Guys, I want to purchase an x230 but I'm concerned about Lenovo and their superfish spyware scandal. Is/was the x230 affected by this? Does Lenovo add any other spyware bullshit in their thinkpads?

Have you applied for this:
>>
>>62277301
So you'll probably use Windows then? I've only used it with GIMP and Krita since I'm not keen on the subscription stuff with PS.

I just got the x220 so I'm still putting it through it's paces but I will say that it has a really nice display as far as the tablet is concerned. The resolution may put you off since it's kind of low but it has decent levels of sensitivity. Plus the x220 version is touch screen. Mine is kind of broken but I have another screen on the way.

The x220 is really nice too though since it has a latch on it that will lock the screen in place. Also it can rotate in both directions, unlike the x220 version. Also it doesn't have a trackpad(which I very much love).

The x220 version comes with an i7 option which will very much help with rendering effects and filters in graphics programs but it can tend to get a little hot because of that.

>>
>>62278711
>>62278747
I have better instructions. But first a preamble.

First thing to remember about Li-Ion batteries is that they can only endure a certain number of "full" cycles before degrading below their specified capacity enormously, but what is a "cycle?" A cycle is defined as the *equivalent* of a full charge and discharge. If you charge your battery all the way and then drain it all the way, this is one cycle. If you charge it all the way, drain it to 90%, charge, and drain back to 90% you'd need to do this ten times for a "cycle." However, if you drain a battery all the way every time you might only get 500 cycles before it's degraded substantially. However, if you drain it to 50% and recharge each time, you can easily get 1500 cycles out of the exact same battery, and if you only drain it to 90% you can get over 5000 cycles.

Depth of discharge is what kills batteries. Don't drain them to empty, and if you can, set your laptop to hibernate automatically when it hits 10%, or 25%, or more, depending on how long you want your battery to last.
>>
If the above didn't refresh your battery quite a bit, you can do the more extreme procedure of putting it into a plastic bag, evacuating the air, and freezing it for a few days. Then take it out of the freezer, whack it really hard a number of times with the palm of your hand, and let thaw to room temperature before taking it out of the bag. Try the above procedure again. Make sure to monitor your computer for a couple hours after you insert the previously whacked and frozen battery in case of fire, if you get too overzealous you could damage the pack. The goal here is to break up the dendrites which have formed and caused high resistance inside the cell(s), not to unsolder the batteries.

>>62278717
Why do you want window anyway?

>>62279039
oops these are the non-emergency instructions:

OK, on to refreshing. First, take your battery and charge it all the way. Then drain it all the way until your computer turns off, and charge it all the way again. Take it out of the machine and leave it for a couple days or maybe a week, then charge it again without draining it first. It will have partially self-discharged a bit. Then drain to no lower than 40%, and recharge it. Do this a couple times, resting the battery for a couple days each time. It will massively boost your capacity.

My Thinkpad battery is slowly decaying. Actually two of them, 9 cell at 300 cycles, ~50% capacity and 3 cell at 100 cycles, ~66% capacity. I'm considering whether I should get the cells replaced or just buy a new battery. It appears that good quality cells would cost 5.5$ a piece, making it 50$ for nine cells, but since I can't replace them myself, it would cost me another 50$ more. New batteries appear to be very cheap though, even cheaper than the cells themselves which make me worry about the quality of the cells used. I could get a 9 cell for 40$.

What's your experience with battery replacement, /tpg/?

I love my x220. It's so small and comfy to use. But there are some things I don't like about it.

The 1366x768 display resolution is too small for general usage in 2017. Most sites seem so cramped compared to 1920x1080 and higher. The screen itself is fine however, I don't mind that it isn't IPS. It is a comfy screen.

My second complaint is with the speakers. My phone is louder than the x220 and it was released only a year later. The volume range in the x220 is abysmal. I have to use headphones just to hear anything if there is any other sound being made in the room. It is like a mouse trying to scream when I play any music.

Those are my complaints about the x220. Otherwise, it is a fine machine and sexy as hell. When this machine kicks the bucket, I would like to buy a Retro, which I hope will come with FHD display resolution and decent audio volume.
>>
>>62282163
X200s/X201s have higher resolution and 16:10 ratio. The speaker is also shit though.
>>
>>62282142
I frankly did not know that, as I didn't put much effort into spitting out a response. If that's the case, then find one that doesn't throttle (T420 only throttles with a 65W and the battery removed IIRC) and that accepts the 9-cell slice.

So, a T420 with an i5 and 9-cell battery AND 9-cell slice.

