Why the more you learn about lead free solder, the worse it gets?

I used to think the only problem is that it was harder to use, but then i learned that it cracks easily, and thermal expansions etc killed a whole lot of electronics and is probably one of the main causes of the e-waste.
And now i learned that it may also grow "whiskers" that can cause shorts.
What's next? it can strangle kitties when left unattended?

I've been using lead-free solder to recap power supplies for years. Haven't had a problem yet.
>>
>>62331018
Just don't use it. Seriously. Fuck learning about why it sucks, just realize that it does and pretend it doesn't exist.
>>
>>62331040
But everything you buy have it.
>>
>>62331018
Lead free is honestly an abomination to even exist.

>>62331061
Because meme marketing. It's horrible though.
But the way it works is great for business, your electronics aren't meant to last, else you won't buy new ones.

Sadly, the Xbox 360 opportunity to put a dent on this thing was squandered.

No, because of EU sanctions. In the long run lead free solder is easier to deal with than leaded solder as far as environmental concerns. There were also (unsubstantiated) concerns over it giving you cancer.

Companies need to sell products in the EU, and it's cheaper to just make everything with lead-free solder at that point.

Leaded solder is absolutely better as far as not cracking with thermal expansion, degrading over time, etc etc.

You shouldn't eat that shit anyways. What the fugg EU
>>
>>62332919
>thinking the only method of exposure is eating it

lead solder can degrade to dust, y'know.

bullshit
it's marketing, as in companies that forced in the sanctions in the first place, because lead free solder is cheaper and _will_ kill your devices over time
they don't give a fuck about environmental concerns

Recently I learned the solder joints in high temperature range power such as automotive are still done with lead based. The exemption is supposed to run out in 2018.

Prepare for more electric car fires.

Silver solder was probably a lobbying move by wealthy mine owners.

Not to mention that the clay lining for landfills contains more lead by several orders of magnetude.

Although, at the rate that people consume and discard their lelectronics lately, maybe this outcome is better until society adjusts to be less blatantly wasteful.

it is, for big companies, buying directly in big quantities, not for you

Where do you think it gets whiskers from?
