After having a smart phone for a good while, I think I've come the conclusion that I Android AND iOS are both complete shit. I'm ready to make the switch. Is there any thing to look for in a dumb phone?
>>
Just give up cellphones altogether
>>
>>62364261
I tried this.
It is retarded.
Still having signal/telegram to be in contact with important persons is nice.
also for train times n shit.
Just get a new number, tell nobody and just hand it to important people. This did the trick for me.
Also do not install any unnessesary bloat
>>
>>62364272
Not ideal with wife and baby :/
>>
>>62364291
>Just get a new number, tell nobody and just hand it to important people.
And that's how I ended up with an empty contact list.
>>

>>
>>62364261
Kyocera makes an awesome basic phone. I recently got rid of my android for a kyocera flip phone. Battery lasts 2 weeks on a charge :D
>>
>>62364261
Switching to dumbphones works when you have nothing going on in your life
Try running a business these days without a smartphone, it's damn near impossible and every time you're away from emails and group voice calls is money lost
>>
>>62365045
I use a Nokia 101 mainly to deter myself from distractions and normally I get online at night, check mails, messenger and whatnot and it works well.
I'm a university student tho, will getting a decent job put some breaks on this idea?

Yes. Suppose you're a member of a project and someone sends you an email about it and needs something done and responded to as soon as possible. If it's some code are you going to say that over a phone call or text it bit by bit?
>>
>>62365820
>sends you an email about it and needs something done and responded to as soon as possible. If it's some code are you going to say that over a phone call or text it bit by bit?

While I'm not into programming and such that argument still stands. Thanks man, I guess I'll enjoy pseudo-anonymity while it lasts!

>>
>>62364261
Just buy a damn old Nokia and get over with it.
You guys are idiots, nobody cares about your bitch or needs a smartphone that bad.
>>
>>62365045
this is how you get burnout, being availability all the time kills your productivity in the long run
>>
>>62365820
i wouldn't use a smartphone for that either, if it's something small and really important i would dictate it over the phone but everything else can wait until i get access to a proper computer
>>
>>62366687
Tell that to the CEOs of the world
>need to secure a $7 million deal with a company in Japan
>need to be available at 3 in the morning whenever they want to call
>Otherwise they'll fuck off to a competitor who's more than willing to pick up the pieces
It's also why you rarely see women in these positions, they stop in their early 30s to have kids and figure there's no point in living that kind of life when your husband already does it and makes enough money for the both of you

Of course this applies to small and medium businesses as well. I guess the only jobs where you can get away with dumbphones are the ones where you're not paid enough to care about what happens outside of your work hours
>>
>>62365045
That sounds terrible. Why would you want to live a life like that?
>>
>>62366526
DuraXA. that's CDMA but there is a GSM version as well

>>62366574

>>
>>62366766
Iunno money? You could argue that more money doesn't make you happier past $70k a year, but the middle class is shrinking and job security is less and less likely
>>

>invest in other properties and businesses

>train them well so when they're old enough they can inherit your wealth and continue growing it
>retire and live comfortably instead of in a retirement home filled with elder abuse or an LA storm drain because there's not enough money for pensions to go around
This is what people mean by "the rich get richer"

People have this misconception that the boss man is some mustache twirling villain smoking fat Cubans while his employees are groveling in his filth. The reality is employers are working on and off the clock at all time to keep the business healthy while providing payment and benefits for employees
All of that money reinvested over years and decades expands the business and creates more jobs for more people
>>
>>62366899
How are you going to raise your kids well if you're working all the time? Even if you had kids at 30 you'd be at least 55 when they are old enough to not be total retards. If you're lucky you'll die at 70 from all the stress you've built up from working so hard. That's 15 years you'll get to actually live your life.
>>
>>62367027
That's why a lot of high income families have stay at home moms
And the older you get and the more mature your business is you can afford to take time off every now and then

>die from stress at 70

>>

>>

That sucks
>>
>>62367217
It's built like a tank, but surprisingly comfy to use with lots of nice features like microsd slot and 5mp camera. I can't speak to other phones, but I'm happy with my kyocera.
>>
>>62367260
You can buy them cheap on ebay and ship overseas. They have quadband GSM so should work on any network.
>>

>>
>>62367798
if you get to that level sure but do you actually believe that his live is stressful?
He has reached the point where he is so rich that he doesn't have to care about being available nonstop because people want to make business with him not the other way round
this same thing goes for all the big companies like google microshit etc, but if you are a small to midsize company you will never reach this kind of earnings
>>

No need to use calendar, or google keep, no need to have a contact list always up to date. No need to be able to literally stop your car and work on a document....

