This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

I'm absolutely in love with this 18 carat, rose gold TAG Heuer Carrera watch purchased from the beautiful city of Perth. Made with sapphire infused glass that only diamond can scratch, I've spoiled myself with this gorgeous timepiece. The calibre 16 movement has been crowned as the most successful automatic chronograph movement ever produced, completely handmade by man. It is also my very first day date watch and it will be interesting to see if it becomes an important feature that Will depend on over time. I hope you all enjoy this watch as much as I do

One must first love himself before properly love others, I have a gf and if I didn't I think I'd have the same amount of watches or maybe one more, because watches are already a part of who I am.

Are you going to spend the money to have that serviced? I don't see much sense in buying a vintage Seiko 5 unless you can service it yourself (and even then you'd have to value your time as being worthless).
>>
>>62315243
even if it hasn't been serviced how many times do i realistically need to service this? was planning to ask the watch repair shop guy if it has been serviced or not before purchasing. and my original question was about the model.
>>
>>62313811
nigger tier
>>
>>62315210
It's not that bad. It comes in midsize and ladies' sizes so it's not garish, but still says fuck you.
>>
>>62315243
The model is an entry level Seiko from the 1970s and is fine, as far as that goes. If the shop has serviced it recently, it's fine for $29, but I certainly wouldn't spend the money to have the watch serviced in ~5-10 years when it needs it, as a service would cost several times what the watch is worth.
>>
>>62315585
is servicing the same as regulate? the local Rolex dealer charges about $29 to regulate any automatic
>>
>>62315641
No. Servicing involves disassembling the movement, cleaning all the parts, checking to make sure no parts need replacing, then correctly lubricating and re-assembling the movement, and then adjusting and regulating the timing.

The typical price for a mechanical movement service from an independent mechanical watch repairer (they're called watchmakers) will cost at least $150 and needs to be done roughly every 5-10 years (probably closer to every 10 on a Seiko 5).
>>
>>62315641
Regulating is getting the watch to as close as +/-0 sec a day as possible. They might regulate it to either one position or several, you will have to ask.

Servicing is taking the watch apart, cleaning it and reassembling it. May or may not include a regulating. You'll have to ask.

This post embodies a lot of the reasons I don't post in what should be communities for my hobbies (but I do comment!). It's a nice piece, enjoy it! Luxury is a feeling, an experience. As long as you get that feeling, then who cares. I've been working for a decade and my first treat was much more modest than this and to me, still feels luxurious. So by my standards, you're doing ok!

And yet that binman is going to take out a 25k loan for a 10+ year Maserati, which is the luxury car equivalent of a Seiko SARB, and bankrupt himself trying to keep it on the road. This is exactly why bogans shouldn't have disposable income.
>>
>>62318279
>And yet that binman is going to take out a 25k loan for a 10+ year Maserati, which is the luxury car equivalent of a Seiko SARB
That is an idiotic analogy. The 10+ year old Maserati has extremely high running costs, it would more like buying a vintage water damaged Zenith El Primero (or something like it) for cheap and then having to spend a fortune on restoration and maintenance.
>>
>>62316879
You're probably right. Maybe a nice VC small seconds later on.
>>
>>62318330
Yeah in terms of maintenance the El Primero is a batter analogy. I meant in the sense that Maseratis , and especially the Quattroporte, are considered total shitters by anyone that actually knows cars. A god damn 7 series, S Class, or even a 911 from the same era would give him less grief than a Maserati, and would actually make him look like he knows how to live a flaky gold leaf gilded lifestyle.

At that price point the main automatic options I know of are the panda Sea-Gull 1963 and one of the "Alpha" speedmaster homages which have the same movement. Going quartz opens up other options though.

ok thanks, again during viewing the watch was running smoothly, the watchmaker brought it out from his drawer sealed in plastic after i asked if he had any vintage Seiko. so does this mean for any new Seiko 5 i'd have to service or regulate every 5 years?
>>
>>62324273
Also, vintage 61xx Grand Seiko models are not cheap anymore, and vintage 61xx and 62xx GS movements can be a bit finicky and tending to need donors for parts way more often (and at greater expense) than a 5740C Lord Marvel.

Save it and give it to your kid on his graduation. Or ask if he has the receipt. If you tell him it doesn't fit you and you won't use it, I would wager he would be happy to return it and get you something you would actually use and be able to enjoy.

Pretty good overall. Rolex is somewhat falling out as the Chad brand though. Hublot and TAG seem to be the "in" brands at the gym, club, etc.

The Daytona works good in this meme though because "The Chad Cosmograph" sounds really funny and I don't think any other brand has a fancy name for their chronographs like Rolex does. Could be used for an alternative "the virgin stopwatch" / "the chad cosmograph" though.

seiko is new to the business.

citizens' eco drive and casio's tough solar are much better.

it beats mechanicals because it wont stop if you dont use it, and its much less delicate and can handle a few knocks.

it beats traditional quartz because there's no need to change the battery (not for 5-10 years anyway), hence the back does not need to be opened.

In the last year I have seen at least 5 skx007 or 009s, and only two of those were at the beach. I've only run into one other guy with an Alpinist though. There are also a couple people with seamasters that I run into fairly regularly at the gym or library. Maybe you should leave the house more.

The skx007 wears stupidly small, the 013 shouldn't be better until somewhere in the 6.x range.

Not stupidly small but fine actually. And I agree with the 6.x, I'm a 6.5 inch wristlet and chose the 013 which fits me nicely.

Poorfag here considering to buy a nice watch.

Watch looks even better than pictures show--random people constantly want to look at it. I surf and I have owned some pricey watches that were allegedly WR to 100 meters...after 4 hours in the water they were destroyed. Now I have three Venom watches and they are (for me, at least) indestructible. I've run over them, I've accidentally washed and dried them with a load of laundry (watch was in a pocket), I've surfed and dived for hours without any issues from any of the watches. Last week I was in a diamond shop that also sells only really high end watches (Piaget, Hublot, Piguet, A. Lange & Sohne, etc.) and, after asking to look at the watch, the sales people thought that I paid around $10,000 for it. When I told them $375 they were astonished. I just smiled and said that the only use I would have for any of their watches would be to sell one and buy a beach house.

>>
>>62339574
The price of new ETA 2824-2 watches is plummeting. My bet is that ETA have outsourced even more of their components to Chinese manufacturers.

And with Obris being an unashamed Chinese brand, you may as well just buy a fucking Seagull.

You're paying a $300 premium for the privilege of your chink parts being assembled by a robot in Switzerland.

I wonder why those Explorers sold out, and afterwards, Oris...I mean OBRIS's prices went up.

Really boggles the brain. It's as if they released a low-margin watch in limited numbers to gain brand recognition, and then proceeded to machine the EXACT SAME INNER CASE to different exterior dimensions, and add $150 to the price.

Oh, they also rated some of them to 200m, and others to 300m, to create a stratified appearance for their range of products.

You know, I've never met a Chinaman called "Morgan".

>all these specific things for this watch
Open it up to include more Chinese/Jap mass produced movements and you can find plenty that tick every one of those boxes. Open your specifics to include replicas/homages you get even more. The more you narrow down your specifics to describe a single watch you don't really open up any alternatives but the single watch.
Tell your boss you have finished with here for the day and do something more productive.
