I'm indifferent to it, in all honesty.

Phones as they are are VERY limited in design, because they are more or less forced into being flat monolith like things. Each looks the same as the last with little variation.

Bezel free phones, phones that curve, etc, show the absolute very beginning of phones that break the mold and start taking on distinct shapes or forms in terms of their touch sensitive interface. It's a baby step, but it's something.

For me the future will be here when:

a. touch interface bends and warps and crazy angles, opening the door for all sorts of things
b. screens no longer need to portray light to show coloured images

Because then tech will cease to look like tech and begin to blend in with nature.

It has nothing to do with functionally, It just looks cool on a marketing slide and everyone seems to have sucked down the koolaid. What was touted a good design by reviewers is now "dated" less than a year later.
This curved screen shit (along with taking advantage of carrier financing) is also causing a price creep because its harder to make.

Seriously fucking this. I listen to various podcasts on my morning commutes to help pass the time, one that I was listening to recently was reviewing a bunch of new Android phones. They were raving about how "beautiful" all these glass backed phones are while literally in the same breath lamenting how easily they scratch and break. People are so fucking stupid, what happened to utilitarian and dependable devices? Now all we have are overpriced fashion accessories with reduced functionality that break if you sneeze on them and are effectively un-repairable. Seriously why bother with making phones look like jewelery when everyone's just going to admire it for five minutes before slapping it into an ugly plastic case and never see or use it naked again until they turn it in after two years to upgrade.

Been living under a rock? Samshit changed to it with the S6 and now in 2017 everyone is doing it. Glass backs are so shitty that they still break even with a case on unless you have some kind of one inch thick Otter Box monstrosity for a case. It's so fucking stupid, and of course don't even get me going on the removal of features like replaceable batters, IR blasters, SD slots, and headphone jack. Now this year Applel is removing the fingerprint scanner.

I had I Xiaomi Mi note pro with a glass backplate
After a year of use it had a crack on the screen, a dented frame and i finally dropped it so it hit the curb with it's back, it figuratively blew up with tiny shards all over the place and internalsentirely exposed.
I went and got me a rugged phone for 200$, my coworker who had a samsung s7 with cracks on the front and on the back asked me what it is and got himself the same phone next day.

Rounded edges aren't uniform, they'll reflect light awkwardly and distort the edge of the picture.

That might be ok for a phone where you want to maximise screen space, and its a cute gimmick. But a monitor? I'd absolutely rather have a uniform flat rectangular image, with bevelled edges. As in all normal monitors.

Doesn't have to be glass though they could use polycarbonate, ceramic, or carbon fiber to name a few. All would be more durable than fucking glass while still having wireless charging. Hell I'd love to see a phone manufacturer use that ceramic that Corelle uses to make their dishes with. I have Corelle dishes and those fuckers don't break even when dropped on tile.
