Second place is xbps, followed by pacman

You don't need any fancy 'package managers' - just get the exe's from download.com and you are golden.

where's the source code?
right.
Anything that isn't portage.

FedEx.
They can a package half way around the world in 2 business days.
>>62292393
Wrong.
They couldn't get a package 145t in 2 weeks.
>>62292421
Wrong.
They'll lose your shit and take thrice as long as FedEx.
>>62295140
Windows has several package managers...
Windows Update is probably the worst package management system to ever exist in any universe.
Especially the new version for Win8/10.
SCM is also pretty fucking garbage, considering how much it costs to get the supporting infrastructure setup (legally)
>>62292259

over the next 5 or so years, everything else mentioned in this thread is going to start [poorly] implementing [subsets of (i.e. useless)] what nix and guix offer right now
that we ever didn't do it like this retrospectively seems absolutely retarded
i honestly feel really bad for anyone who hasn't yet discovered functional package management and want to help you all step up
this is the bright beautiful future and you'll understand as soon as you give it a try
>>62295718
But (regarding USPS) they're the only ones that actually have strict and enforced package tampering privacy laws that are heeded.
They are in all unironic seriousness the largest drug trafficker of all time - It's the vast majority of their business today and the only thing keeping them alive.

`apt cache` Wow, amazing. I must be a genius or something.

Then why do tutorials use apt-get?
>>62292259
pacman has the best syntax, this comes from a Debian user.
fun fact, MSYS2 uses pacman syntax.
>>62296108
>>62296154
apt is a front-end, and traditionally isn't always installed by default.
True sysadmins use apt-get/apt-cache/dpkg to do their package management.

I don't know if it's apt's fault or Ubuntu's but I always get a

Portage/Emerge
Homebrew is actually pretty good. Apk (from Alpine) is very good too. Also heard good things about xbps. BSDs' pkg is also good.

Lisp and GNU.
It's not like you even have to replace one with the other anyway.
brew
docker
>>62297717
Those are not advantages.
ml-style >>>>> lisp
And nix uses linux standard technologies, such as systemd.
guix is just for the sake of "MUH GNU SYSTEM"
>>62297717
Plus there's nixops. And an order of magnitude or two more packages.
Apparently whatever NixOS and GuixSD have going on for them is pretty cool. I use Fedora as my daily and dnf has never given me any issues.
But xbps and portage are also really fun.
>>62292269
Even though the tool itself is shitty, nodejs dependency management is god tier. Virtualenv sucks, bundler sucks, why can't good languages have sensible, project specific dependency resolution?
>>62292522
Never heard of it?
You kill yourself. Babybuntu.
>>62292789
Unironically this
I personally prefer makepkg and pacman for ease of use but will not dispute this
Ports is very nice though
>>62296975
That's Ubuntu checking for updates in the background. If you go long enough without updating you'll get a notification that there are updated packages.

>>62295718
Bullshit.
FedEx took a week to a week and a half to deliver from the west coast. Same origin, USPS takes two to three days at a lower price.
FedEx tried to knock and run on a large package twice. The second time I was waiting and caught that sneaky fuck after he left a note. USPS kicks FedEx's ass for continental US deliveries.
>>62298301
>>62298449
It's so shitty that they've been wanting to program a new package manager (sol) for like 2 years now. Too bad it's a meme distro with only one real dev (ikey). He's also trying to switch Budgie to use Qt etc. etc. etc.
No wonder Solus is shilled so hard, they really lack devs
>>62299122
This
FedEx is ass and anyone that uses it doesn't deserve my business. Anything is better than FedEx.
