I asked in the last thread an nobody answered, so being the faggot that I am here I go again:

To anybody here who's used ortholinears, is it possible to efficiently and frequently switch between normal and ortholinear? Or is it more like switching to Colemak or some shit?

Can the ESC key be programmed to the opposite corner on the tada68 without issue? Firmware flash needs esc key so I wonder if it would be confused at all if it was moved.

Or can the WASD V2 be programmed at all? Every video I look up for that is some wanker fapping over their keycap customization.

>>
>>62293057
I don't know anyone even over 40 that does it. Frankly I'm surprised kana is even printed on keyboards anymore.
>>
>>62291420
Alt-Tilde switches between input methods when the Japanese ime is active on windows. I've been toying with the idea of getting one of the ANSI kana sets to learn, but the JIS standard seems to have a lot of modifying keys that would be missing.

>>62293057
Typing Japanese on qwerty is a chore due to the placement of vowels, but I'm not sure how efficient the JIS layout is for kana.
>>
So I've been using a Pok3r for a bit now but haven't been programming, starting using Xcode today and jesus fuck it's difficult to navigate text with this thing.

Conversely using things like VIM and its associated hotkeys in plugins is great. Anyone else having this difficulty in IDEs editing text where it's just not worth it seemingly?

Doesn't surprise me one bit. IME is so much easier and much more flexible. It also allows you to easily pick kanji and katakana.

It's a shame because I want japanese keycaps because they look cool and I love the aesthetic.

I'm switching between an Ergodox and a regular board and it will drop your accuracy and speed.
Went from 130 on regular to 80 on both due to inaccuracies. Me having a trash typing style before certainly didn't help though.
>>
>>62292010
Ortho doesn't make sense in regular sized boards as you will never have your hands at a 90° angle to it.
It's great on splits or boards with spacing in the middle.
>>
>>62295995
But how else will I show off my weaboo sensibilities on my $200 keyboard?
>>
>>62296642
Dang. Still that's not too bad of a drop, definitely not as bad as when switching layouts, so I think I'll still go for it.

My plan, if anyone is wondering, is to carry a preonic for use at work and shit, and stick to a normal keyboard at home (at least until I can get an ergodox just the way I like it).

If they're romer-g switches then you're fucked

Some models, or some older keyboards of other models, come with actual cherry switches though. In that case the worst that can happen is non-standard sizes for some modifier keys (the alphanumeric keys will always be 1*1 and you don't need to worry about them), but even then all it will take is some extra effort and money to get what you need (unlike romer-g keycaps which simply don't exist).

Looks decent. I don't know Gaote though.

The go-to ultracheap here is the i-500 but I think it's only in tkl, and doesn't have backlighting, while being only slightly cheaper (usually around $20). Also if your board is programmable - it's not clear what they mean, but it might be - then it's an excellent deal.

if you really need the F-row so bad for certain applications like i do, invest in the kbd75.

got the tada68 with MOD-Ms and had to send back my kbd75 with zealio 67g switches because it was ISO.

it's got a nice heavy weight and wonderful build quality. i got used to not using the f-row but for work applications and certain MMOs it's just nice to have as a convenience.

get the tada68 first and get used to not having the f-row, then bump up to the kbd75

Does keycap thickness really matter if you use o-rings or don't bottom out when you type?
I know about PBT and their durability and texture over ABS, but I noticed a hardly ever bottom out while I type. Would the cap thickness even really matter in that instance? There's no sound or feel of the cap hitting the board and that's what I mostly see changes with thickness.
>>
>>62300762
Keycap thiccness only really matters for PBT since its a brittle plastic that can easily break.

That's completely up to personal preference. I'm playing tf2 just fine with blues, and people say they game on buckling springs. Now, while those might take a bit of getting used to, browns and reds are both perfectly suited to gaming, so it's really up to you.

If you don't know, best thing is to go to a physical shop and try some switches out, second best is buy a switch tester from amazon then return it. (Or you can buy a pair of keyboards from amazon, experiment with typing and gaming on both, and return them.)

Do you like Topre? If the answer is yes, then do.

