Retro Thinkpad will be garbage edition

IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Previous thread:

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook, GETAC's,Toughbooks).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN HP Elitebook (2570p, 8770W, 2170p), Dell Latitude/Precision (E6430, E6440, E7440) and P, T, X, and W SERIES if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

Recommended original IBM design models:
T60, T61, X60, X61, 860, Transnote, PC110
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I bought a T420 off ebay and it has an HDD with it, it should be arriving Tuesday. Will I be able to put an SSD in it immediately or do I have to get an adaptor or something? All laptop drives are 2.5"but HDDs can be taller sometimes, right? I want to get an optical to HDD adaptor to swap out my DVD drive but I'm concerned the SSD won't fit in the main drive slot. I'd rather not have the SSD in the optical adaptor because occasionally I do want to use a DVD drive for things.

Seriously, why are the price of used macs so inflated? You can get a very decent ThinkPad for very low shekels on eBay with a bit of luck and patience but macs always sell at much higher prices than their actual worth.

People will literally pay 500+ shekels for a 4+ year old macbook air with shitty 1440x900 TN panel and 128GB of non upgradeable SSD.
A Thinkpad of the same age with the same initial cost would sell for 250 tops.

>>
>>62341495
I've been using a T420 since release and it's just been the perfect laptop for me, I have yet to feel the need to buy a new laptop. It's not too big, not too small, feels great, runs great. My T420 has held up perfectly despite over 6 years of use. I bought like bare minimum model back when I first bought it but I was a poor ass student and over the years I've upgraded it incrementally.

Mine currently has an i7-2620M, 16GB ram, 120GB SSD + 500GB HDD, 900p screen (Missed my chance to get the 1080p mod sadly). I've replaced the touchpad sticker once because in college I used to let people use my laptop all the time and it got worn out eventually because they're fucking plebeians with greasy Indian hands and don't know how to use the glorious nipple. Other than that, still pretty good shape.

Once I got my first SSD, my laptop is still super responsive and fast. What exactly do the new laptops offer anyway in performance? Unless you're gaming or shit like, I've never felt like my laptop was underpowered.

If we're being honest, the performance difference between the i5 mine came with and the i7 I eventually installed: Fucking nonexistent in day to day. The i5 is more than fine, the i7 isn't really worth it unless you're doing super CPU intensive stuff all the time because all it does is make your laptop run a little hotter for normal use. I only did it because it was a "Why not?" sort of thing.

1600x900 is totally worth it though, get on top of that.

There is no difference between the stock mobile dual core i5s and i7s, those i7s are just i5s with slightly higher clockspeeds.

The difference between the stock dual cores and upgrading to an aftermarket quad core is the real deal.

If you're really going to game on it (you shouldn't), but if you are then yes, it is worth it. It's not very good but its a lot better than Intel's shit. my t420 finally came in. I'm really surprised how snappy this thing is for an i5 with a 5200 rpm drive.

>>
>>62342221
>what's going to be faster, an mSATA ssd or a normal 2.5" ssd?
msata is capped at sata2 speeds, 2.5" ssds can do sata3 speeds. However this is irrelevant in daily usage and only matters if you transfer big files between sata3 ssds or something that handles sequential sata3 speeds.

So it's more of a
>do you want to have the option to use 3 drives?
msata
>you don't give a shit?
2.5"
>>
>>62342253
>msata is capped at sata2 speeds
I meant msata as in the t420 msata port not msata ssds in general of course.

It actually comes with 8gb, that says 4gb because it was the general details and not the specific sellers listing. Still got 16gb kit for fucking 90USD. Yes this is no longer the cheap thing its supposed to be. But hell i will still beat the thing as if it were a dollar.

idk but why, for the new cpu. Otherwise you will be stuck with shit keyboard on x220 and modding still gets you sketchy not full function old keyboard.

but on the other hand it only comes in 1600x900, you can use an ultrabay battery and you have a fully working FHD IPS mod.
>>
>>62342413
Depends on what you want. In my opinion: Yes.

The screen is worse, the battery life is a lot worse, it's harder to replace parts for it.

T420s has USB 3.0 though and it's 1lb lighter than the T420. The T420 is plenty light though.

