If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN HP Elitebook (2570p, 8770W, 2170p), Dell Latitude/Precision (E6430, E6440, E7440) and P, T, X, and W SERIES if you want the Real Business Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

Recommended original IBM models:
T60, T61, X60, X61, 860, Transnote, PC110
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Get an OEM 70++, Amazon has them from Lenovo for a decent price, I'm in Canada so had to order mine through work, cost nearly 200 dollars but in my case it was worth it. Replaced my old 50++ which made a world of difference. I couldn't find a knock off battery at the rated 94Wh capacity
>>
I'm just ordered a t440 and plan on disabling the trackpoint. How does this make you feel /tpg/?
>>
>>62318539

Lenovo still sells genuine T420 9 cell 70++ batteries:

http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/chargers-and-batteries/batteries/BATTERY-ThinkPad-Battery-70/p/0A36303#

These are both reputable on amazon as well:

https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Extended-Battery-0a36303-Originals/dp/B00LLT3ANI

https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-0A36303-ThinkPad-Notebook-Packaging/dp/B0085MPGDG

Personally I would stay away from ebay. I have bought a few chinkshit batteries that had 20% or more wear on it before it hit 50 cycles.

The LG display in the T440s has a bit of a weird anti glare coating and minimal IPS-style backlight bleed. The colors on the display are fucking excellent though and it's lightyears ahead of TN panels (coming from a 2015 13" MacBook Air).
I don't know how good the AUO display is but the LG display is a pretty decent display.

I'd love to know if anyone tests it on other ThinkPads. It should flash the BIOS on other Phoenix BIOS models, I think, if you substitute your BIOS rom for 'BIOS.WPH' on the filesystem.

Looking for a cheap laptop, never checked out this general before. Looked through the buyers guide.

Why do I need this in my life now?
>>
I'm visiting the US in a month /g/. Is 3 weeks enough for me to order an x230, do a very thorough test, and get it replaced if something might be wrong?
>>
>>62319645
Because it will change how you look at laptops. Purely from a physical feel and design standpoint. Looking the IBM and early Lenovo era of ThinkPads, you find a certain design philosophy: functionality and reliability. Those two concepts mesh well into a no frills laptop that will go with you and do what you need.

The keyboard is the main attraction for many and of course the ever famous TrackPoint. It really is something that will shape how you use a computer once you use it. The TrackPoint is right under your fingers, allowing you to keep your hands on the keyboard, ready to type at a moments notice. If all you have to do is a small adjustment, it's easier to use the TrackPoint rather than move your whole hand to a trackpad. It's so good that I bought an IBM keyboard with a TrackPoint to replace my other keyboard.

Personally, I have an x200T, an x220T and a W520. The X series are decently small and light and the W series is a large but pretty powerful. What are your needs for a laptop?

The X series will probably be good enough for you. It's the smallest that Lenovo makes, at least the x230 that you're looking at. It won't have an optical drive, which you probably won't need anyway, so that helps lighten the load. The screen won't be super high res like a T series, but that's the compromise you'll have to make.
>9 cell battery brand new
I highly doubt you'll get that from ebay, which I assume is where you're looking. But you can still get a decent genuine battery with the system if you look around. Also i'm pretty sure you can find a full system(no missing parts, battery, AC adapter, with OS) for under $300. I got an x220T for $150 with everything included and free shipping so it's definitely possible.

Are you planning on getting it while you're in the US or before you come here?

Second hand shops are pretty good but you'll probably pay more since they are more than likely refurbished, The refurbished models are good since you know they have been worked on and will work once you get them, but you will be paying more for them.
>Can you give me a rough estimate on how long shipping times usually are?
It really depends on how far away the shipment is from where you are and who they ship with. Most ebay sellers use USPS which is basically the government postal system and is pretty decent. If you can get Priority Mail then you can get it in 2-3 business days(Monday-Saturday, and they will deliver on Saturday if it's in the zip code where you are) and that's pretty good. Sometimes you will get UPS or FedEx which is still pretty good unless you get ground or economy, in which case it could be like 3-5 business days. I find that most laptops come from New York or California, so if you are going there then you might get them pretty fast but it will ultimately depend on which postal service the seller uses. Just because you get a seller with free shipping, it doesn't mean that it will be slow. I've gotten free shipping with USPS Priority Mail and that's a nice bonus. Then I've gotten expedited shipping but it still took like a week to get here with no tracking updates until the day before.

I'm looking into getting something like them and all I can find with a pen and 8gb of ram within that same price range are surface devices, and those things are impossible to fix, so I'd rather not. I would, but most linux applications and DE's aren't made with pen and touch in mind, photoshop is so much better than gimp, I've yet to find any note applications for linux that have decent hand-writing support or hand-written notes to text with pen editing and the drawing application selection for linux fucking sucks.
You got gimp with a plugin, krita, and sai running through wine or playonlinux, and sai's already unreliable enough.
If I wasn't going to be using a the pen and touch, I'd likely get a T430 or something.

