Because most things start out in a safestate with no critical errors. An error can be seen as a violation of good state, so restarting restores the state and "fixes" the error (temporarily at least). This isn't generally the case for hardware, but it is the case for software outside of rare cases. For example, there are games where you can trigger a softlock and then save your progress with the bad state, which would permanently ruin that save file. Infamous example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkB53h2M5Pw

std is the namespace. It's so you can scope names of things like functions. Say you wanted to make your own cout function. How would you call it and differentiate it from std::cout? Namespaces.

The way to use cout without std:: is to write "using namespace std" at the top of your program which basically tells the compiler that when you use cout, you really mean std::cout. This is bad practice because you're polluting your global namespace.

Retarded. Find me one person who didn't drink alcohol before they tried heroin. Of course you could say, well they probably did a lot of things before trying heroin, you can't say it's causative. Which is why the gateway drug thing is BS in the first place.

I've never overclocked before, and I want to know if having good temps and passing a prime95 torture test (say 24h) is enough to assume the automatic settings are good, or if it's possible they could fuck something up in the long run or be non-optimal and reduce the chip's life expectancy with idiotic settings or something.

>>62354592
Use x264 or something. Prime95 is just too brutal for extended testing. No point since you'll never see loads that high unless you regularly use AVX instructions. Use it for short periods (10-15 mins) to see what your max temps are and to expose any obvious instabilities. And leaving it for 24 hrs without monitoring it is dumb.

No you can't assume automatic settings are good. Make sure your vcore isnt stupidly high since auto settings often overvolt.

This is somewhat technology related, or at least I don't know a better board for this. Why the fuck are prescription glasses so expensive? But at around 300-400 euro a pair I'm pretty much shoehorned into getting some boring and basic but that goes with everything.

What's a good vcore? OpenHardwareMonitor says 0.68V, CPU-Z says 1.36V, CoreTemp says 1.475V. I'm currently at 4.4GHz, on an i5-6600k
>>
>>62355686
Oh and checking the BIOS it's set to "Auto" with no indication of the actual level.
>>
>>62355686
Use hwinfo for the most accurate readings.

Also, do you have speedstep on? If so, your vcore will fluctuate, so you want to measure it under load.

Max vcore according to intel datasheets is 1.52V. Obviously you don't wanna go anywhere near there since that's absolute max and your temps will be too high anyways. 1.35 - 1.4 V is okay for longevity. 1.475 is definitely way too high if that reading is accurate.

>>62355744
Auto means it overclocks via the VID. That's a number the processor requests by determining is the voltage it needs at any given moment. This can often result in overvolting, especially if you're using high LLC settings. Most people, if overclocking that way, will use a lower LLC setting and then use a voltage offset to get their vcore where they need it. This is better than manual vcore because you can use speedstep and C states to downlock your CPU under load. It's a bit more finicky to tune correctly, though, since VID changes based on clock speed.

How often do new processors come out, and how much different is the new iteration? Same question for graphics cards.
>>
>>62355896
Intel innovates every 6 months to a year. Difference is massive increases in performance and the privilege of buying the latest mobo chipset.
>>
>>62355791
By LLC I assume you mean load-line calibration? Sorry, like I said I am a total noob and that's the setting that best matches the acronym. If so, it was auto-set to Level 5, which according to the diagram in the half-engrish bios tooltip is the lowest.
How would I go about tuning an offset?

>>62355757
I do have speedstep on, and all those values were under full load (p95). I'm gonna try hwinfo now
>>
>>62355965
Yeah that's what LLC is.

Usually higher levels mean more LLC. In case you're not aware, under load your vcore will normally go down a bit. This is called vdroop, and it can result in instability when OCing. LLC compensates for this by boosting voltage at load a bit. You can see how when combined with auto voltage that already tends to overvolt, it makes the problem worse.

Check your manual, typically higher LLC levels mean more LLC. You can also just test it yourself by checking what your vcore is under load with LLC at level 5 and 0.

As for offsets it should be called adaptive or dynamic voltage depending on your mobo. Again, check your manual. Most likely you can change vcore from auto to dynamic and it'll have a box where you can enter an offset.

>>62356069
Alright so I switched LLC from level 5 all the way to level 1 (it goes only from 1 to 5), re-started prime95 and hwinfo, and got a radically different 1.470V.
Pic related seems to confirm that 5 is the correct level then.

Anyway, can you recommend me a good guide to OCing? It's clear that the automatic setting won't cut it. So since I have no idea what I'm doing, instead of floundering around trying to patch up the voltage by leeching off /sqt/, I might as well get to understand what the fuck this all actually means and do it properly.
>>
>>62356069
kek, yeah dude, turn off that shit immediately. That's so close to the danger zone.

Like I said, your processor generates a number called a VID which is how much voltage it thinks it needs to maintain stable. This is done dynamically according to load and clock frequency, and some other magical factors. When you set your vcore to auto, this is the number used as a basis for what voltage the mobo will send to your CPU.