T440p with a trackpad swap - the stock trackpad has no physical buttons but for $30 you can get a T450 series trackpad to replace it.

>Intel i5
Has this base spec in full powered variant. Also has i7.
The quad cores will help immensely with your compiling

>1080p screen
Yes, IPS as well which means good contrast and viewing angles. But there are models that exist without this so be aware

>8GB
Yes, easily upgradeable as well.

>256 SSD
This configuration is available but you can have up to 3 potential drives installed if you need to expand.

>Good battery life
7-10hrs

>HDMI, VGA, jack input
There is no HDMI but it has mini display port which you can get an adapter for

In general, this is about as modern as you can get without getting too expensive or having the design begin to suffer more and more.

Yeah, T420 can handle a 2720qm well enough. I doubt you'll get the whole package for $100 or less, though.

Can confirm it's pretty nice. i5 has great battery life, i7 has ok battery life. Make sure you get the 9cell.

If you plan to actually push itnat all though, you'll need to plug it in.

You can throw two 2.5 drives in it easily + a 2242 Msata SSD IIRC.
>>
>>62283084
Noticeable difference between i5 & i7 battery life?

I'm assuming this is just the dual core vs quad core cpus. There is one i7 which is dual core.
>>

i7 loses a couple hours off battery. 47w vs 37w TDP is noticeable, but I presume you could get the 4712MQ or whichever one is 37w and quadcore to avoid that issue.

>>

That's bullshit anyways.
1. The chiclet keyboard is OK.
2. On 30 series models you can put on the old keyboard.
>>
>>62283692
Yeah just ignore that point. That layout is a bit dopey but the feel is down to preference. Many people think the new keyboards are an improvement but again, main take away is that the keyboard style and layout is subjective.
>>
Do you really notice an improvement if you add more ram and an ssd to an x60 if you just use it as a 4chan machine?

It already boots up in like 20 seconds right now using linux

Should I pull the trigger on a S1 Yoga? It's a display model, which means some people probably touched it but it's a very small store anyway.

Battery wasn't used and is according to the seller working perfectly.

Goes for $680 with 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, running a i7 4500U tho.

I could use the tablet drawing meme for college.
>>
>>62283692
I actually prefer the early chicklet keyboards. Later that got lower and lower in quality, but my chicklets on the T530 feel way better than my T420. For one the keyboard does not bend and the actuation force on the T530 is comfy af.

>2242 Msata SSD IIRC.

It's a 2242 M.2 SSD, SATA based and ridiculously rare, it's really not worth putting an M.2 SSD into it unless you really need it. It's cheaper to just get a caddy and a 2.5" drive.

>>
>>62286002
I think it's still a fine machine with an SSD. I was doing some game emulation yesterday, SNES, N64 and had no problems. I do run Gimp and Krita a bit when editing images and it runs them well enough. Sometimes I edit photos from my Sony A6000 and it can handle the JPEG files just fine. Of course you want to use the raw files but I'm working on that at the moment. Those files can be 6000x3000 so it's pretty cool to see that the x200T can handle them. Now if you do large, CPU bound filters you might notice some slowdown but it's not too bad. I'll see if I can load up Lightroom in through wine and do a few tests to see how it performs
>>
>>62286002
>>62286185
Whoops forgot the other parts of your questions:
>general purpose machine
Absolutely fine. It handles multiple tabs open just fine and I can watch youtube vidoes up to 720p(even 60fps) but no point in going higher since the screen is only 1280x800. With the dock I can get 1080 out through vga(that's all I have, I need to get a DP to HDMI cable) and videos look much better.
>screen protector needed
I don't think so . The screen is meant to be written on by the pen and wiping it down with a dry cloth seems to be enough to keep it looking nice. When drawing on it you will notice some fingerprints but you won't notice them unless the screen is off or very dark.
>best pen
The one that comes with it. But I've heard people use Fujitsu pens too, not sure which models. There was an anon that posted a picture of one he or his girlfriend used, maybe he'll see this post and if he does maybe he'll post it. Also the x220 tablet pen does work with the x200 tablet. I have both and tested it out to see if it works. The x220 pen has to be calibrated though since even the very lightest strokes will produce dark lines. But through software I think it could be a fine pen.

Well, the US eBay is your best bet, probably. After that, make a buddy with IT connections and get Chinkpads through him. OR, if you have enough dosh, you can buy parts on eBay and build the thing yourself. I found a mobo with lower chassis on eBay for 30$ (ish)
>>
>>62289610
Plug a mouse in, try that.

