My GPU just died. I removed it and connected the integrated one to my monitor, but now Debian doesn't boot to a GUI.
Tried "service lightdm start" but it does nothing, and apparently fails to start.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to regain the video output. GRUB and the framebuffer work automatically, but X doesn't start.
I'm on Debian Buster (next stable) with Linux 4.12.

so for any of you familiar with Suckless software, specifically Surf,
how the shit do I customize it now? I just learned that they released version 2.0. I downloaded it and began to inspect the config.h and... there's nothing there.
In 0.6, I could customize the homepage, colors/themes, bookmarks, keybinds, everything. Now there's nothing in there and it doesn't seem like the settings are anywhere else either

what gives? did they just remove those features or what?

My install is freezing when it hits the swap file. Few times I opened some large pictures (10,000x10,000) and I couldn't even move the cursor. Everything was fucking frozen.

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
No systemd (they've implemented their own init scripts system http://sourcemage.org/Init).
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (package build files) not found in the grimoire (repository of spells) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

Installing SMGL is easy, here's the simplified process:
>boot a live Ubuntu (or whatever) USB drive
>go to SMGL website and download compressed archive of the base system
>partition and mount partition(s)
>extract the archive onto the new partition(s)
>chroot, set root passwd, hostname, configure network and locale, write fstab, install grub/lilo
>reboot
>compile a kernel (preferably the newest stable one from kernel.org)
>update sorcery, grimoires and the build toolchain
>rebuild the system (hold spells you've already built, so you don't build them twice)
The install guide will hold your hand through the whole process http://sourcemage.org/Install/Chroot
Do the chroot method, since the regular live ISO method guide is out of date currently.

Here's a list of common commands: https://pastebin.com/i4DALaNV

It's time to face the facts. Richard Stallman is nothing more than a whining, overly obese autistic manbaby who has not done anything beneficial for the computing OR technology world in the past 20 years. Seriously. Name something that RMS has done after 1995 besides bitching, crying, and moaning about bullshit that does not matter, or making some retarded, incomprehensible speech.

He demands that Linux be called GNU/Linux. That is fucking insane. The only reason GNU, GPL, and FSF are still a THING is because of Linus and the invention of Linux. If anything, Stallman should rename GNU to Linux/GNU, because without Linus, the GNU, GPL, and FSF would not be a thing anymore.

Stallman still has the fucking gonads to act like he's superior to everyone else. Saying shit such as "I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone" right after Steve Jobs' death. What an asshole. Stallman has not even programmed a single line of code since 2008, that was AFTER he essentially stopped in 1992.

He should be fucking grateful Linus stepped in to save his ass, and even allowing him to take partial credit for his achievements. If it wasn't for Linus, he would be nothing, he would probably be dead in a Burger King dumpster right now.

Besides, what has he ever even done? He claims to have written eMacs, but in reality he actually cloned gosmacs (the first eMacs that was made for UNIX). He didn't even write 50% of the code in eMacs.

You might say he wrote GCC and GDB, but the truth is that he initally wrote the C compiler, but now the vast majority for the same compiler is done by contributors.

He's a washed up, morbidly obese man who tries to stay relevant by having these retarded arguments that are similar to those found in the Soviet Union. Face it GNU/Freetards, Richard Stallman is a fat dickhead, and the only reason his name is still in the books is because of Linus's achievements.
>>
>>62290388
Better when it's on paper, less so when it's coming out of your mouth. I doubt it'll make you look bad saying it a few times. But if you have to keep saying it over and over I'd drop the GNU or it'll make them wonder if you're an activist or something.
and especially if they say "Linux" themselves, I wouldn't push the GNU.
>>
>>62290427
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you proprietary slave? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class at Harvard, and I’ve been involved in numerous free software projects, and I have contributed to over 300 core-utils for GNU. I am skilled in Lisp and I’m St. IGNU-cius, saint of the Church of Emacs. You are nothing to me but just another unethical non-free software advocate. I will distribute the fuck out of your source code with freedom the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit about me and the GPL on the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my colleagues at FSF and your binaries are being reversed engineered right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your copyright. You're fucking dead, kid. Free software can be anywhere, anytime, and it can ensure your freedom in over four ways, and that’s just with the GPLv2. Not only am I extensively skilled at hacking, but I have access to the source of the entire GNU userland and core-utils and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable proprietary code off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what ethical retribution your little “clever” program was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have ensured your users' freedom. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit free as in freedom all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Just consider: the GNU Project starts developing an operating system, and years later Linus Torvalds adds one important piece. The GNU Project says, “Please give our project equal mention,” but Linus says, “Don't give them a share of the credit; call the whole thing after my name alone!” Now envision the mindset of a person who can look at these events and accuse the GNU Project of egotism.

