If the outcomes are in flux so that the answer of a question is not decided until you find the answer, then p might be equal to np.

Long story short:
There are many NP-problems where the elite of computer science tried for ages to find "fast solutions" (which would indicate the problems lies within P). Even with funky math haxx0ry and generations of great and tricky algorithms it was pretty clear, that nobody will find a solution quicker than that.
If you really get into the details, you will understand. We did a lot of algorithms for KNAPSACK in university, and even though they are very sophisticated, they will never be polynomial. Just try it, I can't explain it very well.