Boot onto a different OS (USB Ubuntu is probably the easiest) and see if that fixes it.

Then try reinstalling the drivers for the touchpad anyways. If none of that works, you'll have to pull the entire thing apart and replace the trackpad.

don't listen to the autist op.

x230 is fine.

GRAIN OF SALT RECOMMENDED:

I use an i5 and it runs like Zeus's ballsweat. My i5 turboboosts to 3.1, so I don't really see an advantage. Your mileage may vary, I only do WPS and PDF reader anyway.

The X200t arrived! I had to drive by the post office of pick it up before it was delivered tomorrow because I couldn't wait.

What Linux distro do I want if I want to theme it like windows xp? Right now I have my x61t as windows 95 lubuntu, and this will be windows xp

I looked at it but it seemed like a whole thing. I think I'm going to try flashing my T400 with the HEADS project when it's more developed.

It's pretty good.
Mine is base model (I think), Core i5, 4GB RAM, legendary key board.

I will upgrade some shit later (SSD, RAM).

Already flashed the BIOS

So I want to change out the palmrest on a x220 to one without a touchpad. Looking at the x201 it looks like it would fit just fine if it wasn't for the mouse buttons being longer. Can anyone confirm or deny?
>>
>>62289819
Fuck yeah boi I also bought an x220 and bought a thin hard drive so it'd fit, looks like this hard drive is a thin variant hard drive too. The downside is that it is only 60 gb so it's not really useful an an x220 that I want to use more extensively.

a T420 with an i5 in good condition should be about max 120 quid. Then you upgrade ram, put SSD in, throw linux on it and upgrade it later with coreboot to better cpu etc

$442 freedom shekels

>>
>>62290056
Too expensive.
If you buy the base model, and then you buy the HDD and the RAM you'll pay less than that.

Also I think they are putting the Windows licence in the price.

Mine costs like $150 USD.

Should I sell x240 and buy x230 with IPS and backlit?

X240 have very good TN screen that looks almost like IPS but only thing that I don't like in that laptop is because it don't have backlit for keyboard.
>>
>>62290147
YES.

>>62290119
Wow, that's a very good deal m8
>>
>>62290093
You probably will, because once you buy it, it will be usable. Then you upgrade it and it's all about comfort. Of course, if you don't need one aspect or another, don't use it (I need a large battery for on the road, you may not need that).

Think of a thinkpad not as a product, but as an investment. Replacement parts are so plentiful that it's stupid not to buy them when something goes wrong. Today, it's normal to throw out a laptop just because some of the keys aren't working. In the ThinkPad world, it's like selling your car because the oil filter is dirty. Yes, it takes work to change it, but it gives you more use.

Welcome to TPG.
>>
>>62289898
Just turn the trackpad off in bios you autist.

It's a trackpad, not a TouchPad(tm).

I really regret buying x240, first is keyboard, touchpad and then how is it hard to change hard drive.

Only good thing is battery life that is around 17hrs.

>>62290119

>>

t420 should be atleast 160 euro with Nvidia card and 1600x900.

That is price in my shithole european country.
>>
>>62290245
No problem, glad to help. I've been in your shoes not too long ago.

Ask yourself what you want from the laptop. Then ask yourself how much someone has put into that (time and money). Are you better off investing time or money?

My boss invests money. He spent 400$ on an X230 and a battery. Nothing else. Why? He was going abroad the next day and had money to throw at the problem.

Me? I bought a laptop for 98$ with dock and everything and I'll be buying a new battery next month, not sooner because tight on money.
>>
>>62289898
it definitely will not fit

>only thing that I don't like in that laptop is because it don't have backlit for keyboard.
this has to be one of the most imbecile reasons ever

backlit keyboards are fucking retarded, who the fuck can't touch type in 2017
>>
>>62290410
This. When I was doing some F-keys bullshit, I just turned on my Thinklight. Other than that, why glare yourself?
>>
>>62290410
>>62290435
I dunno but this x230 have ips so is it worth?
I just want to satisfy my autism with backlit but I can do live without it.
TN Screen on x240 looks good and only difference is angle view that IPS have.

X240 have bad trackpoint and I am heavy user of trackpoint.
>>
>>62290553
Depends, then, on what you are going to do with the X240. Try and sell it?
>>
So I'm in the market for a small and portable but decent laptop for some programming. I've been looking at the x230, x240 and x250. Which one should I get? x230 and x240 have barely any difference in price refurbished, so maybe I should go for the x240? x250 seems more expensive but is it worth it?
>>
>>62290630
I'd go with the X220, but I'm fucking biased. I've seen the X230 and it's okay, not sure about long typing, tho.