Are there any compositors on GNU/Linux that actually work with high refresh rates? i have a 144Hz monitor but the only way to actually use it is to disable compositing, which of course causes screen tearing and stuttering. I've tried GNOME, KDE and LXQT and when I enable vsync they all lock to 60, regardless of what I do. I enabled 144Hz in the Nvidia Settings menu, but that only affects the mouse. Any drawn windows and internet browsers still run at 60fps causing judder. Is there any way to actually lock fps to 144? Tried editing the kwin config file, changed MaxFPS, RefreshRate and Vblank all to 144 and that did fuck all.

which is pretty low as it is. don't think this is the issue.

Which program are you using to open these big images?

Maybe my thinking is wrong, but 10k x 10k probably shouldn't cause freezing if a decent amount of your RAM is free.
>>
>>62290955
>Which program are you using to open these big images?
Just gThumb.
My biggest worry is how my system becomes unstable as soon is it hits the swap. I've used Windows with pagefile and macOS and neither of those totally froze as soon as I ran out of memory.
I feel like I haven't configured something properly. I'm now afraid of hitting the memory limit.
Also, one time last year Xorg was leaking RAM and froze my system solid. I had to do alt+ctrl+f1 to get a shall and kill it. This lockup shouldn't be happening. No idea how to make it more sane though...

>I received an email from Steve Jobs’s secretary about how he’d like to meet me and could I spare an hour or two. Not knowing what it was all about, I said sure.
>The meeting was at Apple’s headquarters on Infinity Loop Drive. It was with Jobs and his chief technical guy, Avie Tevanian. This was when Apple was starting work on OS X, the Unix-based operating system that wasn’t released until September 2000. There wasn’t much formality to the meeting. Basically, Jobs started off by trying to tell me that on the desktop there were just two players, Microsoft and Apple, and that he thought that the best thing I could do for Linux was to get in bed with Apple and try to get the open source people behind Mac OS X.

I mean, there's not much to configure in Linux in terms of memory. The other thing is that it's not so much "freezing" as it is the system being slow with anything that's not the "hot" process. Furthermore, a lot of it is on the program itself to figure out what to do if the memory is low.

IMO, consider using a different default image viewer. As a potentially suicidal test, try opening the image in your web browser. I'd bet that, although it might slightly slow your system, it won't leak and use excessive amounts of memory.

Yeah, problem is that most of them don't give a shit and believe that OS should somehow control them.

that actually works fine. I'm concerned about the ROOT CAUSE of this because I'm bound to encounter another runaway process in the future... something will eat up CPU/leak RAM and it will hit my swap file and freeze my system. That's what I want to prevent at all costs.

with regards to xfce: is there any way to have a secondary monitor to the left of the primary monitor?

as things stand, from everything i can gather, the "primary monitor" checkbox is a placebo, and xfce always considers the leftmost monitor the primary monitor due to the way it handles workspaces. i'd rather not do some niggardly workaround like moving my panels and icons to the rightmost monitor, because a lot of shit will still default to the leftmost (secondary) monitor.
>>
>>62291468
You can make a config with the settings proper in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
Check what is needed based on your gpu type and setup your monitors how you want them according to xrandr names

error resume hibernation device.jpg
62KB, 1024x575px
maybe someone went through this
x220 running Antergos, went to hibernation and now is not booting.
I'm getting a
ERROR: resume: hibernation device "uuid=somethingsomethinguuidfromswappartition" not found

The uuid is actually the one from the swap partition. Looked for this on the web and most people solved it booting with a live usb and changing the uuid info on /etc/defaults/grub (and on /boot/grub/grub.cfg) to actually the /dev/sdaX that is the swap partition.
Did that and after it tells me it can't resume also tells me it can't find the root partition and tells me I'm being dropped to a recovery shell but sh: can't access tty; job control turned off so I'm shit outta luck.
Picture somewhat related because the error is similar.
Any ideas on how to solve it? Am I missing something (besides being a clueless faggot)?
>>
>>62291493
is there anything i can change in the config that would rectify the issue of the leftmost monitor always being considered the primary monitor, however?

as things stand, i can position my secondary monitor to the left of my main monitor without issue, but xfce considers the leftmost monitor (in this case, my secondary monitor) the primary monitor. apparently the primary flag just simply doesn't work in xfce, because it treats both monitors as being one huge workspace rather than two separate workspaces, so the leftmost is always considered the primary monitor

I've been dual booting with Solus and now Manjaro with Windows 10 for awhile but I can't seem to find Windows 10 in any of the GRUB or BIOS menus when rebooting. It seems clear that everything from Windows 10 is still there, but I just don't have the option anymore.