So with this, I've been just dualbooting, not touching linux too much since doing most things on there require compromise compared to what I've got set in windows.

Xournal is a pretty decent not taking app. Not sure if it has handwriting recognition but for handwritten notes it's really good. Plus you can export to PDF when you're done. It has pressure sensitivity and highlighting tools as well.

My x220t has a dying 6-cell, the hinge cuts into the room for the battery, so you have the flush 3-cell, and the 6-cell that sticks out. Only other battery option being the slice, but making the device nearly 2" thick while closed.
Authentic replacements are a little more expensive since they're different than the ones that go to the x220.
120gb mSATA SSD and no hard drive, it can web browse, word process, message, and play music just fine, but often the fan's always on in order to keep that smooth, too many videos or heavy webpages and the thing hovers to around 60-75c while on a flat, cool table with no obstructions. Run photoshop or anything like that and it caps itself at around 95c.
I often have it in low power mode so it'll last around 4 hours and so the fans don't rev up while in class because it can be fairly audible, even when not quiet since it's a bit higher pitched.
I asked on lenovo forums and they said to just keep it on a lower power setting or do more to keep it cool, there was nothing wrong with it getting that hot?

I've probably done maybe 3 fresh installs of windows 7, moved over to 10 every time just for the tablet support and window 10's ability to not bog down as bad when running in low power, probably a feature or something for low powered tablets or something.

I used kubuntu because unity a shit and it's essentially the same thing with a little tweaking, just without amazon and all that stuff.

I know they have wacom support out of the box, but onenote's pretty seamless when it comes to adding documents to highlight and such. And wacom support's kinda pointless if you don't have the applications to go with it.

And again, gimp and the lack of drawing programs really kills it for me. I dick around on /ic/ and drawing's enough of a hobby for me that the pen's as important as dedicated graphics to someone who wants to game.

I'd never get a 2-in-1 if it didn't have a active digitizer.
Which is why I'm asking about if there's any alternatives to the yoga 12/14, they're at least intel 4th gen+, second gen i5's just too old and impractical for my uses.

Also what can I do about the mouse buttons before replacing the whole keyboard? It tried bending them and broke a connector on one, but that didn't affect much. It makes it slightly easier to use but they still get stuck and squeak a ton. I cleaned under them and took them out and back on a few times as well.
>>
>>62322870
I already said krita, it's really kinda bloated, not too bad on better computers, but the brush engine is something I'm not a fan of. Adobe's brush engine, clip studio paint, and corel are all MUCH better.

Other than that, on linux, it seems like the only other alternatives are gimp with some plugin, and sai run through wine or playonlinux or something like that. I tried sai on there, but even on windows, sai's reliability's flaky, running it through those didn't help much in that regard.
Trust me, I tried to use kubuntu as my daily OS for my laptop, but the alternatives to the specific programs in my use-case scenario just aren't as good as you can get otherwise, hence why I switched to dualboot.

I just put electrical tape on the bottom of them so that they press down every time and I don't have to press so hard to get them to work. It makes the right button work guaranteed, as opposed to half the time.

I ordered an x220, I hope the keys on that aren't as bad as this.

100% worth it all the time, every time. Once you put in an SSD you'll never ever want to go back. Boot times, program loads and shutdown times are infinitely better than an HDD. Plus it's a lot lighter and better on battery life.

When you say "cheap", how cheap is "cheap"? Capacity will be the main factor in that. With that being said, I've bought 3 Crucial MX300 SSDs and I like them.
>>
>>62327281
i already have an SSD in my main meme machine but damn, i don't want to shell out like a $100 on an SSD when i'm getting the laptop for $40. Capacity doesn't matter to me at all, can be 20gb can be 10gb.

Well if you're really trying to jew it up, try this
>https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Endurance-Free-download-SP060GBSS3S60S25AE/dp/B01M2UUACN/ref=sr_1_8?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1504938133&sr=1-8&keywords=ssd
I wouldn't really go with non-name brand SSDs but this one has a lot of good reviews and if you're just gonna put Linux on it, it should be enough room for it and whatever else you wanna do.
>>
>>62327299
You can easily find a 64GB SSD for under $40. Amazon has several under $30.