An offset allows you to add/subtract voltage from this number.

Best way to do this in my experience:
Set LLC to low (pretty sure it's high rn based on that ridiculous vcore).
Boot and check your vcore under load. If it's good, check stability. Not stable? Add a positive offset to increase vcore a bit. Rinse, repeat.

It's also possible to use negative offsets but I would advise against those since in my experience it drops idle voltages too low and you'll get instability when the CPU is downclocked.
>>
>>62356182
Oh, btw, update your BIOS. A lot of Skylake boards overvolted out of the box. Mine did for example, and it limited my max OC until they fixed it.
>>
>>62356223
One more thing, did you check your vcore reading in BIOS? Just to rule out issues with your monitoring software.
>>
>>62356182
Ah, thanks for the offset explanation, that helps a lot.

Since LLC did jack shit, what do now? Although first I'll try updating the bios like you said.

>>
>>62356285
>>62356263

True, although you could just turn off speedstep/c states temporarily. If your vcore is still too high under load after the BIOS update, play with negative offsets. Just be sure to check idle stability (basically just leave your computer sitting and see if it crashes).
>>
>>62356307
Oh, also, you can see VID in hwinfo under the processor section, so I'd be curious to know what that is under load compared to actual vcore.

Awesome, thanks for all your advice. Seems to be hovering around 57*C and 1.31vcore. I'll leave it overnight as recommended, but I did do about 5 hours of prime95 earlier so I'm pretty confident it will be fine.

4.4GHz doesn't sound like a lot but for babby's first overclock I'm quite satisfied. I'll probably go back and push it further manually. I also need to OC my DDR4.

Here's a question more suited to the spirit of the thread: can constantly (i.e. every 5-10 seconds) raising and lowering fan speed over several hours (overnight) do any harm? The 57-59*C it's hovering at happens to fall on a kink on 5-vertex the fan "curve" I set up, so every time it runs slightly hotter the fans spin up (to about 1900RPM) and then when it drops back a few degrees the fans spin back down (to 1400 or so).

I bought an SSD off Amazon the other day with same day shipping. It didn't come for 3 days and I complained to Amazon and they sent me a replacement.

Suddenly though, like 20 minutes ago, the shit shipping company that I was pretty confident would not fucking deliver decided to deliver the original package. So I have my SSD now and I have a second SSD coming in the mail that I did not pay for.

Will I get in trouble? I mean, do I just say nothing?

Amazon has so much money that they can afford to do shit like this to make everyone as happy as possible.

If they sent it with their same-day shipping method, whatever logistics they've got are reliable enough that if it hasn't arrived in 3 days, that means something went very wrong. So it's not unreasonable to send out a replacement.

You can use a regular switch if you're really that much of a cheap ass, you just have to complete a circuit.

Or you could just go to an electronics store like a normal person and buy a few switches for $2.
>>

They're alright. I have one in one of my laptops and it feels pretty snappy, no problems for like a year. I bought a cheap Thinkpad the other day and I wanted a cheap SSD to just throw in there that wasn't like, 60GB or some shit. If I feel like it I'll get a better one but they're usually fine.

"Defragmenting" doesn't mean anything to an SSD. It's a literal non-concept. The OS doesn't even see where files are, and their location is fluid. If you make partitions, they don't represent actual locations, and don't have any impact on where a given file goes. As long as trim is working and the drive isn't over-full, you're good.

For most day to day uses tor etc create more problems than they solve. Just use your ISPs default dns. They see everything you do anyway, and they're usually the fastest. Blockchain is a list of transactions that exists on computers around the world who are rewarded for maintaining a copy. It doesn't have to be a money transaction, just some kind of change. So you could have an independent social network or something on it. A lot of shit could be blockchain based in the future.

I'm at my wits' end. I consider myself a decent programmer but whener it comes down to software engineering I never understand shit. Engineers at work talk about patterns I never heard of, and when I look them up the explanation always seems abstract as fuck and I'm not sure what to do to implement it. I looked up some software engineering resources but it's always the same problem, they use abstract words like "request", "module" and "service" but don't use those words in the context of a practical implementation so it feels like they lose meaning.

No, they're definitely working their buns off to try and outdo each other. We're actually running up against a wall though. - CRON is configured to send e-mails using MAILTO:<address> on the first line, and for most commands this works fine

- Can I somehow retrieve the contents of a failed e-mail from sendmail?
- Can I somehow track the process/command invoked by cron that generated the e-mail?

I think a better, far less extreme example is gay marriage. Suppose it's 2008 and you privately expressed support for "traditional" marriage only (like HRC and Obama did). 6 years later, you may have different views, but someone could come along and produce your chat log that comes off as super-bigoted today. It's one thing if you published your views on your own blog, but no, you said it only to some internet buddies. With no autonomy over your communication privacy, something like this can happen.

