I think XP struck a good balance between rigid, "boxy" GUI's and modern UI's full of inconsistent special features with associated bloat, aesthetic and performant.

I'm amazed at how "clickable" buttons and other elements feel in XP, thanks to a roundedness that makes them seem to pop up. Compare that to Windows 10 where WM-provided buttons are just highlightable rectangles, behind even 95/98.