>>62367950
There's two different kinds of jobs, working with people and working with things. When you work with things, you need focus and flow, free from distraction. When you're working with people, you need to maximize your time and jump around as much as possible.

I.e Manager vs Developer time schedules, a la Paul "Manchild" Graham
>>
>>62368942
>No need to use calendar, or google keep
You know, there's this great thing called a notebook, they even have pocket versions too. All work great offline

>no need to have a contact list always up to date
A dumb phone has contact lists as well

>No need to be able to literally stop your car and work on a document....
Laptop can easily do that with a WWAN card, probably more efficiently than your """smart""" phone

>>
>>62369101
Oh, didn't notice that, sorry

>>62369115
Yes, lots of dumb phones have email and browsers included (although they're more costly than the basic burner dumb phones).
>>
>>62369092
You don't seem to realize that everything is synchronized. You meet 10 people in 1 day, you have to write down their contacts once, and then it's DONE, forever, on all your devices.

Probably you don't have to meet 10 new people every day in your life, probably you don't have to take 10 appointments every day. But for busy people (which is almost the entire population) that's a major factor.
Probably you don't have the responsibility to replay to all the incoming emails as they arrive. Which is exactly what i stated: Evidently you have no life and no job.

Laptops can sync just as easy as a phone. Especially thinkpad tablets like say X220T, much more comfy than a """smart""" phone and probably more productive, since that seems to be your only focus

>Probably you don't have to meet 10 new people every day in your life, probably you don't have to take 10 appointments every day. But for busy people (which is almost the entire population) that's a major factor.

Nice ad hominem attack. I actually have a job as a data analyst. Anyways, I couldn't imagine being that busy that I have 10 appointments a day, do ppl actually live like that? I just kinda do my own zen thing and chill and get my work done. No hassles.

Argumentum ad hominem, which in this situation literally is: replying to a thread about OP personal condition, opened with OP personal statements about OP view of his own things.
You should connect your brain and realize that every reply to this post is "ad hominem".

Do what you want. Keep living an unscheduled life. Good for you that you can open your laptop whenever you want or need and sit and use it. Have it. Or that you don't have to in the first place. But this proves absolutely nothing about the quality or usefulness of smartphones, it's entirely an argument ad personam: yours.

I'm a lowly peasant doing back-office work a cross-border project management company. And when I say at, I mean I work from home. Since I'm not a basement dweller neckbeard still living with my parents, I've got shit to do that entails leaving my home.

I am responsible for a large chunk of the internal communication between project partners. Multi-million € projects literally stall by the amount of time it takes me to translate correspondence between the partners in either of 3 languages. If I get a fucking translation job, I need to know about it immediately. The botnet is my friend.

Did the same last year after the same epiphany. Here's my experience;
>got incredibly used to the convenience not just of mapping, but of over-head & street views of destinations (as well as landmarks along the way)
Can still read a map, but shit
>nice to keep work & personal life consolidated yet separate on the go (email for work w/out having to drop phone#)

C'mon...even with a phone book, if you're used to having it on hand, its hard to go without
>cameras on smartphones are 1000x better than on the dumbs
Plus video
>apps (I'm looking at you, weather/radio to name two)
Plus wether you like it or not, people are going to judge you for not having what's deemed as "basic" modern technology at the ready. If I didn't have to deal with people so much I might have been able to pull it off, but if you're at all accustomed to having "the world at your fingertips" it's going to be a tough haul back to the good ol' days, friend.

If you make it with success, post in the future with tips on how. I'd love to lose this thing, but I just don't feel like I can.

