I'm not familiar with available cleaned BIOS for the x230t, but the FRU's I was looking at were 60Y3303 and 60Y3305, labeled as Foxconn and LiteOn. They hook in to the daughter card connector. Not sure what the chipset would be in either of them, which is partly why I asked. Some ebay postings have photos of ones with BCM92070 stickers.

X201 USB flash drive bootable image for BIOS whitelist removal
6.4MiB
https://mega.nz/#!jpY10JoZ!rCnxS0yg3YB3l5Hcs4SbQC-XVqhPf4v98Y3SMlMOpXM
Replacing BIOS.WPH should let you use it with other models using a Phoenix BIOS without an optical drive. I made it by extracting the filesystem from the El Torito bootable CD Lenovo provided for official BIOS updates and putting it in a subdirectory on a relatively barebones FreeDOS install in QEMU. After changing FDCONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to stop it from loading anything into high memory/stop it from using any extenders of any kind, I successfully flashed the BIOS on my X201 and removed the whitelist without a Windows install.

lovin' dat soft rim.

If I get a 1366x768 screen on a T420 is it possible to swap in a 1600x900 screen?

So you can't see the name stamped/pad printed/whatever onto the largest IC on the card?
If the cards were both offered with the x230t, they probably have about the same capabilities.

Hey /tpg/, my x230 should be coming in the mail tomorrow. This is probably the last day of use for the shitty Toshiba laptop I'm posting from right now. Was wondering if it should be easy enough to pull the hard drive from the Toshiba and put it into the x230. It's still in good condition according to Crystaldiskinfo and 128 gb of an SSD is BARELY enough.
>>
>>62309174
Yes, but if you have winblows it'll throw a shit-fit about being 'unlicensed'.
Also it might BSOD due to different drivers/chipsets/whatever.

If you run a decent OS (a linux distro), it'll work just fine. Speaking from experience.
>>
>>62309209
more info:
with windows HDD swaps, very similar hardware usually works fine.
Make sure both are agreeing in the BIOS about what HDD access mode to use (AHCI or "IDE").

For any novices to /tpg/ here is a quick run down

>xx20 series ie x220, t420, t/w520 are the last models with the IBM 7 row design keyboard
>can coreboot t420/520 to get ivy bridge CPU support
>can stick alienware IPS screen into t420 albeit the panel is semi rare now
>x220 can have an IPS screen to replace it's god awful TN panel
>xx30 series (t430, x230, t530 etc.) and up require whitelisting for components i.e battery, wifi card
>x220 libreboot coming this year
>you can replace xx40 series (t440, x240, t540) trackpads with their xx50 series counterparts (t450, x250, t550)

Battery advice bro here.

First thing to remember about Li-Ion batteries is that they can only endure a certain number of "full" cycles before degrading below their specified capacity enormously, but what is a "cycle?" A cycle is defined as the *equivalent* of a full charge and discharge. If you charge your battery all the way and then drain it all the way, this is one cycle. If you charge it all the way, drain it to 90%, charge, and drain back to 90% you'd need to do this ten times for a "cycle." However, if you drain a battery all the way every time you might only get 500 cycles before it's degraded substantially. However, if you drain it to 50% and recharge each time, you can easily get 1500 cycles out of the exact same battery, and if you only drain it to 90% you can get over 5000 cycles.

OK, on to refreshing. First, take your battery and charge it all the way. Then drain it all the way until your computer turns off, and charge it all the way again. Take it out of the machine and leave it for a couple days or maybe a week, then charge it again without draining it first. It will have partially self-discharged a bit. Then drain to no lower than 40%, and recharge it. Do this a couple times, resting the battery for a couple days each time. It will massively boost your capacity.

If the above didn't refresh your battery quite a bit, you can do the more extreme procedure of putting it into a plastic bag, evacuating the air, and freezing it for a few days. Then take it out of the freezer, whack it really hard a number of times with the palm of your hand, and let thaw to room temperature before taking it out of the bag. Try the above procedure again. Make sure to monitor your computer for a couple hours after you insert the previously whacked and frozen battery in case of fire, if you get too overzealous you could damage the pack.

Bro, sandy bridge doesn't have a latch, only is available with a touchpad, and is 16:9. You're thinking Westmere/Nehalem.
All I'm saying is, your choice is shit. Hell, Sandy Bridge is even acceptable if you don't care about having good hardware anywhere else in the computer. Ivy Bridge is just a more power-efficient die shrink.

For anyone wondering about batteries you'll run into 3 types of batteries:

1. Genuine batteries manufactured by 3rd parties and sold by Lenovo and authorised 3rd parties
2. Genuine batteries but the enclosure has been opened and the old worn battery cells removed and replaced with inferior cells then sold on ebay, amazon etc.
3. Straight up knock off with sloppy tolerances, potentially causing system failure/BSoD over time due to fluctuating voltages.

For anyone wondering about chargers:

The design and build quality changed numerous times as they sourced from different manufacturers. If you really want a genuine one then either buy it from Lenovo otherwise you're SOL and it's practically impossible to tell a knock off from a genuine one as they are all manufactured in the same facilities. You get knock offs because when Lenovo or company X ends contract with company Y they'll often just pump out the last of what they can make which is usually in the tens of thousands then sell it to local buyers or local buyers will pay them on the side to make x amount of them. If you're truly worried then get a multimeter even a cheap one will do and measure it's tolerances. A shoddy one will either have poor tolerances or it will catch fire one day.

because it still physically sits under your palm while using the trackpoint and the buttons still click under it. Also, the rough texture on the touch surface is BS.

