We are making a web browser!
PREVIOUSLY: >>62232913

In the face of recent changes in Firefox and Chrome some anons were asking for a /g/'s perfect web browser, we collected the most wanted here and plan on continuing with the creation.

To contribute follow the WORK PLAN, join the IRC to ask developers for a repo, and get to programming!

why m**nman tho?
>>
>>62265929
The moonman logo is to keep out SJWs and others who would inject their unwanted politics into this. The devs don't care about what your political views are, only that you can contribute to this project.

What is that dark Safari logo browser?
>>
>>62265951
The dark one is webkit nightly and the purple one is safari techonology preview
>>

What can it do?
>>
>>62265993
It's very basic and lacks in features right now, but soon it will be the browser /g/ always wanted.
>>

>it will be the browser /g/ always wanted.

So just a black terminal with green text?
>>
>>62266012
You'll get theme support and images and basic CSS, themes are being worked on right now because CSS is a low priority. I don't know if CSS3 will be implemented, but the essential features will be.

Oh, I'm sorry then, I must have missed the part where you wrote you were in the middle of a technological race with the second largest superpower in the world, that could decide the fate of humanity. Carry on.

Seriously though, even projects with large teams and funding like brave decide to go with preexisting rendering engines. Why do it all over again if it has been done many times, and perfected over the years.
>>
>>62270552
There's actually 2 superpowers.

>perfected
>no room for improvement or competition
yea, ok
>>
>>62270592
>no room for improvement or competition
>implying a bunch of anons are gonna implement a standard better than industry professionals have over the years
I 100% support the effort to make a new browser, because there's many things that could be improved/changed over the leading products, but the rendering engine part? Sorry, but that's just an implemantation of the standard. Even huge organization like mozilla can't make theirs as efficient as blink, and you're telling me you're gonna improve upon something here?

My point is, there is a room for improvement in browsers in general.
And there is NO room for improvement (for small scale project like this) on something as specific and narrowly focused as a rendering engine that's implementing a standard.
>>
>>62270461
>>62270530
Alright, I'll try a fresh compile later. Should I stop using the odilitime repo?
>>
>>62270552
Seriously? Why not just tell artists: "There's already been a Picasso, so don't attempt anything he did, it's already been done to perfection"

Have you ever seen a product with a large development team move as quick as nimble as a small devel team? The meeting alone take most of your week.

We end up with a world with layer on top layer of abstraction because it's "too scary" to learn the layer below it. This technological fear is killing performance and desktops (because mobile doesn't quite have so many layers... yet...). Enjoy running all your electron apps because that's all the current generation knows how to build.
>>
>>62270688
Let me jump in here. Our goal isn't to make a better blink (a consumer facing product). Our goal is to make a better Netrunner (a developer facing product).

No, that's still the official repo, I maintain port for Windows, and my changes go upstream eventually
>>
>>62270734
Yeah, I mean why are we even writing browsers in C/C++? We should be doing it in Assembly. Stop, what am I even talking about. We should just write bytecode. I mean, should we just say "people already came up with programming languages"? Just think how limiting is that.

Why not? Afraid someone will make something better than WebKit or Blink, pajeet?
>>
>>62265906
Why is Firefox in god tier again?
>>
>>62271019
My point is why not? Computer science used to have students build compilers all the time. Now I wouldn't use a non-major compiler in a product release but my point is in the attempt of creation, you gain understanding.

Most coders are going to get a job where it's their job to glue shit together as quickly as possible. They aren't going to learn much about how things work if they're kept from it with abstractions.

You basically suggesting that no one should ever try to make anything hard or that already exists. And I'm telling you that means a world where you use a js framework in your electron app which is essentially a js framework.

>>62271134
opinions are like assholes, learn to ignore.
>>
>>62271168
Okay, fair point, If you want to learn and it's your toy project by all means do what you wish.
I came from the perspective of wanting this project to develop into a full blown, usable browser, because it's pretty cool, which I doubt is gonna happen if you make the engine from scratch.

You see this is the shit that makes you people stick out like a sore thumb. Netrunner isn't something people are trying to sell. It's not a service and it's not a business partner. There is literally zero reasons to give a fuck what other people think because the devs will still work on it because they can see past the trite bullshit that it has nothing to do with the browser and why it's there.

Fuck, I'd say keep it as a logo even after the beta phase. It would keep faggots like you from claiming it's their new hipster browser like what happened to FireCuck.

Use PAM, unfortunately Photoshop and Gimp don't support this as 32bits directly, so you have to convert it.

1. make PNG with alpha transparency (32bit)
2. run them through this site: https://convertio.co/png-pam/

We only accept netpbm (most these subformats don't do alpha, except PAM and P8). I'm in the middle of trying to see if TGA will work.

I saw this in the work plan. How do you intend to achieve this? I would be way more likely to contribute if the codebase weren't in C++. (Not a C++ hater I just don't really feel like learning all of the language's 9000 features.)

I agree. I think anything written by a group of hobbyists should be as close to the hardware as possible, especially if one of the side goals is to learn. My understanding is this thing us supposed to be as barebones and non-shill as possible so why not just use C? Not a critque, genuinely curious.

We're not using all 9k features. We're actively avoiding following a strict OOP paradigm. We've mixed C++ and C code.

We are using smart pointers (std::unique_ptr and std::shared_ptr) to give us some rust like protection. We do plan to use std::thread for threading. I'm very proud we really don't have any custom templates in this project yet.

Despair is a C coder and we're moving parts that don't need to be in C++ into C. The classes are mostly used for a modular/plugin like systems where extending an interface will allow other developers to easily add functionality.

C++ these days is p. damn close to the hardware. But realize our goal is to get it built first and then worry about optimizations later.
>>
>>62286643
Everything on that list is based on or is a fork of Chromium and Netscape, while using Webkit or Gecko.

There is no safe browser besides the text based ones. Hence Netrunner.
>>
>>62265906
So Firefox is excellent tier? I've been using it for awhile but for some reason I have issues loading images nowadays from imgur and other such sites. Like if I pick a wiki or something, and see an image that usually clicking on it leads to a full resolution, it just does nothing and adds some text to the link, or if I open it in a new tab all I see is white. Googling this problem gives me solutions from back when Firefox still had Java so I can't even bother trying them out as I cannot replicate their instructions. Anyone know how to fix this?
>>
>>62271329
Vivaldi isn't that great. At least when I tried it out ast yer. But Brave isn't too bad abd I've been using it for few weeks now. Extensions besides, it runs incredibly quickly (made comparisons with Chrome on browserbench) and runs slightly better and fast than chrome. Although, I know a lot of people will turn it away because the currect lack of extensions, though its not as much of a problem for me

Waterfox is pretty much maintained by one dude. That exacerbates the already pretty big problem of browser forks processing security updates slowly and poorly. Also he's trying to offer long term support of legacy addons, and that's probably not going to end well.

tl;dr: major changes that you can't see

I've been doing a major refactor, throwing out half the code in some files. Means no new features but removes barriers to adding them. Most of the directory structure has been moved around to better reflect our future.

All the OpenGL/glfw code is now container in only 2 classes. Paving the way for older OpenGL support, framebuffer and textual interface.

However OpenGL optimizations did take a step backwards: resizing is super fast but a render (which only happens on load or on resize) is much slower. Though this new structure will allow for texture atlasing.

Doing research on how I want to structure my javascript interpreter for next week's work. Also spent some time today on research for vi-style key bindings and looked into https://reproducible-builds.org/.

A lot of breaking things that used to work. Spending hours finding the change that broke them before fixing and repeating.
