I'm having an issue and fuck it, windows thread for my windows issue. So I reinstalled windows and all my apps, and my computer updates itself somehow and I ended up with the stupid malicious software removal thing and now no app will start. Atom won't start, Avast won't start now, deluge won't work and when I tried qbitorrent it installed but wouldn't show the GUI, PIA VPN starts but won't let me right click to login. What's happening?

Windows as whole went to shit with Win10
And Windows hasn't ever been the best OS

Dual booting 7 and 10.. haven't gone back to 10 in a few months now... Might just wipe that partition.

I cant open apps from the search bar
For example I type "Paint" and press Enter nothing...Try with Paint 3D and does work

And now I'm searching for a solution

The problem with Vista was lack of initial support and low-end Pentium Dual Core shitboxes with 512MB of RAM that shipped with Vista.

I've used 10 for a while a bit after it started being given away for win7 users.
It was going okay, didn't like the UI though and saw some problems here and there, but nothing unmanageable.
Then some stray update came. I turned my pc on in the morning, got myself some breakfast and came to a totally blank screen, only the cursor was present.
I figured something stupid was going on and it would start up properly after a few minutes, but even the task manager wouldn't show up.
Figures, i tried going to safe mode after restarting a few times and seeing that it wasn't getting any better.

Same thing in safe mode. Panic ensues.
Luckily i had access to the installation files elsewhere, a disc drive and a usb drive.
At first i tried repairing it. Didn't work, stuck during installation for an unusual time. Tried reinstalling it. Same thing, stuck for an hour on a certain percentage. Wiped my HDD, and then my second HDD. Same. Fucking. Thing. By this point half my Saturday is lost on trying to get the fucking thing working.
I just happened to hear a thing or two about linux at around that time, so i installed that. Turns out my drives didn't even wipe out, I had like 7 new paritions god knows where those came from.
I honestly didn't want to wipe my pc entirely, but the win10 installer actually refused to do a soft install, probably because it kept making new partitions even though i opted for a full wipe.

I wasn't ready for linux at the time since i knew little about it so i downloaded a win10 installer again. After a full wipe using linux, and about 2 tries i finally got it to work.

But my fucking licence key wouldn't get accepted, for once i got a genuine copy and this shit happens.

Fuck windows 10. I know for certain there were at least 2 more people with that retarded blank screen problem, and i must've had some divine bad luck to fall on both that and the update aneurysm, but never again windows ten.

Honestly, it's not that bad. Everything works. No fiddling. Nothing is complicated. Not nearly as buggy. Sure, it's a little messy, but I have Adobe Lightroom,

If you install updates then it's very unlikely you'll get pwned by some exploit, beyond that it's just common sense in not running big_boobs.jpg.avi.exe or using insecure software like flash and java.

Windows 10 feels significantly less cohesive than XP or 7. All the different Powerpoint-designed menus, the multiple settings programs. Furthermore, it's still having issues with multiple monitor setups. NT's codebase must be a clusterfuck by now.

Kind of, but so is malware. Really, the only way to have a stable and secure windows is to fresh install it, crack it PROPERLY (normies fail miserably at this, cracks usually come bundled with crap), install a decent AV (no low market share wannabe's, no bitdefender, no comodo, no avira, no spybot and for fuck's sake NO spyware such as Putin's keylogger (a.k.a. kaspersky), avast, avg), then proceed to use their computers with common sense. Loonix has advantage when it comes to this since loonix malware is very, very rare, but its security is not perfect, exploits can be found.
>>
>>62348244
That's implying it doesn't have any advantages. Simply the fact that it is open source and not controlled by a giant company makes it the obvious choice for a lot of people.
>>
Can somebody please spoonfeed me good tutorials on throwing out most of the telemetry and shit like that outta my Windose 10? You see, I'm a winfag - worse, win10fag - so, binging it myself, let alone making sure what I've found is enough, is a strenuous task. I've tried fighting it every now and then, but I'm likely a major update or two behind the times...
>>
>>62348408
In short - don't, it can and will cause unstability, security issues and bugs. If you've done shit like that then proceed to reinstall.

I'm using it on a laptop for work. When I leave hibernation, it sometimes inexplicably swaps the external monitors. Perhaps this isn't the best example, since I don't know what the current state of hibernation is on Linux, but it seems like a pretty obvious bug to quash.

Less of a bug and more of a lack of a feature: when I remove the laptop from its dock and return it, the windows that were on external monitors don't return to where they were. I suspect this is because of normies connecting their PC to switched-off monitors, but I'd at least like to be able to choose.

>>62348383
We've all seen that image about how Windows is developed being posted. Microsoft hires a lot of young engineers who are less concerned about maintaining a solid ecosystem and more concerned about making products they can use as leverage for promotions or jobs elsewhere. At least with something like OS X, they have *BSDs to compare it to, a POSIX specification to adhere to and an overlord mandating a style to be held over the entire ecosystem. Microsoft can do whatever they want and the market will adapt, so we get layers of compatibility and multiple redundant programs on a clean install.
>>
>>62348396
>install a decent antivirus
Or use Windows Defender, browser addons and common sense. Should you still somehow manage to get a virus clean install the shit out of your system and learn from your mistakes.
>>
>>62348361
I feel like people really overstate the problems with 10's UI inconsistency, they need to unify the 3 or so different context menu types, but other than that it's pretty consistent. They have to slowly deprecate the old control panel otherwise people will complain that it disappeared suddenly without warning, it'll be rendered mostly non-functional with the next update, and almost everything in the system already redirects to the new settings program (which is far superior imo, no shitty unresponsive hyperlinks and inconsistent layout). Can't say I've had any problems with multiple monitors, what problems are you having exactly?
>>

>Or use Windows Defender, browser addons and common sense.

