CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1400 - If you need multithreading
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use, not for just gaming
GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now
RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM, 3200 MHz is ideal
General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

an i3-6100 on a h110 or b150 with 2133, is the same price as a g4560 on a b250 with 2400. Doesn't really matter as it looks like you will need a 300 series board for 8th gen. and 1151 v1 is dead. No wonder there was no h210

Lads, I need help.
I built my PC today and all went dandy and everything is working fine.
So I wanted to go on the Internet and do I bought an ethernet cable. Except it can't connect. I've tried most solutions that I saw on the Web. Changing its speed and duplex, reinstalling the drivers, etc. Nothing works. Any ideas? I would appreciate it.

did you set it to boot from the SSD after installing it or did you set it to boot from the USB? Either way, go into the bios and check the boot priority

Looking for recommendations on computer chairs. I'm thinking about getting a memeracer chair. I've sat in one and they seem really sturdy. I'd like something I can lean back in and it's not going to fall apart after a year.

This stuff really comes down to preference. If you test a chair and you like it, go for it.
Finished that painting. It sucks, and I have no chance of winning, but at least I finished something. It was either that or sulk about it after I totally fucked up the first one. Better to get something done and have it be mediocre than to accept defeat and get nothing done.

So, my GTX 1080 MSI Aero has had heating issues, (from what I know, this model is infamous for it) and I'd like to get a solid cooling system. I don't know what's compatible, what's recommended, or anything. When I run something like, PlayerUnknown, I can get up to 93 degrees, when idle it's at a steady 58 degrees. I've had it throttle on me one time while playing, so I've had enough.
I don't know much about computer parts, but from what I can tell, I don't think I have room for another fan in my case? I assume I'll just replace the one I have now I suppose. I got two pictures to show you what I have room for. I don't really have much of a budget, just not something over $150 I think is ideal.
Also, I don't believe it has anything to do with the thermal paste on the card itself, or dust around the fans. I tried a custom fan curve as well and it doesn't result it much of a change.
I'd appreciate any feedback, thanks.

>>62290714
>>62290728
You can fit two 120s/140s in the front a possibly some on the top. Probably wouldn't make much of a difference though, the sweet spot is 2 in the front and 1 in the back.
Why do you think it's not the thermal paste? Have you looked? If not, maybe you should.
>>62290810
To enjoy a really pretty display
>>62290813
I didn't mean you could fit two 120s or two 140s in the front, I meant that you could fit either two 120s or two 140s. I can't tell the difference between 120mm & 140mm.
How the fuck can bios update itself and check if it's up to date but windows says I don't have internet connection?
>>62290813
I haven't checked. I'm basing that comment about thermal paste specifically on reviews and other boards I've read about this card in particular. I mean, I guess I can replace it, but regardless I'd still like a new cooling system. Two Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan would be ideal?

If you are doing this for gaming don't do a 1700. 1600 at most unless you are getting a 1080ti.
Video Card upgrades are more important than CPU upgrades unless it's a 5 year old processor.
Hey /g/, what are the pros and cons of getting a 7700k vs 7600k vs 1600x assuming price isn't a problem, and that I mostly intend to be running strategy games like Stellaris, CKII, Hoi IV and some Total War games.
>>62294190
In that price range, gonsider the 1700x.
Pro is that you won't have a CPU bottleneck unless you have 2 1080tis.
Con is that you are probably spending too much money and could get off on an i5 or 1600.
Is it worth waiting for coffee lake or picking up a 7700k for $250
>>62294190
The 7600K and 7700K have problems with heat. Intel used thermal paste between the CPU die and the heat spreader. This means they are notoriously hot CPUs. 90-100° no matter the cooling isn't uncommon under load.
There are other issues like the power consumption of the Intel chips vs the AMD chips.
The 7600K is already maxed out in many modern games because it lacks threads. Games are generally designed around 4 cores and 8 threads, so the 7600k will hit 100% CPU usage commonly, which will cause stutter. Even at a 5.0 GHz overclock, it can't keep up with many games without stuttering.
The 7600K is completely outclassed by the Ryzen series.
The 7700k is the best for 144 fps for now, but consider the drawbacks and ask yourself if that's worth it.
>>62294248
Go Ryzen.
>>62293655
finally have the cash and plan to do more work than gaming (3d rendering and some simulation)
Also I barely game with most of my games being from 2013 and older
I'm fighting with myself about investing in aesthetics or getting a better performing system.
Stock wraith and no RGB and all of these youtube videos don't help.
>>62294190
>>62294248
only reason to consider a 7700k is if you absolutely know you need one to achieve your target FPS and are comfortable delidding and troubleshooting thermal issues. If you're just in the market for a new CPU, get ryzen.
>>62294329
better performing system. Just buy a neat case and then some LED strips if you want it to be flashy
>>62294349
>are comfortable delidding and troubleshooting thermal issues
Temps spike to 90. But I haven't seen a 7700k throttle under thermal load yet unless it is massively overclocked.
What are the signs of a dying GPU? I have been getting a weird graphical glitch for a while but I can't figure out if it's the monitor, the OS, the GPU, the drivers, or maybe even my eyes/brain is just fucked.

