Why haven't you switched to a declarative OS /g/?
Is this the new Gentoo? I keep seeing it come up.
it doesn't have enough repo maintainers to ensure that security patches get downstreamed on a timely basis

Better than gentoo. You just declare your system in a file and let the package manager build it.
>>62292257
Got numbers to compare to other distros?
>>62292008
Because Source Mage GNU/Linux is superior
>>62293459
Oh? Does it have a declarative package manager? Or is it just another generic source-based distribution?
No real benefit to me.
>>62293544
That's understandable. It's best used by actual programmers and sysadmins.
Would this be okay for a complete noob? I want to try Linux, and this declarative thing sounds interesting.

I've used NixOS and I wouldn't consider it a noob distro. Ubuntu is better for noobs.
If anything try nixos in a virtual machine first and then see how you like it.
One thing I will say is that specifying how your entire environment is built into one central file is the tits
>>62293567
also desktop users who like not to brick their systems on upgrade
>>62293629
You could try. Not sure how 'noob friendly' it is, but it's dead simple to configure.
>>62293701
Don't forget how powerful nix-shell is.
Want to try out a tool, application, or utility?nix-shell -p go
Bam. You're dropped into a shell with the go compiler now without touching the rest of your system.
>>62293740
So it doesn't actually install it? That's pretty neat.
>respects freedom
>no systemd
>lisp
>>62293790
There are three ways to use a program:
1. Put it in your configuration file, which is system-wide.
2. Install it with `nix-env`, which is installed only for your user.
3. Install it with `nix-shell`, which just installs it in a temporary shell session.

Source Mage would seem to be the new Gentoo.
NixOS and GuixSD are closer to the new Arch and Debian respectively.
