Reposting since I posted it right at the end of the last thread.

First time posting on /g/ in about a year and a half, but I just wanted to leave this somewhere.
I made a USB-bootable image to flash the X201 BIOS (in this case, the included BIOS ROM has the wireless card whitelisting removed). I don't have Windows on my X201, and I don't have the dock with the optical drive (yet), so this was the only way I managed to flash my BIOS. It worked for me, so I wanted to share.

I basically extracted the FAT partition from the lenovo-supplied bootable ISO image, did some tweaking, and shoved it all into a FreeDOS 1.2 installation I made under QEMU. I had to prevent it from loading any extensions, which I kind of hacked together in FDCONFIG.SYS (FreeDOS's CONFIG.SYS), and then tweaked autoexec.bat a little.
I first tried to get the El Torito image to boot from a flash drive without luck. DOS isn't my specialty (unix is), and I haven't used it in about 15 years.
Anyway, I was able to boot it and flash my BIOS successfully.
To put it on a flash drive, unpack it and then run:
cat image.img > /dev/sd(Whatever-Your-Device-Node-Is)
sync

Then you can remove it or reboot or whatever.

TL;DR flash your X201 BIOS with only a USB drive.
Download (6.4MiB):
https://mega.nz/#!jpY10JoZ!rCnxS0yg3YB3l5Hcs4SbQC-XVqhPf4v98Y3SMlMOpXM

It should also work for other ThinkPads, though you'll want to replace the BIOS.WPH file.
You can mount the image with something like:
modprobe loop
mount -o loop,offset=32256 image.img

(the FAT16 partition starts at the 32256th byte, or the start of sector 63)

Also I have come to the realization of just how small this stickie is, at 3" length. Especially after putting one on my desktop. They're perfect for a laptop or smaller devices but if you plan on getting this for a desktop PC you should know that when I restock these I will be making them bigger, probably 4" long, maybe 4.5".

X200 if you want the small size and 16:10 screen with no touchpad
T420s if you want something bigger with an upgradeable CPU and better graphics chipset. Most (all?) of the X series have CPUs soldered down.

What do you do with Windows? Same stuff, you can even run most Windows software directly, with the exception of SJW-era gaymes.

People like Thinkpads because used ones are cheap and plentiful, they can be fixed easily, spare parts are easy to come by, and they have features like hot-swap bays, multiple batteries, docking stations with PCIe ports, etc.

I'm using it on my X220T right now! I did figure out one way to do it that might work for you but it is a bit slower than the button. First thing to remember about Li-Ion batteries is that they can only endure a certain number of "full" cycles before degrading below their specified capacity enormously, but what is a "cycle?" A cycle is defined as the *equivalent* of a full charge and discharge. If you charge your battery all the way and then drain it all the way, this is one cycle. If you charge it all the way, drain it to 90%, charge, and drain back to 90% you'd need to do this ten times for a "cycle." However, if you drain a battery all the way every time you might only get 500 cycles before it's degraded substantially. However, if you drain it to 50% and recharge each time, you can easily get 1500 cycles out of the exact same battery, and if you only drain it to 90% you can get over 5000 cycles.

OK, on to refreshing. First, take your battery and charge it all the way. Then drain it all the way until your computer turns off, and charge it all the way again. Take it out of the machine and leave it for a couple days or maybe a week, then charge it again without draining it first. It will have partially self-discharged a bit. Then drain to no lower than 40%, and recharge it. Do this a couple times, resting the battery for a couple days each time. It will massively boost your capacity.

If the above didn't refresh your battery quite a bit, you can do the more extreme procedure of putting it into a plastic bag, evacuating the air, and freezing it for a few days. Then take it out of the freezer, whack it really hard a number of times with the palm of your hand, and let thaw to room temperature before taking it out of the bag. Try the above procedure again. Make sure to monitor your computer for a couple hours after you insert the previously whacked and frozen battery in case of fire, if you get too overzealous you could damage the pack.

These methods are for a used battery, a new battery might benefit from it if it was charged all the way at the factory and left to sit though.

Just bear in mind that if you completely discharge the battery to the point the computer turns off, you're losing about 1% of the original capacity each time you do that.

So I'm preparing to leave my soul behind and order an overpriced trannybooted T400 from minifree to support them. My question is this - will it be able to watch anime with MPV in HD? That is literally all I care about right now. At the moment I'm using an Acer C720 Chromebook running Arch which only has 2gb of RAM, and a joke of a processor, so a T400 should be a decent upgrade right?
If all goes well, I think I'll join the radical free software extremism movement.