>Buys a 1700 two days ago

>>62294747
there isn't much difference between the 1700 and 1700X anyways. If it had been the 1800X, then I'd have been mad
>>62294902
I returned the 1700 for a refund and got the 1700x. Did I make a bad move? I originally wanted the base clock speed of the 1700x but it was a bit pricey, so I decided on the 1700 w an overclock. I also think that I got shafted on the deal for the 1700 because it costed like $320
>>62294936
You will need an aftermarket cooler.
That is about it.
>>62294941
I already got one so that's that. Basically my reasoning behind it was I lose $10 for better performance, rather than $60-$80
Should I bite the pillow and just get a 1080 Ti now and some DDR4 RAM or maybe they won't be too overpriced by xmas?
I wanted to build a new PC that performs decently and recently got a 4K monitor.
>>62294963
To be honest, no one is really going to be using the full potential of the difference between 1700 and 1700x. It isn't like the 1700x has more significant IPC advantage over the 1700. How often are you going to use that.
>>62294970
Yes.
>>62294970
You get used to Nvidia's burly dick after a few sessions
>>62294990
Not too often in reality. Maybe I'm just greedy because in the end I'm only saving like $10, but it feels better to know I got a better deal
>>62291009
Another stick of the same ram works, the heatpipe design of the 212 is fine, what you want is to replace the fan and get another fan for a push-pull setup, use a Y 4pin cable so you have them running at the same speed.
>>62294970
If you're not gonna buy a 1050 ti, buy a 1080 ti. When you get ~25% performance gain with a ~30% increase in price over the 1080, it's absolutely worth it in today's market
>>62288999

retard who was asking about fans earlier here
this is a diagram of my case
the white are fans currently installed
the grey things are the heatsink and gpu
the green are all the spots cooler master says i can put fans; question marks on the ones i don't think will fit
the fan on the heatsink currently is clicking and needs to be replaced, so i figured i would replace it with push-pull, but maybe i should add more fans or something to make airflow better

>More exhaust than intake

>>62295745
surprisingly it doesn't get that dusty. GPU fans get the worst of it for some reason.
any suggestion on fan placement? do you think I should get a controller so they don't all run at full speed all the time since the only pwm header on the board is the cpu one?
Hello, my uncle has offered me some pc parts he found and I need help knowing whether they are better than my current parts. There were mixed comparisons when I looked online so I figured I would ask here.
I have a i5 4690k, and he is offering a i7 4930k. Which is better? The comparisons showed different results, and I am only really planning on using it for gaming.
I have a MSI z97 Gaming 5 mobo, and he is offering an Asus x79 deluxe. I couldn't really find much in the way of comparisons, but I am assuming that is due to them just being motherboards.
If I accept the i7 from him, it looks like I need to nab the mobo as well; my current board doesn't seem compatible with that processor.
Thanks!
>>62295896
Does the noise affect you? If no, then leave it. Try have a positive pressure than a negative one due to dust build up. Aside from that, that is fine.
>>62295909
Is it free? if yes just take it. You only need to pay for a new windows license if yours is OEM which there are multiple ways to get around.
>>62295914
guess i'll just get an 80mm one for that gpu holder thing to help cool it down and 2 120mms for the cpu then.
>>62295909
The 4930k is older architecture(ivy-e), but it isn't like haswell is much better and games are finally getting in on the moar cores meme, so a hexacore with SMT will absolutely be better than a quadcore without.
>>62295909
the i7 is better but you won't really notice any gaming improvements (it's mostly multicore performance boosts). Also higher power draw so make sure your PSU can accomadate. Yeah, the chips have different sockets so if you take one, you need both, and can't mix and match with your current cpu/mobo. Your mobo is better (in that it has more features) but it's a moot point.
Is he selling them to you or giving them to you? You might as well take em if they're free, but if you have to pay or trade, it's not worth it
>>62295999
>games are finally getting in on the moar cores meme
Like? Xcom2 WoTC benchmarks show that it is still heavily in the favor of strong IPC. Same goes for WH2 based on WH1. Destiny 2 absolutely needs strong IPC.
>>62295909
I would personally rake the 4930k if he's offering it for free. You might get a slight edge on single core performance on the 4690k if both were overclocked, but the difference won't really be tangible. However the 4930k opens you up to a lot of cores/threads, I wouldn't even consider upgrading to ryzen or coffeelake(unless intel comes in guns blazing with it trying to bury ryzen) if I had that.
As a budgetfag, I'm looking at used graphics cards more than new.
What would be something noticeably better than a GTX560Ti, preferably more than 2GB VRAM, but also consistently cheap? I was thinking of something like a GTX660, which is still 2GB, but since I have 1440x900 and plan on moving up to 1920x1200 or so, I wanted something with over 2GB so I didn't have to turn down texture settings in >gaymes
I don't play all the latest games, I think The Witcher 3 has been one of the most demanding games I've played so far, if it's any reference.
I've got R5 1400, 2x8GB 2660MHz memory (will upgrade CPU/RAM when Zen2 comes, for 6+ cores, and since my RAM can't be overclocked further without loosening the timings.), and power draw isn't overly concerning since I've got a bronze 600W power supply.

