Just got a new tv that uses a polarized power cable. I only have a non-polarized cable.

Can I safely modify the cable? Local electronic store is closed, I have electrical kit, and I want to check out my new TV.

>tldr PIC RELATED
Can I modify the cable on the right, to safely fit and work for sockets that only fit left?

for clarity, I am talking about the piece that is plugged into the TV. Not the wall.
>>
>>62343512
Yes. It's AC, so polarity isn't really a problem.

Just take a razor or something and slice those corners off. You'll be fine. If it were DC, you'd have to pay attention to the polarity.
>>
>>62343512
Its AC. There's no such thing as polarisation. Either way will work

Thanks,
I had a feeling that was the case and feel like a brainlet for asking
>>
>>62343624
Better to ask than blow some kit up. It's AC man. Don't fuck with it unless you're sure.
>>

>>62343548
you're wrong, one side is phase, the other is neutral, they're not always interchangable
if the device uses a polarized power socket, don't fuck with it
>>

Nigger the fucking wall end of the cord is reversible, go pretend to be smart elsewhere.
>>
>>62344555
the wall connector on the right has a flared end on one pin

..and for the first time in my life, I have realised one pin on US power points is slightly wider than the other. It's not just shock, it's confused shock.

Crawling back under rock etc..
>>
>>62344590
i'm not even american and i knew that

one pin carries the AC power (line/phase), and the other is neutral (0V), some basic things like heaters and motors won't care which is which, but more complex circuits do care, so don't mix them up
>>
>>62344619
if someone is confused about what the pins actually carry, for 110vac 60hz, it's;
line/phase: varies between +170v and -170v, at a rate of 60hz, coupled with a 0v reference, it averages out to 110v
neutral: 0v
>>
>>62344739
small correction: +/-170v is the peaks for 120v, 110v is +/-156v peaks
