Pretty much, S series are server cards
So you would see them in more of a render box situation, while the slightly lower tier cards like the W9100 would be in a desktop.
Though the S9170 is a weird middle ground, designed for racks, but also has video outputs

Definitely this. It doesn't look like a cassette tape nor a racecar. Nvidia gets an honorable mention for their unique design, but then they fucked it up with needless polygons. I have yet to see a two-three fan model that looks good, despite better cooling. Gamers ruin everything.

am I just the only guy who wasn't fazed by the looks of graphics cards after they started getting heatsinks and fans?

you guys realize the only important part is the graphics chip, right? sure you need some PCB to connect it to the slot, and some cooling solution. the rest is just glitter. especially the heatsink design, the plastic casing shape, the fans, the colors, the printed logos...

in fact, most normal people aren't even going to see that shit because only superficial fools buy transparent cases with fluorescent bulbs like a store display window in some sleazy red light districts. I mean when you game, do you stare at your monitor or your case?!?!?!?!?

it's like those ridiculous heatsinks on RAM sticks

P.S: those spinning fans only inspire modders because they make you think of the spinning wheels on a lamborghini or a porsche. marketingâ„¢ at its finest

I can only assume that it would be double the cost of a single GPU and a little bit more as each PCB would need to have it's own RAM/power delivery. I guess they realised if the customer wanted two GPU's they will buy two GPU's. I also guess the TDP of two cards sandwiched together like that requires beefier cooling than a single blower fan.

I always loved the goofy design of this card.

Fun story with it: Friend had this exact model of card. He eventually upgraded his video card and gave me this one. Upon looking at the card more in depth, I noticed that there was a silkscreened "PROTOTYPE" near the model number, and the BIOS on it wasn't anything that I could find anywhere online. It also didn't run stuff exactly like it should, like the card instruction set was incomplete. Most tools like GPUID never correctly identified it, if at all.

I'm wondering if it was indeed a prototype card. My friend said he bought it from some shady guy via some shady deal. Makes me think he was onto something.

yeah, Crysis was a killer. I remember reading an article somewhere about what it takes to fun Crysis maxed at 1080p and 8xMSAA. It turned out you need 4 (four) HD5870 on liquid nitrogen.