I've tried using Super Grub Disk2 lately to recover it, but it says to load it I need to set it to BIOS compatibility mode though there is nothing in any of its menus (or anything else) prompting me to do that.

I'm trying to get the position of a cursor in C/C++. The only way of doing this (without implementing some sort of logic to track the cursor position) is by using control sequence DSR as defined in ISO/IEC 6429 (see ECMA 48) with an argument of 6.
std::cout << "\x1b\x5b6\x6e";

This will add the following CPR string to the std::cout and std::cin buffers, assuming the cursor is at row 32, column 6.
^[[32;6R

By using the termios.h library, I can disable the terminal-echo of characters written to std::cout and I can make std::cin non-blocking. However, there's a problem.
If any input is written to the std::cin buffer (before or after it is made non-blocking) before or after the CPR is written to the std::cin buffer, it becomes difficult to parse, especially because I DON'T want the CPR in the std::cin buffer and I DON'T want to get rid of any user input (since that is up to the client to handle).
Here's a possible (partial) solution:
Swap the old std::cin buffer with another stream's buffer, *, request the CPR, *, put the old buffer back; parse the other stream's buffer.
But, at the positions marked by an *, the user may still pollute the stream with input and it will be lost even if the CPR is correctly parsed within the buffer. It's worth mentioning that I know ncurses exists, but I'm trying to solve this without using ncurses.

>tl;dr
How do I redirect the CPR generated by a DSR to a stream other than std::cin? Are there alternate ways of obtaining the cursor position without tracking it since the application began?

Boot up a live system from USB, then there are two viable options:
-delete everything from your HDD but the /home folder. From the installer select "keep" when it asks you if it should format the partition
-resite your root partition then copy the contents of your /home directory to the new partition. Then from the new system mount the new partition to /home and remember again to "keep" data on it.

Never install a system on top of another without deleting the old one first.

Slackware is DIY, if you fuck up then no it's not stable at all.
and even the most experienced users are going to fuck something up from time to time the difference is that they know how to fix it.

It's the same shit on any distro, the 1st line of responsibility is just placed on the shoulders of the distro maintainers. But if they fuck up you can still fix it. So what's the difference?
You're just lumping the whole process into 1 thing for slackware because compiling/fixing shit is a part of the standard way of doing things rather than an exception to the rule, but that's an unfair comparison.

I use slackware myself, and I can assure you that Slackware isn't stable, and it most certainly has its fair share of bugs--some of which, I've witnessed firsthand. Current is better, but there's the inherent instability that comes with using a testing branch.

What the "Slacker" philosophy means isn't that their (really just the one guy and also AlienBob) intention is to make a stable distro--if you want a stable distro, use Debian--although stability does come with Slack-ness. The point is that the maintainers do their best not to fuck up your install through pointless intervention. Really, Slackware is the epitome of vanilla GNU/Linux, idiosyncrasies and all; it's the basis upon which I think someone ought to gauge GNU/Linux's efficacy, which I think is a beautiful thing, but its stability relative to other distros, in my opinion, isn't so much a testament of Slackware's being better, so much as it is the desktop market's growing tolerance to blatant instability. Slackware isn't stable; distros like Arch are just exceedingly unstable as a consequence of their priorities.

Also, this >>62302173

Is it normal for arch to be unstable when dual booting with windows? It runs great with no dual boot on my thinkpad but crashes all the time on my pc

Used an OpenSuse (I think) LiveCD as a recovery disk to fix something that had broken on windows.
It was a lot of fun so I started reading more about GNU/Linux and eventually installed Ubuntu, and then shortly after thought I'd try Gentoo (I never knew it was a meme at the time, I just independently decided portage sounded awesome)

when i use full terminal emulation with ctrl alt f1 on debian, does that make it so it's using as much battery as if i don't have a gui running at all? because hitting alt f7 will exit it back to the old state of your gui so i'm not sure

logically, running no graphical environment will use less battery than using a graphical environment. how do i do that?
>>
>>62303999
i don't understand what you mean
>>
>>62304017
a graphical environment requires more processes to be run than a text-only environment (such as keeping track of the mouse), which requires more energy to be consumed by cpu in processing them
>>
>>62300081
thanks anon, I will try that as soon as I get back home from work this weekend. Good thing is that I own more than one x220 and both have pretty much the same exact specs/configs and it will come in handy if the this one craps out too.
>>
>>62304135
i ment what you was asking, not the logic you presented
but i suppose you want to not boot into a graphical environment - rather it just be a text console see this https://askubuntu.com/questions/870221/booting-into-text-mode-in-16-04/870226

Install powertop and track what consumes power the most.

