There's two types of Mastodon instances, censored ones that are basically hipster twitter, and Japanese ones that are full of lolicon, which twitter bans. They don't federate with each other.

I always thought the idea was very interesting. The lead dev on the project has a pretty impressive github presence. I personally haven't used mastodon but its basically what you get if you took the outsourced authentication of something like Plex and used it for social media. I can see it being great for small communities wanting to keep their shit separate from the volatile sea that is normal social media.
It falls flat when the when compared to its competition when you think about it though, but I still think it's neat.

Is the ungrateful son of gnu social.

I've been lurking the GNU/Social weebsphere and from their perspective the Mastodon guy really looks like a dick.
At least the systems still federate, for now.

This worries me. 'Ethical design choices'? 'Misuse of social media'? Seems like a vague way to say censorship of things they don't like.

Yeah, Mastodon has two user groups: people who left Twitter because Twitter was engaging in ideological censorship, and people who left Twitter because Twitter was not engaging in enough ideological censorship. The situation is mildly hilarious.