waiting for volta should be only an option for you if you don't need a new gpu because your old one is still strong enough for what you do, if you feel like you need/want more power atm.
Buy 1070 or 1080ti, dunno the 1080 doesn't feel right to me because the TI is only 180-200€ more but packs a much bigger punch.
I would recommend the Vega56 because you can undervolt it to acceptable power levels and you can also unlock more shaders which depending on how lucky you are with how many more functioning shaders you have you get up to 1080 levels of performance with a vega64 bios flash...
But there are only the fucking trashtier blower style cooler out atm so I won't touch Vega with a 10foot pole until AiB models with real cooling solutions are out.

QVL means nothing. First, set memory voltage to 1.35 V, if you didn't already. Second, set the VSoc to 1.1-1.15 V. If it still doesn't post, set memory timings to like 22-22-22-50, try to post, if successfully, lower them down step by step and find that spot when it starts to crash, then bump it up by one and you're good.

>>62300084
From linuscucktips forum:
That's an easy answer.
It depends on the case. Some cases uses cheapo cables, because they assume that you are using an onboard sound, and have 8$ speakers, or headphones. Other cases, uses shielded cables. The shielded cable, as you might have guesses varies in quality. Also it depends how many wires are around the cable.
Last but not least, some front panel connector, connects the ground of your headphone port to the USB port... and this is where you have sever interference. The good news, is that this is actually easy to fix, but you POSSIBLY needs to say bye bye to a set or all USB frontal ports (depends on the computer case). First thing to do, is to remove the wire that ground the case. Does your problem solved? No? Ok so now remove the USB connector to your motherboard or every set, until the interference stops. If the interference continues, then the cable is not good. If it's solved, then well it's solved.. sadly your frontal USB port don't work.
>>62300307
>wierdly the 1950x seems to get lower power draw compared to the 1920.

However, businesses and schools need software in line with modern standards, and most likely are still using their junk from the eighties before the economic bubble burst. Better than I would like to be rendering video: The architecture. Ryzen underperforms at real world workloads when compared to anything after Haswell.

Get a 1700.
Get a B350 MB.
Get a 600-650W PSU unless you demand the PSU to passively cool.

Mobo overkill, very little price/performance (Not overclocking) gain I'm guessing per suggestions? Not stomping on the idea, curious.
>>62302416
I'm guessing I won't be getting this until early 2018 if everything doesn't go my way. Can't tell if serious or shillin.
>>62302508
Why not at least see if anything good comes out of it if you are not rushed?

Look at the feature set offered by X370.
Then look at the feature set offered by B350.
Unless you are going multi-GPU or intend on filling all available I/O, the big draws of X370 don't mean anything. If you intention is "going overkill for the sake of overkill", then sure. Bear in mind there are lower-end B350 and higher-end B350 as well.

Fair advice, Anon. A voice of reason. I just built a computer sort of similar to this and got the bug to get rolling on my own, and having similar components might ease troubleshooting. But that doesn't challenge me I imagine.
>>62302606
Looking at it more and more, yeah, the mobo is overkill for sure. I do intend on using the slots for GPU passthrough, but not SLI so that's a waste. The I/O slots might get filled, honestly, but that's what case slots are for.

This confused me. But ASUS are making a TUF for the microATX B350 set. The TUF board are good. I wish it was a full ATX X370 board, but being MicroATX is the only reason it's B350 instead of X370. Because mATX doesn't support dual GPU.

Adults who watch anime.
>>62302578
Adults don't spend their time encoding anime, rendering in blender on their desktop PC or running cinebenches for fun.
Adults WATCH anime (no multithreading involved), browse the internet, do productivity tasks (Photoshop, Office), rip music (lame, single core), play games.

All games on ultra:
Hand of Fate (setting target fps to 120 gave me 165, other options gave me between 60 and 600)
Crysis 2 (easily 1000+ fps)
Just Cause 2 (don't forget to turn off bullet holes and decals, having them on can crash the game)
Skyrim Legendary edition with high res textures and a few mods (59fps was the lowest I ever went, and it was right after starting the game)
Honey Select (didn't use an fps counter but it ran great)
ADR1FT (iirc I was getting 165fps stable)
On a side note, has anyone ever successfully played EVENT[0] without frame dips? It maxes out all 16 threads and the 1080ti and even when I turn a few settings down it runs at around 80fps with drops. It must be the most unoptimized game ever.