Hello, lithuanian faggot here, need more advice. I had posted before asking for advice on buying a t h i c c p a d, but, sadly the offers got snatched. So, I'm eyeing a T430, 8gb ram, 500hdd, a bit worn out (the thinkpad logo on the main body is all silver), dunno about the battery, but it's the i7+nVidia model. Price is just under 300 euros. Is it worth it? I'll be going to the seller's place today to check how the battery is doing and how bad it looks in real life, but is the i7 enough to redeem how worn out it is? I think it's the i7-3220m, btw it has the 1600x900 TN panel, so screen upgrades are viable in the future. Thank you all.
>>
>>62297027
If the battery is an extended one and working then it's worth it, but keep in mind the Nvidia version has heat issues.
>>
>>62297036
It's definetely the stock 6 cell. How bad are the heat issues? Does reapplying thermal paste help it longterm, or is it just a short-term solution and it will heat up anyways? I'm going to use it on my lap most of the time, and I definetely don't want to get my thighs burned, and I need the nvs power for graphical work.

You should do your homework on mydigitalife (got tier BIOS flash into, forums, crack info, established many years) then download a clean .iso and activate if you need personalization.

Otherwise you don't even need to activate 10 to use it.

How do people use computers who don't study how to get clean soft and warez immediately? So much fun to learn, so much convenience, so why not? The only soft I ever bought was a copy of Partition Magic 4.0.

Is an IPS display important? I'm torn between a T440s with IPS or a more powerful T450. Both have similar prices (500~ euros), but the T440s is going to cost a little more also because I'm going to swap the touchpad in it, which I won't have to do on the 450.
>>
>>62299346
He didn't reply to the other anon questioning a T430 having a sandy bridge CPU. Neofetch shows different (and better) info, including the model of your computer if applicable. I could've then looked that up to see if it was a T420 or T430.

I was going to consider it, but it looks like it's just going to be a T470 with just the old keyboard and "retro" branding.

>Lenovo in charge of making an actual """retro""" ThinkPad

Meanwhile, some small Chinese company is modding the T60 to include modern components:
>15 inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1400x1050
>Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU
>32GB-DDR4 RAM
>>
>>62299448
I wouldn't go past the *20 (sandy bridge) ThinkPads. Keyboards got worse and from there many other things did as well. Similar to modern smartphones, they take away important features and comfort aspects and increase the specs each year at this point.

The T420/X220 will probably get Libreboot support pretty soon, and then they'll be the best computers to have.
>>

>>62299476
If they manage to get Libreboot on the 20 series, shouldn't it work on the 30 series too? From what I understand the fundamental problems Libreboot has with Core i CPUs is the same across all generations.
>>
>>62299492
Only in specs. I hope you're not going to say that being able to use an old keyboard with a bios mod makes it better.
>>
>>62299507
I don't know all the specifics, but I have specifically been hearing that the 20 series will be getting Libreboot support, not the 30.
>>
>>62299508

Well yeah... Duh. The keyboard is subjective. I prefer the t/xx30 keys anyway.
>>
>>62292081
delete your fucking post you absolute madman
>>
>>62299526
It's not really subjective, or rather it's not just about them being chiclet. That doesn't matter at all. They took an entire row of keys off and put a bunch of things in weird spots. It's honestly quite horrible.
>>
>>62299517
I guess that's because Libreboot has to be optimized for every CPU and board available so it's logical to first release it for 20 series and then work on 30 series, which shouldn't be too hard as soon as Core i is jailbroken.