>>
>>62317017

People buy dead genuine batteries and replace the cells in it then resell it as a genuine new battery. Practically every amazon or ebay seller selling xx30 series or older batteries on ebay or amazon are selling "refurbished" genuine batteries where they remove the battery cells and stick in very inferior cheap cells then lists it as genuine new.
>>
>>62317074
Ah, OK.
I re-celled my own battery once and I used the proper cells.

>>62317045
I can't find IPS with i7. I asked if I should go i7 or i5 with IPS.

I asked a specific question. I did not ask whether or not I should get a x230. I've already weighed the pros and cons of various models and decided what I would like for myself and I do not suffer the same level of autism of what does or does not constitute a thinkpad.

Unfortunately no, it's soldered. You aren't missing out on much though, the i5 and i7 variants for the X220 and X230 both have the same features including virtualisation the only difference is clock speed and i7 having more 1MB more cache (only helps in video encoding really). The cost of an i7 model over an i5 model really doesn't warrant the negligible performance increase, you will be better served with SSD/More ram.

I didn't think they'd be that hot considering the amount of airflow they've got in those huge cases.

>>62317961
Right, I wouldn't try to upgrade to a quad core in any of those three. I'd probably just aim for the best chip set available and then invest in a t4xx or w5xx series if I really wanted to go quad core.
>>
>>62317110
Get an i7, get an IPS panel, and put it in the i7.

I've seen a handful of FHD mods for the x220/x230

Some done by the 51nb guys. I've seen piecemeal explanations on other FHD mods on how it's done but I can't get the full picture.

Has anyone did a mod themselves? Or aggregated some information on how to do this?

Dell XPS > Thinkpads
>>
>>62317892
I'd chose the 4800. You can always limit the TDP of the 4800 to 30w, 37w or whatever but you can't get extra performance from the 4712 if you need it.
>>
>>62318071
write it in fucking emacs jesus christ
>>
>>62318073
Sure in some aspects
>>
>>62318078
Honestly man it was just to get the main brunt of the benefits from quad cores while retaining some power benefits from the lower models. So if I can do that without 4712 that works. Is this easily done?
>>
>>62317892

Two things.
One. Your font choice is horrible.
I recommend Unifont, or my new favorite:
https://github.com/wyatt8740/ibm3161-font

Two. the X220 should be retrofittable with USB 3.0 via an expresscard. My X201 was, anyway.
>>
>>62317936
A Linux distro, for fuck's sake.
Windows is cancer.
>>
>>62318103
then get the cheapest quad core you can find and limit the tdp to 37w, ez
>>
>>62318084
>>62317989

here you do it in your format preference:

>xx20 series ie x220, t420, t/w520 are the last models with the IBM 7 row design keyboard
>can coreboot t420/520 to get ivy bridge CPU support
>can stick alienware IPS screen into t420 albeit the panel is semi rare now
>x220 can have an IPS screen to replace it's god awful TN panel
>xx30 series (t430, x230, t530 etc.) and up require whitelisting for components i.e battery, wifi card
>x220 libreboot coming this year
>you can replace xx40 series (t440, x240, t540) trackpads with their xx50 series counterparts (t450, x250, t550)>T440p can take up to 2133MHz DDR3L RAM>X201 can also have an AFFS panel, which is pretty much as good as an IPS. The AFFS panel came with the X201 tablet.>The xx30 series can accept xx20 keyboards
>i7 xx20s usually have USB 3.0
>The battery whitelist and key differences with the classic keyboard can be sorted out with thinkpad-ec on github, which also requires no special hardware
>removing the wifi whitelist for xx30 series requires special hardware
>while removing the wifi card whitelist and fast ram support can be done without special hardware on the xx20 series you still need hardware to flash coreboot and USB 3.0 is only available via Expresscard USB 3.0 that runs hot with lower speeds
>if all you need and is a better integrated in gpu but don't want to deal with things like coreboot, the xx30 is a better choice
>but if you're planning on hackintosh or just changing out the wifi card for what ever reason, the xx20s are easier
>>
>>62318134
That's the plan then. Can I limit this in BIOS?

I didn't get a response yesterday so I just have to ask again because I'm all out of ideas.

If it has an esata combo port then you need to put the usb drive in there, I had the same problem trying to get my W510 to boot on a USB drive, only port that worked was the esata/USB2 combo. The powered usb port and USB3s wouldn't work.

a) He has CSM turned off in the bios settings

So i need some advice here.
My old eee1005HA has finally become too slow to do university work or any basic office stuff and i need a new small laptop.

I looked around and what caught my eye were a new Lenovo ThinkPad E31-80 and x230.

The E31-80 has
>Intel® Core™ i3-6100U @ 2,3GHz
>4GB ram
>500+8GB SSHD
>2 cell Li-Ion battery (apparently up to 5 hours)
>1080p 13" display

The x230 has
>Intel i5-3320M 3.3GHz(guessing turbo boosted)
>8GB ram
>250GB SSD
>1366x768 12.5" display
>apparently 9 hours of battery life

They both are just under 500€. The x230 is slightly used, which means it was probably a rental pc for a company that was sold off after the rent period ended and refurbished by the store. there are also an x220 and x240 in the same price range, also refurbished, but with 4gb ram and Intel i5-2540M 3,3GHz and Intel i5-4300U 2,9GHz respectively.

The most important aspects for me are reliability, battery life and portability.
>>
>>62320557
Thanks!

500€ is way too overpriced for x230, and E series is plastic garbage.
