclet standards it's pretty damn good though.

GPU - GT730M. Pretty much pointless, I'd avoid it. Can't be swapped without swapping the motherboard.

Extra - GPU model has a different heatsink, it keeps it a tiiiiiny bit cooler. Few degrees, but if you're right on the edge of throttling after a quad core swap it might be worth a shot.

Any suggestions?

48** and higher processors have higher igpu clocks, making it marginally better

can use an msata drive too with a little $3 adapter and cutting the adapter in half (i'm doing this shit with an spare msata ssd i had)

DDR3L (1.35v)
>palmrest (7 or 8 screws)
11 screws (some are hidden under the battery), you also need to remove the keyboard to disconnect the touchpad cable

I've just bought a refurbished T420 and it looks almost brand new. Clean, no cracks, no rust, only a few scrapes.

But I'm kinda confused by the temperatures. It idles at around 35 - 40 °C, doing basic stuff gets it to about 45, browsing gets it to 50 - 60 depending on what I'm doing, and under heavy loads which push the CPU to the limit, it reports 80 °C. Stress testing (Prime95) got it to 90 °C.

The really weird thing is, it can jump from 40 to 80 in 2 seconds, almost immediately after starting a demanding process. It also jumps down to almost idle temps immediately after stopping the work. To top it off, even when it's showing 80 °C, the exhaust blows only warm air.

Is this normal?

>>62392168
I'm actually using Debian on it. It came with Win 10 preinstalled, and that's when I did the Prime95 test (measured the 90 °C using Speccy). The other readings are under Debian (Xfce) using xfce4-sensors.
>>
>>62392254
what do you use your t420 for? Mines basically a fresh install of debian and all I do is use it as a 4chan machine so it never gets hotter than 40'c

Back when it had win10 though it used to melt when I did anything at all

>>
>>62392108
open it and put new thermal paste on it.

Also clean the fan from the inside to make sure it is clean
>>
>>62392300
Well I use it as an everything machine. If I'm only on 4chan, it does stay at about 40 - 45, but 1080p 60fps videos take it to the 60 range, and upgrading all of the CPAN modules has it periodically peak at 70-ish.
>>

You can get one stock with 1080 IPS, it's worth keeping an eye out. The colors aren't the best if you actually need color accuracy though.

Also, swapping the CPU on this is faster and easier than swapping the screen, or even the trackpad. Weird design.

That's a 2720qm 45w one, you won't reach 45w unless it's at full load on all cores and you can throttle the TDP anyway.

I use it for browsing, use it as a remote terminal for SSH, doing a bit of coding, watching videos with youtube-dl and mplayer, running games in emulators, ham radio applications, etc.

With the SSD it's quite fast enough for all of the above. Heck I even throttle it to 900MHz on battery with TLP to save juice, and it runs so cool that it almost never turns the fans on.

As the ME attacks make it into the wild it will be very handy to have.

I don't hate it but here is the reasons why the older keyboard is better, hence the older ThinkPads are better.
>red
The best functional arrow key setup on any keyboard in existence. Having the Forward and Backwards buttons makes using your file browser so much easier, and using your web browser as well. sometimes Backspace won't work and won't be recognised. Also if you press the Fn key, the arrows become media player controls. This is extremely nice when you Alt-Tab into your music player the Fn-Arrow key to do whatever you need to do.
The new keyboard has none of this.
>blue
Personally I think the x200/201 setup is the best because it has NO trackpad. Honestly what sets ThinkPads apart from other computers is the TrackPoint, so might as well get rid of that trackpad. Also the left/right buttons are raised so that you can really feel the difference between them.
>yellow
Along with media controls with the Fn+Arrow keys, you have actual physical volume controls. If you're in the dark or can't look at your screen, you can still mute or change the volume almost instantly just by feel. That's almost impossible to do with the new keyboard without at least glancing.
>green
ANSI enter key just works better. It's closer to your pinky finger. New ThinkPads at least have this.

I was looking into purchasing these for the nonprofit I work for, but the screens are just too shitty. They won't work with the database app that everyone uses.

I ordered a Lenovo Yoga 720 for a coworker that kept pushing me to order it. It arrived from Amazon, curled like a potato chip from rough handling.

Everybody there wants macbook clones but they don't realize how fragile the things are, and these are clumsy people.

You don't 'need' to but you might find it beneficial. Windows Update is supposed to get the right drivers but sometimes it doesn't. I always just use Lenovo's System Update tool for drivers and software and junk, you can simply uncheck the things you don't want to install.

You could also install the Lenovo Settings App that shows you a little more information and gives access to a few more settings.

Found a T60 in the trash in pretty good condition. Spent about 30 bucks today buying little upgrades here and there on feebay.

So far.

bought T7400 cpu, t7600 was 15 dollars more!
SSD drive i had laying around
bought 4gb of memory even though only 3gb can be used due to chipset.
bought 9 cell batteries
bought new cmos battery

it has intel gma video and was wondering about installing libreboot but turns out it depends on the panel and that sometimes it wont work and will leave your laptop headless or even bricked, which would then require buying a bus pirate and reflashing it again which is another adventure in itself and an additional 30 dollars in hardware.

should i just not install libreboot? also what distro should i use? this isn't my first time using linux but i really want a throw around laptop and this will be it. I don't want bloated crap. I want something that i can learn on, so it doesn't have to be easy to use.

which distro would that be?