Pick your poison.

idc, literally no one pays for any software unless its for commercial environment use obviously like someone at an animation studio needs to use a legal copy of 3dsmax etc. If you need to go super sketchy mode, go ahead and use a vm and run some distro with full disk image encryption while making sure to have the vm actually stored on a cheap flash drive, never to touch any primary storage, and use tor with noscript, https everywhere, etc, and use a vpn and proxy chain then when done being sketchy, properly dispose of flash drive, break off emmc chip(s) from flash drive board and put into bag then hammer into literal dust then pour into sewer. easy. Also ideal to hover about a library with free wifi and use that network even if vpn and or proxy(s) are in use on your end. Also also likely to use a laptop you consider disposable, only have hdd in it and eventually when you think you will not be sketchy for awhile, remove the drive and fully dispose of it also, using similar to flash drive distruction method but putting large magnet on all platter(s) after opening the drive, then hammer to a powder, unless they are metal, in which case cut very fine into pieces with bolt cutters, use blow torch on them, hammer, magnet, then put into sewer. Also dont be a retard on the places you visit and take other online precautions to concealing identity, etc.

That's an option, but I paid $35 for the thing off Craigslist so I don't really wanna drop money on an SSD. I don't have the Win7 disc (Obviously), what's the best way of getting Windows back on there?

>>62346661
alright, thanks m8. $70 should be fine, the budget for a new laptop is $1000, but im trying to save them some money. im just going to call them thinkpads though, thats what the brand says. i have no experience with older thinkpads so i dont really care if they're not as good as they used to be so long as it gets the job done. looks like even the newer models are loads better than other laptops out there though, haha. seems like 100% of laptops nowadays have garbage keyboards, and even newer thinkpads are loads better in that regard

kind of a shame you never used old ThinkPads. Maybe you'd still want to check out the T430 or T420? they're only $200 at max and docks are widely avaiable and cheap. the new T-series uses crap ultrabook CPUs and the last good one is pretty much the T440p for having a replacable CPU. of course, it probably doesnt matter to your parents what kind of CPU is installed but there hasnt been a big improvement over the last years so even a 3rd gen processor will handle all tasks thrown at them with easy. just look at us autists using 6 year old notebooks and not complaining because they're still working well. just think about it and maybe look around if there is somebody selling one in your area, you should definitely test it out. I also dont think they'd complain about the keyboard soo... save your money and get either a T420 or T430, there are plenty of youtube videos about these two so you could look at them. if they want something smaller (12" instead of 14") you could look into the X-series. The X220 is great even today and you can easily get one for $130.
>>
>>62346834
how hard is the cpu install? seems like it would be more prone to going wrong than a screen/ram/hdd replacement. im most likely going to buy an x220 or t420 for myself at some point after ive saved up some money. i dont think id be able to sell them on something older, but well see. my mother has been using a garbage dell for the last 3+ years, and id like to get her some thing modern that she'll appreciate. she also did ask for a nice keyboard (again, that dell was absolutely terrible in every way). if I could, i would buy an older model for myself first, see how it runs, and how i like it, and then get my parents a thinkpad based on what i think of it. but they need one fairly quickly, and im thinking id rather go with something newer and safe if i dont know what im getting into. on a side not, my biggest issue for myself with an older model is that im a sucker for nice displays, and i dont know how much i would like a 1366x768 resolution. but you cant go wrong with a ~$200 price range, so ill try it anyways. thanks for the helpful responses, anon

Hey lads, moving offices at work and we chucked a bunch of `shit` we decided we'd never use out, among that was an X210, T410, T400 another one in my car I forget and the guts of a T530, like it was in a box torn completely apart, but every piece was there, apparently there was something wrong with it, an ex-employee was going to fix it but never did

Anyway I've plugged the fan and power in and it spins up alright but the screens fucked, what are my chances of sacrificing a T410 display to get this bad boy operational again?
Recommendations?
Is LVDS that diverse, could maybe solder up a connector if I needed to?
Anywhere I could find pinouts? Can't seem to find them in the hardware manual.
>>
I've found a good offer for a T440p but it also has a GT730m, will that change something like CPU temps or whatever? I really don't need a dedicated GPU and I wanna know if it will influence something.
>>
>>62347002
well, I ain't stopping here brother
The only old ThinkPads that have a 1080p screen or can hold one are the W500, the T500 (if you install the 1080p panel from a W500 in it), the W510, the T510, the W520, the T520, the W530 and the T530. then there are the ones where you can install one after modding: these are the T420s and the T430s (the mod costs $50 and you'd need a panel), the X220 and the X230 (requires soldering, not practical because it uses one of the DisplayPort ports of the dock and it'll be as if it is powering two displays at all times which puts stress on the CPU and slows it down). almost everybody who has used a ThinkPad keyboard has said it's one of the greatest and even the chiclet keys are acceptable apparently. if they need something fairly quickly, just get them either that T460 or a T430, both work like a charm, they are still fast for everyday tasks and the T430 is cheaper but can't hold a 1080p screen. if your parents care about screen quality and resolution, go T460. if not, just get a T430. as for you, 720p sucks dick unless you're on 12", then its acceptable. I would get a T420s in your case, the upgrade kit is literally putting a little chip on your motherboard and connecting the display cable, thats it. you'll then have a 1080p screen, you cant upgrade the CPU but I dunno if that matters this much. if you need more info just ask, I'm here all day

>Hardware backdoors
Intel ME can only function when a payload is uploaded to it from the BIOS. Post Core2 Thinkpads have unflashable chips that check signatures of the blobs uploaded to the ME engine on boot, making an i-series Libreboot port impossible without modifications to the hardware.