Hands down best upgrade you can make for instant amazing speed ups. Also if you're filling up your memory and using swap it's like 20x faster there too, an end to thrashing.
>>
>>62327349
No 900p is the pretty much the best you're getting from most sellers. 1080p can be added later if you've got the bux.
>>
>>62327349
You're fallen for the price meme. A lot of people here are saying how low they've gotten for their ThinkPads but in reality normies have been getting keen on the older ThinkPads and are realizing they are actually worth something. So they are raising their prices slowly, except if you get a completely stripped model with no HDD, RAM, battery, AC adapter, etc. In reality when people say they got theirs for $40, they spent more on than that because they had to get whatever replacement parts they needed to, like all of the stuff I listed above. In reality if you get a complete system, you'll probably spend far less than trying to find all of the missing parts and buying them separately.

If you got everything for $140, I think that's pretty good. 900p is clear enough for a 14" screen.
>>
>>62327403

>>
>>62327490

sorry britbong, didn't know you were across the pond. Well type in SSD in your local version of Amazon and find something similarly priced. Mostly just look at the reviews and if it's got over 100 reviews and maintains at least a 4 star rating, you can be sure that's a safe bet. Always read the reviews of course and see if it appeals to you.
>how do I know which ones are compatible
That's pretty easy. SATA drives are pretty much backwards compatible from SATA I to II to III. The all have the same physical connection, only the actual speeds are different. But since you have an X200, it only uses a SATA II connection. But any SATA III drive will work perfectly fine. Just make sure it's a 2.5 inch drive and you'll be golden.

I'd pay a grand for a working PPC Thinkpad with AIX media.

The Transnote frequently goes for more but it's not as rare. Some day this shit will be worth actual money, I've justified my Thinkpad pile to my wife as an investment.

She's a very gracious woman.
>>

Well I was speaking more about the X, T, W series of laptops more than the older IBM ones that are more collectors items. But soon even those will become collectors items if in great condition
>>
>>62327595
Yep, I saw it happen with Powerbooks. Used to be you could get a 12" G4 for $25, now they're considerably more. I have 15" and 17" G4 PBs but want a 12" as well.

I also collect Apple IIs but not the ones that are pricey right now, for similar reasons. I also have a few Compaqs (original clean-room PC clone) which I hope to restore, they have cracked cases but I have a secret technique for healing them.
>>
>>62327625
After looking at ThinkPads for so long, it's really strange to look at anything else, especially PowerBooks. What makes you collect them? Do you plan to resell them someday or just like to have the collection? I'm kind of starting to get a collector's itch. I got three ThinkPads within a month.

Ye. I got my i5 X220 with 8GB RAM for ÂŁ85 over here without hard drive and a 9 cell that got 30 minutes if I was lucky. IPS display but had some temp burn in issues if it had any UI elements stay on screen for too long. It also had quite bad white marks on screen. I've since bought:

1 keyboard -ÂŁ15
120GB mSATA SSD - ÂŁ40
OEM 9 cell - ÂŁ60
New IPS - ÂŁ55

Screen started giving out eventually. Keyboard RMB stopped working properly.

There have also been some other things like rubber feet, middle mouse cap and new trackpoint nubs.

So that brings the total to around ÂŁ255 for a full powered X220 running like new for 9 hours with a fresh screen and keyboard.

m-muh ÂŁ85!1 heh
>>
I'm very confused as to what display to buy for my t450. It seems that the 1366x768 res model can have single channel, so it won't work for FHD panels. Then there's also sellers with fake models apparantly. Does anyone know if it'll work and where to buy?

There is no official 1080p option. You can put one from the T440 in but that requires some modding.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Replacing_T430_screen_with_a_better_one

I'd stick with 900p though. At 14 inches that's the sweet spot because it needs no scaling. If you need scaling you can throw Windows 7 and Linux out the window.

uhhhhnnnnnnnnnnn

Unfortunately I know this to be true as experienced first hand.

On a tangential note, is it possible to remap them in anyway? I have an X220 but I'm buying a new machine with the new keyboard sometime in the future. I use these keys every single day.
>>
>>62330878
Check archive of last couple of threads. An anon posted a picture with instructions on how to unlock password from a T420 BIOS. This gist is you need to short a circuit when it's booting.
>>
>>62330878
What model? Some anons here know how to reset the BIOS. You could even flash an original or modded BIOS via hardware (Raspberry Pi)
>>
>>62330963
>>62330972
I know about all that. It's a T420 so disassembly is harder. The PI mod costs over $100
>>
>>62330993
Then what do you want? There's a solution but you're not prepared to do it. One of the main reasons to get a Thinkpad is because it's not a puzzle box to tease apart. Just put yer balls on and do it. It's not going to be intractably difficult.

If the guy doesn't accept returns, what do you have to lose? If you try to sell it with the BIOS locked you're not gonna get half the price a proper T420 should cost, and if you don't tell the buyer it's locked you're ripping another guy off the same way you got fucked with. Disassembly isn't hard. I don't know why you would need a guide. Take all screws out and you're done. Take some photos so you know which part belongs where.