If you don't know/never tried, you could try ordering one (e.g. a realforce or hhkb) to try then returning it, but that will only really be viable if you have amazon prime, you'll still want to spend a couple of days typing on it to make up your mind, and the deal you're looking at might slip away. Alternatively, just go for it and sell it on later if you really hate it, though you might take a loss in the process.

How likely am I to fuck things up? Is this something I can watch a youtube tutorial on, then do on my first try, or should I get some spare electronics to practice on? My goal is obviously a keyboard with no defects, I won't care if the soldering looks ugly or whatever as long as it works.

Get some protoboard and components to practice on, or at the very least try soldering some wire together. Soldering isn't hard, but there's a bit of a knack to it, and you will fuck your board if you have no idea what you're doing.

Topre is rubber dome, but with a slider. There is a noticeable difference in the smoothness of it, though, but it wasn't enough for me to get over the cheap feel. As a proud owner of an HHKB, it isn't the best switch out there, imo.

I could do the kbd75, but they don't have cases available to start from the pcb since I don't want any of their switch options. And their DIY kit for the tada68 includes keycaps for whatever reason.

Finally found my baby.

I use a Model M at home along with a CRT monitor oriented portrait style; in order to approximate this setup on the go, I figured that I'd need a tablet that I could turn vertical on a stand and a Bluetooth mechanical keyboard.

Couldn't use the Anne Pro, it doesn't have an arrow key cluster, but the Drevo Calibur (KeyCool 71) is cheap as shit, the Outemu blues are a little on the wobbly side (but what do I care, I'm just looking for a way to annoy people like a hipster when I type in public), but the thing werks. Yihua 908/936 and TS100 are the /csg/ meme irons.
Yihua 908 is a decent hobo iron with temperature control and takes standard hakko style tips
Yihua 936 is basically just a bench version of the 908, but the form factor gives it better maintenance options
TS100 is a great portable temp controlled iron with hackable smart firmware. Much favored by RC nuts. Instead of running straight off mains it has a standard 5.5/2.5mm barrel plug that takes any DC between 12-24V (17-65W) so it'll run straight off car power or a LiPo battery pack.
The Yihuas are cheap and great performers for their price. The TS100 you pay a bit more for the portability/compactness.

>>62317591
You can buy keycaps for anything. It might sometimes cost a little bit extra, or be more annoying.

Though the default keycaps are god-tier so it's not like you'll need to replace them urgently. And since aesthetics are the main reason to replace them, chances are you're going to be shopping around meme sets and groupbuys, and those usually come with a shitton of options so you won't have any troubles.
>>
>>62317779
Tbh senpai, I probably will never replace the keycaps, but I like to have options when I buy boards

>>62317807
Basically what I'm saying is that bog-standard $30 chink caps might not be easy to fit, but there's literally no reason to use those. If you really want to have the option to do that, too bad.
If you actually want to replace the caps you'll probably be looking at $100+ meme groupbuys, and those will definitely come in all shapes and sizes for literally everyone.

Tactile/linear gaterons: much smoother than cherry, superior. Literally made browns great again, since they're smooth and actually have tactility. (Though you still should be looking at alps if you want proper tactility, but that's obviously not an option.)

Clicky gaterons: higher-pitched click, some even say they're less tactile than cherries, though they're ever so slightly heavier. The jury's still out on this one.

In general: they have some wobble if you care, and I've heard about the occasional QC issues (though it's really more of a "made in china as opposed to in overpriced german factories" than a "sloppy poor-quality product you shouldn't trust" thing).

Tl;dr: if you want to save money, or want to try out something new, or your board doesn't have an option for cherry green, then there's nothing wrong with going for gateron. But if you really just want the best, stick to cherry for clicky switches right now (assuming of course buckling springs aren't an option).

I can! I've owned quite a few realforces in the past with both 45g, 55g, and variable weights. They feel a lot like a HHKB (obviously, since they're both topre) but the realforce has a harsher landing, presumably due to the fact it is pcb mounted rather than case mounted, but it's also a lot smoother than the HHKB. If you want one, buy it. If you dislike it, return it.

I'm using the 108 key variant with 55G domes that I installed myself. The feel is much closer to 45g topre, although I think 65g domes would feel the closest to that of case mounted topre on a HHKB.
In terms of tactility, they are far more superior than Blues, and browns.