When you get it make sure to make a post on /tpg/ and provide screenshots of battery info from hwinfo64 and document it's wear levels. I am curious how it will hold up. Usually you're fine if you don't exceed 3% wear after 30 cycles.

Hi /tpg/, laptop noob here, starting compsci uni this year and looking for a nice work/fun laptop.

>budget up to €500
>expect to spend most time on my laptop outside of home
>don't mind carrying some weight
>A larger screen might be useful for coding (?)
>don't play vidya much but would enjoy some twitch streams or maybe a movie (even if the screen quality is bad).

I guess I'm looking for a mobile workstation and would like the most comfort I can get when it's all set up, with maybe some entertainment capabilities. From the guide it seems I should be looking at the T420/T440p, T520 or W520 with the X's probably too small. But I'm having a hard time narrowing things down from the recommended laptops.

Can any compsci student or software engineer recommend any of these over the others, given that budget shouldn't be a problem? Or perhaps tell me what criterium would help me make a decision?

Good stuff. Yeah, well I don't know much about optimus other than it turns off the dGPU under normal usage so you don't have to suffer it's higher power draw. Maybe that's all you need to know from a consumer stand point though.

For anyone that would like to help:
Yesterday my T530 died all of a sudden. It seems to give me a sharp sound whenever I plug in the adapter, but it also does not register the battery as existing either. (No status lights at all).
I took the keybaord+bezel out and nothing visible appears to be fucked.
Any idea if replacing the power port might fix it, or is the mobo fucked?

Yep. Motherboard swap is required these days, and half the time the RAM/storage is soldered on too.

If you want a fast laptop for cheap, buy a T440P/T430/T420 and swap a quad core into it. Anything past that, you're stuffed.

>>
>>62408059
well, depends on how deep you want to go to fix it. If it's a fucked diode or voltage regulator or something, it can be fixed by soldering but you'd need to do some measuring first. I can't find any good closeups with after some googling so I can't really tell what to measure for now. Motherboards seem to be relatively inexpensive so you could also just replace it.
Replacing the power port isn't going to do anything probably, but you could test if it has some weird short circuit by just unplugging and trying it off the battery (or again, measuring resistance between both positive and negative pins).

As for the adapter, the port is just the circle with a single pin so I don't know exactly what to do with that. I've tried other adapters, so it's not the brick itself.
As for the components, I took out the ram, put it back in, put the battery back in, reconnected the keyboard, and it still didn't power on. Are you suggesting I remove and reconnect the CMOS battery and see if that helps?

I appreciate the help, by the way.

Hello /tpg/. From this rather long thread on W520's http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/lenovo-w520-owners-thread.566338/ i have gathered that in case one is interested in the upper spec range of the T520, then it's almost always better to switch to the W520 for a laptop and a better deal.

Can anybody here confirm this as a general rule? I'm worried that I might be overlooking something important, as I have gotten the same impression.
>>
>>62408488
What kind of specs? If you're looking for a quad core, I'm pretty sure both of those have swappable CPUs.
>>
>>62394558
How can I buy this?
>>
>>62408483
Okay so no input diodes in sight and nothing obviously broken. Can you look for a component in the neighborhood of the power input with the label starting with D? If you do, set your multimeter to diode mode and measure it (one side to the other and vice versa). If it's okay, then I have no idea. My electrical knowledge is still pretty limited.
Yeah try removing the cmos battery for some time and see what happens. Probably not the problem but worth a shot.
It kinda sucks there are no schematics of these laptops to be found online, would make life a bit easier...

Most of the motherboard is still covered by the "rollcage" so I can't see anything, and yeah, nothing labeled D in sight.
I unplugged the CMOS for a minute and tried it again. Should I wait longer?

>>62408640
Should be okay. I don't know the t530 that well, can you also reseat the cpu? Probably a lot of work but, if it's possible, worth the try.

>>62408547
Yes they both have swappable CPU's, and as for specs let's say quad i7 (upper range T520). I know that the W520 has 4 dimms so it can store a bit more memory, and that its quadro gpu is a little bit better than those in the T series, although I won't use that much. They seem otherwise identical, and so my question basically becomes
>any reason to get maxed out T520 over W520?
I'm having a hard time choosing between the various high-end T's and the W520
>>
>>62408677
Yeah, I have easy access to the CPU, but that seems like a lot of work for something that is probably not the issue. I have a real hunch that it's something with the power.
>>
>>62408699
I blew a fuse on a computer's psu once by incorrectly seating a cpu so it's possible to create a short there. But yeah, unlikely.
>>
>>62408693
I think the W has nicer screens.
>>
>>62408727
So I've heard as well. Everything seems to go in the W520's favor, so I guess I have my answer. Thanks.
>>
So I'm the same person with a ded T530. Do the T/W520's and the W530's use the same screen/memory as the T530?
I have the 1920x1080 screen and 8GB of memory which would be a shame to go to waste if I get a replacement.
