Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook, GETAC's,Toughbooks).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN HP Elitebook (2570p, 8770W, 2170p), Dell Latitude/Precision (E6430, E6440, E7440) and P, T, X, and W SERIES if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

Recommended original IBM design models:
T60, T61, X60, X61, 860, Transnote, PC110
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm going Uni soon, figures after being on /g/ a lot, I should get a thinkpad.

I want my laptop to basically be a capable desktop PC, so weight is not an issue (also im pretty strong).
Being an autist, I have autist hobbies. I need a thinkpad that can handle shit like
>photoshop
>after effect
>sony vegas
>playing overwatch
>can run emulators like dolphin at a decent framerate, at least 20.
>digital drawing and animating software (2d and 3d)
>coding
>anything that is usually in a physics degree that requires software, sorta like simulations in vpython

Weight is never an issue, it could be 20kg, shit dont bother me if its worth it. Its gonna be plugged in mostly. I'm good with 15.5 inch screens but smaller is fine.
What would you guys recommend?

I have a dankpad with winblows 7 on it. I'm finding I'm running into issues with key combinations / rollovers.

I can't seem to input four simultaneous keyboard inputs. Three is fine. I'm trying to use a virtual desktop manager (virtuawin) and it doesn't go very well. Any inputs inb4 >not tech support ?
>>
>>62351731
Damn, I cleaned it with some rubbing alcohol and got a little bit on the keys, but I let it sit and dry upside down for like two hours, so I figured it would be dry by then.

It worked for a solid couple of hours before it randomly starting acting up and it hasn't worked since.

All of you memebois getting t420/x220 keyboards for the t430/x230 means I have to pay extra to replace it too.

No big I guess, I just swapped the keyboards of my t420 with the x220 and I'll wait for the replacement in a week hopefully. I am just wondering whether the keyboard just happened to die or if it was because of the rubbing alcohol.
>>
>>62352209
You might not need it, mine wasn't throttling with the stock one. I just wanted to experiment.
>>
>>62351508
Thats a pretty decent drop. Considering my workload this seems like a worth while addition.
>>
>>62352345
Do you have a point of reference before the quad core upgrade? I wonder how hot it'll get with two extra cores if i'm getting around 24 with this 4300m.

>>
Going back to community college probably next semester. I'm gonna study some kind of CS. I've only dabbled in some slight programming so I don't know a lot. Basically my question is how hard is compiling on a CPU? Right now I have
>X200T - C2D SL9400
>X220T - i7-2620M
>W520 - i7-2720QM

So I'm fairly certain I can do whatever programming I'm going to learn but I'm wondering how they will perform and if I can get away with my X200T? I'm thinking of either learning Java or C++ as that's what my college offers. Then again I'm thinking of going full meme and doing web design. If I go that route, then any of these will do and the W520 is complete overkill.
>>
>>62352621
Anything is fine, but in general lower specifications = longer compile time, but that is not going to be an issue for you when it comes to the small programming you'll be doing in college.
>>
>>62352621
just take that X220t and impress everybody with the nice twisting display :^)

It depends. With my X220 and a 9cell battery I can get 9 hours of life but this is with screen brightness at it's lowest, CPU capped at 800MHz and screen set to turn off after 1min of inactivity. It's a potential issue, yes. If it didn't say it had a locked BIOS you should be fine.

Make sure to dual boot with Windows, you'll appreciate the familiarity. It's also worth considering swapping an SSD in, it'll make everything much faster.

With more and more businesses moving away from thinkpads (and business laptops in general) to MacBook pros, Dell XPS, HP spectre, etc, how can we expect Thinkpads to become cheap every 4 years? With less corporations buying thinkpads that means there will be less thinkpads flooding the market once they're done with them. The only reason old thinkpads are so good and so cheap is because biz buys so much. Will the x240/x250 become the last old good cheap thinkpads?

For the T420 either you get the latest official bios or the modded bios, you can change the logo regardless of the bios.

You're supposed to do that.
>I am on Linux how do that
No idea i don't use Linux.

Yes you need a 640x480 image, for a 16:9 screen just make a 16:9 one and force the aspect ratio to 4:3.
>I have a gif i dont know if that works
It does and it's the best format to get files with small filesize and "decent" quality.

I guess now's a good time to make you guys jelaous. If you're running Coreboot or Libreboot, you can use any png image at any size you want (as long as it fits in your flash chip). For example, I have a 8MB flash chip on my W500, so I can have a ~7MB boot image at full color quality.

Currently I just have it set to black. Should I make something special?