Basically anything with a keyboard will work for you. With the extended battery you can use one hand for holding it and the other for typing.
>>
>>62290583
I want to sell x240
>Good TN that looks like IPS but don't have good angle like in IPS monitors
>120 SSD
>trackpoint with one button touchpad
>17hrs battery (KDE Manjaro)

for x230 that have
>ips
>500 7200rpm GB HDD
>normal touchpad and trackpoint
>around 6hrs probably
>backlit meme keyboard

IPS for x240 cost around 100 euros and my manjaro xfce boots same like ssd on windows.
Only reason why I would trade my x240 for x230 is because of IPS, touchpad and 2 slots of ram.
>>
>>62290644
What makes the x220 better? The keyboard? (since you mentioned that you're not sure if the x230 is good for long typing)
>>
>>62290630
I own x240 and I don't feel that I brought good laptop.

>it is very hard to open and change HDD to SSD
>one slot of ram
>touchpad uses a lot of space
>haswell CPU that is weaker than i5 from x230 and x220 because battery life.
>don't feel like I own thinkpad at all

I don't see any difference in typing with t510, x220 and x240 and probably x230 if I trade it with my x240.
>>
>>62290669
x220 is only better for keyboard but honestly there is no difference typing with x220 keyboard and x240.

X220 have Intel HD 3000 and that is really outdated.

HD4000 is standard now.
>>
>>62290669
Well I've translated a book on the X220. I played with the BIOS on the X230 for about 4 minutes. Hence my bias.
>>
>>62290750
Not going to be using the laptop too much, going to be doing most of my work and typing on my desktop, only need a laptop for the portability when I will occasionally need it. Thus, the best possible keyboard isn't that important to me.
>>62290740
And iirc the x230 does have HD4000, so maybe I should go with that?

>>62290709
Yeah, seems like the x240 isn't any better than the x230 at all, thanks for informing me. Could you elaborate on the CPU though a bit? How is the CPU in the x240 worse? I thought it was newer generation CPU?
>>
>>62290809
The CPU in the X240 is ULV, so it consumes less power but also performs worse than its predecessors. The lack of a second RAM slot also limits it to single channel, which has a significant impact on iGPU performance.
>>
What's a good distro that works out of the box on a t420?
I've tried void and debian so far and they both have their separate issues i don't want to touch just yet.
>>
>>62290553
x240 has a backlit keyboard option and a FHD IPS display option, the trackpoint is fixable by replacing the touchpad and the battery life is superb because of the ultra low voltage processor.
>>
>>62290903
*buntus work on everything

ebay mostly, amazon refurbished works too, lenovo puts their own refurbished shit on it albeit a tad more expensive than what you'd find on ebay sometimes.

Does the ultrabay battery for the T430s give it at least 3 hours of extra juice? Getting about 3 with the stock battery usually.

First time posting on /g/ in about a year and a half, but I just wanted to leave this somewhere.

I made a USB-bootable image to flash the X201 BIOS (in this case, the included BIOS ROM has the wireless card whitelisting removed). I don't have Windows on my X201, and I don't have the dock with the optical drive (yet), so this was the only way I managed to flash my BIOS. It worked for me, so I wanted to share.

I basically extracted the FAT partition from the lenovo-supplied bootable ISO image, did some tweaking, and shoved it all into a FreeDOS 1.2 installation I made under QEMU. I had to prevent it from loading any extensions, which I kind of hacked together in FDCONFIG.SYS (FreeDOS's CONFIG.SYS), and then tweaked autoexec.bat a little.
I first tried to get the El Torito image to boot from a flash drive without luck. DOS isn't my specialty (unix is), and I haven't used it in about 15 years.

Anyway, I was able to boot it and flash my BIOS successfully, so I thought I'd share.

To put it on a flash drive, unpack it and then run:
cat image.img > /dev/sd(Whatever-Your-Device-Node-Is)
sync

Then you can remove it or reboot or whatever.

TL;DR flash your X201 BIOS with only a USB drive.

The X220 is wider than the X201. The palmrest is not interchangeable.
Only the X200 and X201 palmrests are at all interchangeable, from what I can tell. I used a NOS X200 palmrest without a touchpad to upgrade my X201 to god-tier. Also got a bowl (soft rim) trackpoint cap from ebay, since Lenovo stopped selling them.