It's doable, but it's pushing it a bit. If you're someone who cares about "future proofing" at all, its not ideal. It's the difference between ultra on a lot of games, and maybe scaling things back here and there. For productivity it's totally worth it. For everything else, I'd say it depends on how big your screen will be and whether the games you'll be playing benefit from it.

I've been trying to open my router ports so I can create servers in a few games to play with friends, but I'm failing miserably.

This is my router:
http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/en/access-network/echolife-hg8245h-pid-8952133

I've followed a ton of tutorials but nothing seems to work. I've enabled DMZ but even then it won't work. I'm guessing it has to do with some firewall option but I can't find any firewall options on the router page.

Any help is appreciated.

My laptop fell, and the speakers broke, and now there's that zzz-z-zzz-zz-zzzzz sound whenever I'm playing something. It's same as with earphones/headphones, when they fall.
How much do new speakers cost, and where can I buy them?

Thanks for the help

Tried that cmd, it went fine but still I can't ping my IP.

Here's my settings
>>
>>62364873
I tried using this:

https://upnp-portmapper.sourceforge.io/

And now the ports show up in the uPnP page, but still using websites to check my ports shows nothing.

I noticed this program lista a different "external address" for me than my regular IP though, so I tried to ping it and it works. What's going on?
>>
>>62364921
it's not that the linux is not booting, I didn't even get to installation yet
it's that the virtual machine is not booting , I activated UEFI instead of BIOS and it doesn't load the virtual hardware

Also this is very weird but that portforward website shows this screenshot of my router page and it has a firewall option - my router itself has no such option
>>
>>62364601
>>62365018
It could be that your behind a CGNAT, in which case you will not be able to port forward without paying for a static IP address.

Who is your ISP? And I assume you're on fibre since your using a ONT router.

Ok, So I have been reading how PCH replaced NB/SB architecture, but I don't quite get how EC (embedded controller) fits into this picture. Wasn't PCH supposed to take over the south bridge functionality and do those tasks? Why is there a separate EC chip?
>>
>>62364947
>but still I can't ping my IP
scan ur WAN for those ports using any online port scanner to confirm, if u haven't.
you pinging your WAN address i hope
that's usually not forwarding but labeled as 'ICMP echo' or some crap like that, or simply the 'Firewall' of the device.
don't use ping as an indication, you use telnet <ip> <port> for that.
Don't use upnp please

in external try 255.255.255.255, maybe it'll accept it as 'any address'
source ( 7777 - 7777) should be ur PC listening on them, netstat -noa to confirm that its listening
ext should be empty.
apply and reboot.

What's the easiest way to install the new versions of my Firefox addons?
>>
>>62362487
Yeah just install from fdroid, then you have to tap the headphones icon instead of the play icon on a video - this will play it sound-only and will continue after the screen locks

OK this one is really stupid, but bear with me please.

Assuming I have no software installed, what regulates the temps and fans for the CPU? BIOS/UEFI? Because my motherboard doesn't yet have a sensor support for Linux and I'm a little worried the chip is going to overheat when crunching BOINC tasks 24/7.

I use YouTube every now and then to watch videos. They have now forced their new shitty layout on me. I have my browser set to clear every piece of data when it closes. This means that if I restore the old layout, I will have to through the same fucking process every time I visit YouTube after closing the browser. How the fuck do I avoid this?
>>
>>62365484
Alright, hopefully nothing to worry about then, it was stable running prime95 in Windows.

My PC froze multiple times today, probably because folding@home automatically adding all 12 CPU cores to compute with while BOINC was also running them (I don't know why, I specifically disabled CPU in folding), should I worry? Could something happen to the chip? It froze like 5 times before I figured out what's going on, and was frozen overnight...

I have 3 6TB's in RAID 5 but am planning for 5 6TBs in RAID 6...

or should I get 2 10TB's (and waste some space since only 6TB will be used in each)?

So then as I slowly replace the 6TB drives, eventually I will have 5 10TB drives???

I think its mainly important the RAM matches if they are on the same channel.

SO RAM 1 & 3 match, and RAM 2 & 4 match, assuming you have 4 slots. (I believe all mobos alternate like this but check manual).

However, I think its possible if some thing is assigned memory space that goes across the channels, it will really only run as fast as the slowest ram stick.

Like as if you had two hard drives that dont match, put them in RAID 0, your performance is hampered by the slowest one.

So really, just make them all match if you can.
>>
>>62365878
Yeah, it's probably a coincidence. A lot of unsubstantiated rumors have gone around ever since 10 came out. Not that microsoft isn't ass, just this isn't the sort of thing they're likely to bother with. Just get a VPN or Seedbox.

Deprecated since firefox 41 (released in 2015).
There is an addon called New Tab Override but you cannot load local files with it. You can upload an html file into the localstorage of the extension to load that, but it won't load css or images in the directory of the html.