Anyway, my point is that physical access to a device will always be a "hardware backdoor". Intel ME's coprocessor may have been created for evil use, but any software can be uploaded to it and used on Core2-era devices, making it more a feature ready to be used, rather than a hardware backdoor.

Oh, and as for the X40, have you audited your BIOS? It may be constantly listening for a Lenovo representative to tap in and take a look at your device. :v)

that sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. ill see about that T430. it should be enough for them, it just depends on whether they trust me to find a used product that needs upgrades and deliver it to them in one piece, haha. (what about T450, havent heard anything about those at all, and they were difficult to find on ebay when i looked). according to the thinkpad buyers guide in the OP, s series are generally not as good. is the difference enough to make me regret my purchase of a T420s over a T420? i really like the smaller form factor of the x series, but screen quality is important enough to me that i would get a T420 over an x220/230 if i cant buy a better screen for them. from what you're saying, im leaning towards a T420 right now, as i kind of want the classic thinkpad experience with the older keyboard. some anons were posting about a thinkpad where you could take out the disc drive and replace it with an hdd, would you know which one that was?

On a T60 it can be done through software, and on a XX00 series device an external SPI flasher is required. The worst thing you could do is mess up flashing on a T60 and have to buy a SPI flasher and rip it open to save it. Otherwise, it's hard to mess up really…

No, the T400 is the last supported 14" Thinkpad. However, coreboot exists if you just want a speed boost.

No need to be upset, pal. I'm not too far into the open-source black hole. The W541 stays docked, the X201t is my dd, the T60 will probably share that role eventually. The T41 needs a new battery, so it doesn't have a role.

Aliexpress, you just need to get lucky. If they say "Refurbished", that means they spray it with clearcoat to get rid of any sign of previous wear, and stick a chink trackpoint on it. My last one I got for my X200 was spray-painted but it looks new and hasn't begun to wear down so I guess I got lucky...

Shit my escape key on the x220 just stopped working for some reason. It just randomly did it on arch Linux and then on windows it did the same. I reseated the keyboard cable and cleaned it out and it worked, but only if I disabled the trackpoint.

If I enable the trackpoint all the trackpoint does is scroll for some reason, and if I press too many keys I get the noise because the esc key is registered as being pressed all the time.

Do I just need to replace the keyboard? It worked fine for several hours since I got it and just started it out of the blue.

I have 30 minutes left to try to buy a T440s with i7-4600U, 8 GB RAM, 1080p IPS display for 350 euros. Thing is, I don't know if a T440p would be even better. I've looked online and in Europe there aren't many used T440p sold, way more T440s.

Is a T440p that MUCH better over the T440s? The upgradable CPU and the full voltage CPUs are tempting, but I don't know if I should risk it over this deal.

I know I'm probably overthinking this but it's my first Thinkpad and I want to be sure.

That's not a bad purchase anon, but if you really need the extra grunt from the t440p it's damn worth it. It's also a lot sturdier, and you can throw a 9 cell in it for great battery life.

I'm in the UK and this is my first ThinkPad, I got it for £240. Swapped CPU for £115, added a spare SSD lying around and bought a new battery for £70. Not sure how it is on the continent, but over here there's a shit ton of T440 ex-business base models and not that many T440p/T440s in comparison. Ebay has a few dozen of both at the moment for me at least, they aren't rare by any means.

My friend is looking for a new laptop and I suggested looking into getting a thinkpad. He is a huge dumb idiot so now I'm stuck finding one for him.

Ideally, he would like something that is moderately powerful, not a huge form factor, and has 420 in the name.

We have been looking into a T420 but I'm tentative that the processor would be able to keep up with what he's going to be doing (Probably soccer streaming, online homework sites, youtube, real basic stuff). This wouldn't really be a big load, but he's the kind of guy to never uninstall anything, so everything will eventually stack up.

Do you guys have any other models to rec?

So literally the T420 is your only option

T420 is completely fine as a Facebook machine, even with bloat running in the background. Does he mind Ubuntu? Because that'd give him a lot more performance while being fairly normie-friendly.

It's decided then.

SSD + aftermarket quad core processor should serve him well in all his vaping adventures.
