Apple offered them a few workarounds to access the data but REFUSED to actually create software so they could access the phone. i haven't dug into other phones from these companies, but my sense was that these were flagship phones that were released in the last 4 years, giving the manufacturers enough lead time to develop a reputation of supporting their devices for 3 full years.

i can run custom ROMs, but this shouldn't be one of those things that i have to take into my own hands to avoid falling behind in stability updates and security patches. i shouldn't have to wait 5+ months for my manufacturer to get a major software update from google to my device. if this were patching a vulnerability, that'd be 5+ months of being exposed with a publicly disclosed vulnerability. that's insane.