Usually, it's the display and the radio devices which suck the most juice, GPUs don't waste power when practically idle.

Typical dipshit Arch reply.

Arch is unstable if you use anything outside of its main repository, which is full of vanilla boring shit that they don't need much manpower to maintain.

AUR is a fucking joke.

Whats different from adding in your precious third party repos to enable 90% of the software you want to use cause of KEKED main distro repos?

Absolutely zero
>>
>>62304445
Check dmesg to see the cause of deconnection.
If it's a deauthentication by choice, your wireless card and/or your wireless network are shit. If a kernel module oops or crash is involved, look up the bugzillas and report if the issue has not been brought in before.

iptable or dd aren't even avaliable outside /bin for some reason. And a couple of other commands. It just doesn't werk.

give the BSD family a genuine try. start with FreeBSD, and if you don't like it perhaps try DragonyFly or OpenBSD.

You can but you cant be booted in to that windows install because you dont have access to running windows files
>>
>>62304771
BSD comes as a full system - the entire OS is developed by the team, whereas Linux is done with the kernel and userland seperate. The BSDs include a ports system, similar to Gentoo's portage - you can build programs from source and edit their configurations and build flags etc. and also use the binary package manager alongside if you want.
The manual pages for the BSDs are often very good and clear, and have helpful people on the IRCs if you feel lost. If you want to try a BSD, use FreeBSD first. then if you like it, you might want to take a look into OpenBSD or DragonFly - which i use personally and really like, it has nice features such as the HAMMER filesystem and can run virtual kernels in userspace.
>>
Arch is just a stepping stone
>>
>>62304893
BSD is barebones packages supported by the main devs. After that its a wasteland where you get your packages, also the "security" that it offers is limited to the default repo and nothing else

BSD is shit

Hey guys I've attempted to install ubuntu ( I'm a little ashamed that I have problems with this and in past I've installed Arch and done much more useful work learning to configure stuff around, but that been 1 - 2 years ago )
the problem is .. first check what I've done:
I took the 128 gb ssd that I have and partitioned it as follows in this exact order:
1. /boot 1 gb
2. efi partition 250 mb
3. / everything else
but in the end it showed 1 mb free then suddenly something like 300 kb free, anyway ignoring that.

I've restarted after install and pressed f12 to see the boot menu, there was something ubuntu related present 2x times, alongside normal ssd showing so this is a clear indicator of me fucking up big time.

I'm going to re-install again, how do you recommend to partition this time?

I'm eager to start programming the stuff I want to already - I've wiped my windows install and I'm not looking to go back, I want to get very very comfortable with terminal, learning bash - minor tweaks behind everything working well and staying stable so I'm going to stick with ubuntu for at least 2 weeks maybe more... so guys I would appreciate your help.

>>62305110

>>
>>62305151
You mean install in legacy bios?
But then is it important if I put grub ahead of /boot or doesn't matter at all?
I kinda wanted to install it in EFI mode tho.
>>
>>62305110
give fdisk -l ? The other partitions shouldn't have the bootable flag on

>>62305168
grub-efi exists too

Just installed i3. Is there a faster way to theme this shit rather than using the config file? Seems fucking strenuous to tweak even with shortcuts and I'm not all that down with it it since i usually just install arc darker and call it a day (which i have done but don't wanna spend pointless effort punching in hex codes)

I want to have an alias that works like
>w | field 2
I found awk can do this
>awk '{print $2}'
how can I alias this to "field" which takes an argument like "2"?
>>
>>62305463
It would be very easy to make such a tool, especially since you can refresh it from the command line, but what's the motivation? Remember i3 is a WM not a DE with a suite of tools.

How much configuration is there really anyway? Like 2, maybe 3 colors?
If you want to make it easier just take a screenshot of your desktop, open it up in gimp, and use the paint bucket to change the colors on things until you find one you like then put it in your config file

It sounds like you want to use a function rather than an alias.