btw do you have any idea why Libreboot is on T60/X60 but not on T61/X61?
>>
>>62299540
In your opinion. It's subjective.
>>
>>62299550
I'm only going to back down on this one because I use a 60% keyboard, and can't make myself say "less keys is obviously worse", although I will say that due to not having the function layer benefits of a 60%, a laptop keyboard having less keys is generally worse. ThinkPads were special for basically having an 80% keyboard.
>>
I need a laptop for basic office stuff and ocasional web browsing (youtube and that kind of stuff) . A thinkpad looks like a good option, but judging from the pictures they seem heavy and bulky, and i'd like to be able to fit it into my backpack and carry it with me everyday. I looked at Samsung chromebooks (inb4 DUDE BOTNET LMAO) and they seem perfect for my needs, the price is good too, however they aren't available in Europe. Any suggestions?
>>
>>62299476
But if I wanted an IPS display, wouldn't I be forced to get a T440?
>>
>>62299546
>btw do you have any idea why Libreboot is on T60/X60 but not on T61/X61?
No, never really thought about it. My best guess is a mix of popularity and importance. Libreboot is actually a somewhat recent project, I think from 2013 or so. Coreboot is a bit older, but this makes me think that newer ThinkPads were already out so they would just rather focus on those. Following that logic, why they did the T60/X60 at all is a mystery to me, but it does explain why they'd jump to the X200/T400.
>>
>>62299585
X220 and X220T can have an IPS panel. The X220T _always_ has one, so it's the safer bet. It's only 1366x768, but otherwise it's a pretty great machine even today.

Thanks man.
>>
>>62299587
I think they did the older generations because it was easier to get it working. On the T60 and X60 Libreboot can be installed by software only. No external hardware is required and that's a massive plus. Also, back then they were considerably cheaper than the T400 and X200.

Battery usually lasts me 3-4 hours. The trackpad is admittedly a bit weird, but as a mac user (I have to use a mac at work) I tap to click anyway (because all MacBook before the force touchpad had an annoying as fuck click sound). I got used to it, but I can see why lenovo didn't stick with it.
>>62298839
If you can get one, sure, go for it.
>>62299357
Beware of the T440s IPS screens. Lenovo sourced the panel from two different OEMs (LG and AUO) and the LG panel has a weird fucking anti glare coating that creates a bit of a 'spotlight effect' when you look at the display from different angles. It's still miles ahead of my old T410's 1440x900 TN panel or the 1280x800 TN panel in the MacBook Pro I use at work (2012 non retina model). A lot of people were whining about the display; to me it's not a big issue but I can see where all the hate is coming from.

My wife's son wants a laptop but I think he wold find a ThinkPad somewhat offensive since he's half black. Should I get him one of those new silver ThinkPads? I don't want him to think he's getting a black laptop because his father was black.

Why not just get a t450 anyway? What am I missing here, it seems like the t430 is nicer than the t440 and if you really want a step up then why wouldn't you get a t450?

I wanna get a jap classic keyboard for my x200 tablet How is it compared to the old keyboard? I assume you had ansi but if not, what's it like having that tiny spacebar? Do you actually use the extra buttons for kana and kanji?
>>
>>62301529
Oh god
>>
>>62301937
Because my 440p has an upgradeable cpu with quad core support and adequate cooling for it. I don't want soldered ulv 15w dual cores.

>>62301943
I just bought it because i found the weeb keyboard cheap for like $15 on ebay but the principal reason was that i can't stand ANSI after being used to the ISO enter key and my thinkpad was from the US so it came with the ANSI keyboard.

>what's it like having that tiny spacebar?
awful, your muscle memory while touch typing goes to shit

>Do you actually use the extra buttons for kana and kanji?
Yes, remapped them to prev/next and play/pause since this keyboard doesn't have dedicated media buttons like the classic keyboard. There's also two extra keys unused, one next to the backspace (making it even smaller, also messes with your muscle memory) and another next to the right shift.

I'd say don't buy it and stick with your native layout unless you have a good reason or want to run a meme setup.

>>
>>62302057
ANSI keyboards have the best enter key. Anyway, I have an x220 that I'll probably keep the ANSI keyboard on, but I want the x200 to have the jap keyboard since I probably won't use it as much. Then again I realize that my right thumb hits the enter key right under the N key almost 90% of the time I don't know if I could move it to be under the B key. But It looks so beautiful with all of the buttons. fuck

Just for my school and research work, I decided to ditch my plans for an older Thinkpad and got a brand-spanking new T460s (goddamn thing is untouched) for $525. Even has a Windows 7 downgrade. Did I do good?

I want to put Manjaro on it for now just to get started on some work I have due soon. How do I dual-boot on a pre-loaded machine? What does my partition table need to look like? Will I be nuking the Windows boot partition? Do I need to be worried about fucking with secure boot or anything?

Sorry bro, that thing's a ThinkPad in name only. You'd be better off with a ten year old Dell Latitude D630, which is closer to a thinkpad than that.

To be clear, I have no problem with chiclet keyboards in and of themselves. But no one makes one with a good layout for laptops.

>>62299459
Look closely at the track point, it's not really the old keyboard.