>>62370118 (my other post for reference)

I run an IT consulting business from home with clients across the country. I ran my business with pic related phone (Samsung T401g). Prepaid joint, $25/mo for 1000 minutes (no rollover) from Net10. My wife decided she wanted a smartphone again anfter 2 years of using these phones and got new android phones for all of us. I find now that I waste more time on the phone answering stupid shit than doing actual work because I'm now more accessible. One client thought it would be great to give me a company email address and have me install the Outlook app to access it. Now he sends me stupid ass emails all day long. A second one asks me the most insanely basic questions on Hangouts now.

I genuinely want to go back to something like what I had or maybe a feature phone with a slightly better camera. That's probably the one thing I would miss the most if I decide to ditch the smartphone right now.

Hmm, derp a lurp, I wonder which version of the file this is, is it the one from this morning that Alvin modified, or is it the one from George that has the latest Q2 figures in them. Or wait, did Carly address those comments in this mornings file or was it added after Ray did the status report. Damn, I got like 4 versions of this file from 5 people, hope I don't delete the wrong one and have to have ITS come and restore it on my hard drive like last week when the version numbers got swapped.

Tell me again how attachments are superior to cloud based files :^)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseband_processor
>A baseband processor typically uses its own RAM and firmware
>Since the software which runs on baseband processors is usually proprietary, it is impossible to perform an independent code audit. By reverse engineering some of the baseband chips, researchers have found security vulnerabilities that could be used to access and modify data on the phone remotely
https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/replicant-developers-find-and-close-samsung-galaxy-backdoor
>Today's phones come with two separate processors: one is a general-purpose applications processor that runs the main operating system, e.g. Android; the other, known as the modem, baseband, or radio, is in charge of communications with the mobile telephony network. This processor always runs a proprietary operating system, and these systems are known to have backdoors that make it possible to remotely convert the modem into a remote spying device. The spying can involve activating the device's microphone, but it could also use the precise GPS location of the device and access the camera, as well as the user data stored on the phone. Moreover, modems are connected most of the time to the operator's network, making the backdoors nearly always accessible
>we discovered that the proprietary program running on the applications processor in charge of handling the communication protocol with the modem actually implements a backdoor that lets the modem perform remote file I/O operations on the file system

>baseband also has privileged access to hardware
>"airplane mode" is a software switch that simply disconnects your OS from the baseband, but the baseband is still connected to cellular network
>powering down a phone does nothing, since the baseband is still know to operate even with ROM hardware shut down
>no removable batteries anymore, so baseband always on and connected to network
>cell towers constantly triangulating your devices location

Yea well, maybe your office shouldn't work like a fucking assembly line, everyone doing 10% of the work. Maybe your workers should be competent enough to be able to finish a document by themselves and then send it to the translator to have other language versions. That's how our company works, and shit gets done quickly, without any confusion, using mail attachments.

Even if we had those trained monkeys that can't do more than 10% of the work, we'd have a proper workflow where monkey A does the first 10%, then forwards it to monkey B who does the second 10% and so on.

I have 4 kids, the oldest of which is 24. We didn't have cellphones back when she was a newborn. They were around, but too expensive for the average person and even if you had one they were expensive to use. Back then I sold cellphones for a CellularONE retailer. Plans would be something retarded like 60 minutes a month free and $.70 a minute after that for $60/month or something like that. In 1993 money $60 a month is like paying ~$103 a month today. On top of that, phones had to be purchased outright and the cheapest thing I can remember selling back then was a Kenwood cellphone (a rebranded NEC phone) for about $400 (~$685 in 2017). Not many people were rushing out to get cellphones back then so if you had a baby at home you might stop and call the crib from a payphone if you were out or maybe you carried a pager, which I had.
>>
>>62370094
Still going strong. When will it god damn die? Do you a custom rom on it?

But that's what smart phones cost today. I think phone companies are just better at luring ppl in by hiding the true cost through (((monthly))) payments.

here in the US, nobody pays for a phone outright unless you're buying a cheap pay-as-you-go joint you pick up at the local 7-11 like something from Virgin Mobile, Net10/Tracfone, or the like.

In 1993, a cellphone was a luxury item.