>>
>>62348450

Which one? The one with some retard overexplaining the simple process of adding a dropdown? Kernel development is separate from OS development anyway, MS has some of the best kernel developers in the world and NT is a consistently solid kernel, unfortunately lumbered with the pajeetified Windows OS on top of it.
>>
>>62348526
NT has a registry
>>
>>62346075
Consumer computers use it. 95% of servers (the things we depend on) are Linux.
>>
>>62348548
There is nothing inherently wrong with the registry. Windows is just too relaxed about letting programs stomp all over it, such as pajeetware adding 5000 registry keys and not even removing them when the program is uninstalled.
>>

They are even lazier. I have two dead links on my start screen, because uninstall didn't bother to remove them.

Would it be possible for the OS to diff the list of files and keys that get added and create an uninstaller for everything automatically?

Maybe self-unpacking .exes wouldn't work with it. The concept of downloading running a program to install something is the weak point.

So does GNOME, so does Enlightenment, others too, probably. The reason is that databases are thousands of times faster than plain text to process which lets you store everything ordered in one place nicely.

There is nothing wrong with that, usually you'd expect it to barf it up in local roaming though.

The place where registry usage "shines" is where there is a lot of shit, 1000+ things that need tracking, sourcing and modifying which is why GNOME has a registry for everything gnome/gtk related and there are thousands of things to tweak.

Individual applications don't necessarily need a registry or to write to one but having ones means you can make a much more cohesive system, same with powershell (ignore face-value as a user shell) tying to dotnet which allows you to do a crazy amount of things with a crazy amount of software whereas on Linux you have a thousand different pieces by different people and you just don't have such a cohesive system that glues together as nicely.

You've never had the displeasure of trying to repair a write intensive system on NTFS that hosts the OS on the same drive as the heavy handed partition.

I loaded up a liveCD and got input/output errors from shit like system32 folder metadata and user related data.
SMART was fine and good.

The bad files could not be overwritten and no form of metadata repair would allow the swiss cheese to be repaired. There was absolutely no way to overwrite or delete the bad data.
It had to be formatted altogether and reinstalled.

Yep. Use the hosts file too.

That's a really bad way to determine whether a game works.
Just check out pcgaming wiki
>>
>>62355572
not the one to bring up games though

look up fallout new vegas on steam, it's getting downboated because of windows 10 compatibility
>>
>>62355572
Windows is backward and forward compatible so yeah.
>>
>>62345784
This looks like it's Victorian styled, how quaint
>>
>>62355603
It was borked even on prior versions. The reason why so many people are downvoting it "because of windows 10" is largely because they forgot about the fixes necessary for the game to run, and haven't done it on Window s10.

GOG version comes with the fix baked in no problems whatsoever.

The Movies and TV app won't play some of my videos, do I need to download codecs or something?

Does Windows 10 offer some form of monitoring and info similar to Speccy yet?

I've never had any problems running that game on win7. Also this is a single game, I've heard of other cases mentioned on /v/.

You shouldn't have to whatsoever. It works with other video players and isn't somehow corrupt, right? https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh986969.aspx

You're either running a toaster with under 3gb ram or you're not remembering the problems. https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas

I don't know if we are looking at different comments but I haven't found any even after changing to EN only. Top comment is by one "kanys"

Right. And video that plays is pretty choppy compared to mpc-hc.
>>
>>62355738
nope, 8GiBs of ram
>>
>>62355756
You can try the VLC app in the windows store (or sideload it). If the video plays, and isn't choppy, the problem is with the Films & TV app bloat. In any case, nothing will peel me away from mpv.

I just want full functionality right out of the bat.

Windows 10S is a terrible operating system. It is Windows minus everything worthwhile about Windows.

It's just a reply to ChromeOS.

Go here and click reset and try the file again. Really shouldn't have problems or be choppy.
It would really be nice if they would separate the video player from the rest of the app though, I don't care for the store's movies. Oh and as well as supporting streaming.

That you'll probably have to go through all your settings again to change things that were reset.
Here's the rest of the list of changes. https://www.windowscentral.com/fall-creators-update

Thanks! Do I need to perform a Reset or fresh install, or anything alike incase something breaks?
>>
>>62356286
You should be able to just update with everything working fine. In case something stops working, you should exhaust typical avenues like checking for driver updates, resetting apps (as seen here >>62356021 ), and at most reinstalling that program.
A full reset or fresh install should only be used in edge cases where everything is just so fucked for whatever reason.

Overall, get your data backed up (should be doing this regularly) and the rest should be fine.

Does right click desktop refresh do anything?

the same thing that pressing refresh in any folder does (update files)
it does this automatically but sometimes it needs to be manually refreshed

When exactly? I want to drop my habit of spamming desktop refresh.

because microsoft make deals with schools to exclusively use windows, teaching tech illiteracy and a reliance on windows from a young age, that, and the anti competitive contracts they make with retailers