Assuming you mean an X61t, I got mine for 20€ though the pen is missing and I had to order one for 25€ (In the EU they're massively expenive)

One thing to look out for with the X60t and X61t is the battery latches. There are 2 battery locks that last forever but the back of the batteryis held in place by 2 super flimsy latches that are bound to break off. If you have to fix is you can make new latches from plastic and glue them to your battery. Works fine for me.

that sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. ill see about that T430. it should be enough for them, it just depends on whether they trust me to find a used product that needs upgrades and deliver it to them in one piece, haha. (what about T450, havent heard anything about those at all, and they were difficult to find on ebay when i looked). according to the thinkpad buyers guide in the OP, s series are generally not as good. is the difference enough to make me regret my purchase of a T420s over a T420? i really like the smaller form factor of the x series, but screen quality is important enough to me that i would get a T420 over an x220/230 if i cant buy a better screen for them. from what you're saying, im leaning towards a T420 right now, as i kind of want the classic thinkpad experience with the older keyboard. some anons were posting about a thinkpad where you could take out the disc drive and replace it with an hdd, would you know which one that was?

After using a macbook the touchpad on the thinkpad is undeniably shit.

My main problem with it is that the trackpad feels almost no different from the surrounding black chasis.

How difficult would it be to crowfund a chinese company to create a tempered glass trackpad surface? The trackpad surface itself on the thinkpad is just a replaceable sticker and smartphone tempered glass are super cheap now. Like literally a tempered glass "screen protector" in the dimensions of the trackpad size with smooth edges. You could sell it for $10 and it would cost pennies to make.

SOMEBODY MAKE THIS HAPPEN

For a 9 cell:

>Be a thief
>See a laptop

>Just kidding it's a shitty thinkpad who's gonna want that shit?!
>>
>>62361125
I leave my Thinkpad laying around everywhere I go and it's never been stolen. The average person doesn't know what they have in front of them.
>>
What kind of idiot leaves their laptop?
>>
Nigger here. I don't like that the chiclet keys are smile shaped as looking at it might make people happy. I want people to have frowns on there faces. I am going to act like having chiclet keys makes a laptop dirty somehow even though apple and dell laptops have them too.

Is there a Sandy Bridge or newer X series with an IPS screen?
>>
>>62362291
x220, x230, x240 for fullhd
>>
>>62362291

X220 and you can swap the panel for ips, some anon showed an ebay x220 with the ips already swaped
>>
>>62362304
>>62362312

ty anons

I know /tpg/ normally goes for the 20s and 30s, but are there any glaring issues with the x240? Hot swapping the battery is actually pretty useful for me.
>>
>>62362361
Single RAM stick and the touchpad swap mod is mandatory if you want to use the trackpoint. Also less powerful than the x230 because it uses ulv processors but you get great battery life with them because of the 15w max tdp.

Look for HQ, those are quad cores. $900 for a dual core is a waste.
>>
>>62362291
W540. 3K IPS swap is $100/€80

>>62362263
Average price, but not a crazy bargain.

But considering you can get a quad core and maybe SSD for the same price, I suggest you take another look.

I have an e550. It's alright, battery life isn't so good. But I might have fucked it up by having it plugged in all the time. But in my opinion it's great, haven't regretted it
>>
>>62363272
Not him, but care to elaborate? I have one and it's pretty comfy. Not as old school as my X220, but still very good.
>>
>>62363384
Why should having it plugged in all the time fuck it up?
>>
>>62363384
That does not harm to the battery.
>>
>>62363459
Because old people say it does.

>>
>>62363968
If your battery seems to hold less charge you got a lot of options to recondition it with the Lenovo energy manager thingy. Keeping it plugged in is OK, though it would be even better to set loading thresholds so it always stays between 50% and 60%

I'm planning on buying a X1C 2017. I previously had a used x220, which broke and a used x230, which broke after maybe 3 months or so. The thing is expensive, but I need one for university and I just want something that is not going to just break down randomly.

T440s or T440p? I'm going to use them for uni (studying Computer Engineering)

The thing hasn't disappointed, feels good to work outside of the office sometimes.

if i buy a used thinkpad what are the odds there's a hardware gaylogger or backdoor left by the previous owner? how do you purge everything before installing your loonix of choice

Does having a GT730m in a T440p give any problems under GNU/Linux? Reduced battery life, worse performance or anything?
>>
>>62364702
Install new OS.
Coreboot/libreboot.
Ensure that BIOS lock is absent.
Ensure that computrace is disabled.
>>
>>62364791
You can disable it with Honeybee or Bumblebee or whatever, and then the only downside is a bit of weight.
>>
>>62365446
Yeah but I've read about some issues with Optimus or Bumblebee or whatever with T440p and GNU/Linux, stuff like this: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/issues/78

I dunno if it's fixed though