I'm late, but the reason that I like g20 over other profiles is because of how flat the surface is. Most keys that arc up to fit to a profile leave sharp edges and I find myself getting caught on them going for a letter. I like to glide my fingers over other keys when I type as it reduces travel time from one key to another.

Being flat and rounded on the edges, it feels smoother and is more comfortable as I don't find my fingers reaching for a tall top row.

>>62318833
Thanks that's sounds good. Are they feel different from a regular rubber dome?
>>
>>62319471
They do feel different, all membrane domes have an inherited hard bottom out due to the rubber nubs on the inside of the domes (which is what hits the membrane sheet) the capacitive domes (both chink, and topre) don't have those so you get more travel with better tactile feedback once the dome buckles.

>>62319320
Get any Ducky keyboard with greens.
>>
>>62319471
Is it an easy switch on Plum/Niz boards?

Yes but it takes quite a while. Completely disassemble the keyboard and then the internals, peel off the mat, move the springs to one side, drop the new mat on with the top of the keyboard upside down, then place the springs into each of the domes and put on the top PCB. Takes about 30 minutes.

How are cherry greens?
>>
>>62320365
Sure the cheapest option is for 144£, stop lying.
>>
>>62320302
Okay. Not tire out, but requires more "effort" to hit the keys on blues than reds
>>
>>62320423
Not as tactile as the other switches I've mentioned.
>>
>>62320454
And you have to come up way higher to reset on the blues

JamesDonkey 619 or Mantistek GK2 on banggood if you want RGB

Gaote is outemu, they're decent.

Straight ortho just trades one set of compromises for another, it isn't better than traditional staggered

Thoughts on having a /mkg/ discussion channel on IRC? E.g. https://qchat.rizon.net/?channels=/mkg/
>>
>>62320443
no it isn't. Don't use amazon proxies and buy from official sellers instead

I think that having acceptable positioning for both hands is better than positioning tailored to one hand and completely out of whack to the other.
>>
>>62319175
What have you bought?
>>
>>62320691
Started with a tada68, since then I've ordered a cheapo memeforce numpad, an F77 with outrageous shipping, and just ordered a preonic kit

I would eventually want an ergodox with an aluminium case, but that's for later. I think I've got enough for now, plus I'll get proper typing experience on alps and buckling springs after a while of using those, and will be able to make more informed decisions on future purchases.

Only is you live in freedomland. You can't go cheaper than that in Europe.

That's a lot of IBM keyboards
>>
>>62320803
You would still be better getting that over blues/reds

That's a beamspring at the top, right? And why is there a naked one?

How much would you estimate your entire collection costs?
>>
>>62320972
Yup, it's a beamspring 3278.

The SSK that has no case used to live inside the other white SSK case until I put some Model F internals in that one turning it into an 'FSSK'

No idea how much the collection would be worth, I've been selling a lot of the boards recently as it's getting difficult to rotate so many. No point keeping boards I don't use enough.

Watched Gattaca today - can anyone identify this keyboard?

That's an ISO 65%. I've never heard of something like that, which narrows down your options a lot - whatever it is, it could very well be the only keyboard in this layout.
>>
>>62321673
No wait, it's not even ISO. It has a bigass-style enter that doesn't seem to be quite the proper size for a standard bigass enter, and ANSI left shift. Now I'm even more confused.

Its one of the qtronix scorpius keyboards. I forget the exact model #, but its a rubber dome with MX mount slidders

Yeah, I've never seen something like this either. Thankfully as you say, it narrows it down.

>>62321782

Thanks. I'll look into that,

It's a shame if it's a rubber dome though. They actually show the keyswitch here.

For a film which has nothing to do with keyboards or computer hardware they show a lot of the keyboards.

>>62321890
>>62321782

I've found it, thanks - it's a qtronix 83A

Cherry mx reds or browns? Just for web browsing and the occasional MOBA
>>
>>62322046
Completely up to preference, find a way to try them out. Some people absolutely love linear switches. Just don't fall for the "reds are for gaming" meme.

I personally would get gateron browns, because cherry browns have very little tactility. In fact, cherry switches aren't very smooth, which makes both their linear and tactile switches inferior to gateron.
